Hello,
I have a 1997 Esprit V8 with 26,000 miles, I am not the original owner. Since I purchased the car a couple of months ago the gear shifts have all been very hard to begin with. The reverse grinds when the engine warms up but works when the car is cold or the engine is turned off. The fifth gear as well has now started to grind when the car gets hot. The car has a steel braided cable, new clutch cables and fork, and the master and slave cylinders have been bled, we also changed the synchros on the transmission. I am new to these cars so now I'm lost. My problem now is the gears are hard, the revere and fifth crunch when warm and the third crunches sometimes when warmed as well but not always. Do I need a new clutch or just the friction discs or does it sound like something else altogether. I really would appreciate some help. Thank you.

You need a new clutch...or a reconditioned clutch (half the price) This is clutch drag and if I sound weary, it's because I have been plagued by this problem for nearly eight years one way or the other. Part of the drawback of using a V8 as daily transport I guess. The only answer is to replace all the bits in the clutch that move. Hope this helps avoid any other "blind alleys". Believe me, I've been up most of them!
