I have just updated my TomTom and guess what, it is now illegal to be warned of speed cameras in France.
It became illegal in Switzerland a few years ago and speed cameras were removed from my TomTom automatically without any warning.

There is an iPhone app "Cams Ahoy" that still worked in Switzerland so it may work in France.

This from TomTom website

Updates are automatically uploaded to your device once you connect your device to MyTomTom. More information can be found here.

It is illegal to receive speed camera alerts in France. This update removes the speed camera alerts for France from your device. We will not send you any more speed camera location updates for France. When available, we will update this service to warn about danger zones in France.

As long as the French continue to play fair with their static cameras - when they put a speed camera sign on the side of the road in my experience you'll meet one in under 1km - that's OK I suppose, I'm not sure if Camera Alert or anything else will warn of regular spots where the French Traffic police set up with mobile cameras.
Normally Aspirated - and lovin' it!

In Victoria, there are simply signs stating that cameras are used, but no indication as to where. They use approaching cameras on bridges, following cameras on over-road signage hidden behind the signs, mobile cameras. The trip I did to NSW recently, there are numerous cameras where there is an approaching camera piggy backed with a following camera. The following camera would be mostly to catch motorcycles (no front plate), but will also get those drivers that speed up once past the approaching camera.
Point to points exist here as well, but no-one seems to know where exactly.

I'm fairly certain that there's no cross border speed camera prosecution agreement in place so speed cameras be damned. :)

Here in the states.....they seem to be more interested in "red light cameras". Set to catch your plate number if any part of your car is still in the intersection when the light turns red. The catch to this system is that they are intended to be "revenue makers". The systems are sold to cities as ways to make money for not only the cities but also for the company that sells, installs and issues the ticket.

The real trick to this (and this has been ducumented by several outside agencies) is that the length of the yellow light (that light between the green and red light) has been shortened by as much as 3 seconds. It's such that if you enter the intersection on green and it turns yellow while you are in the intersection you can barely make it out in time. $150 ticket, half to the installing company and half to the city...............MONEY< MONEY< MONEY

At least at this writing, it's still OK for TOM TOM and Garmin to identify these intersections.

Unfortunately thode days are gone, EU-wide prosecution is in place since fall 2011 for offenses over 75€.

But what has happened is that the camera warnings are beibg replaced by a "danger point" warning, which s still legal. Both TomTom and Navigon offer this, but they are even available for that horrible Alpine (actually only the icon is changed).

Can yellow light times be changed without notification to the masses? I was led to believe over here that the camera is not triggered by the light turning red on its own, but by the light turning red and the sensor pad being triggered by someone drivng into the intersection?

in Maryland and The District of Columbia ( aka Washington DC ) we have both speed cameras and red light camera throughout. It has also become prevalent to begin use of speed cameras in construction zones. They are mobile units with a rather large camera box attached. Our red light cameras are tied into the traffic signal so that the camera knows it is a red light. From there it uses LASER technology to know when you are going thru the intersection on a red. If the vehicle is included with LASER shifters it will disrupt the signal and send back an error. However the expense of LASER shifters is not a justified expense.

Unllike in the UK and other parts of the world here in the US they care nonetheless for who was driving. No points on the driver record they just want the money as Dave stated....

I have a Road Angel Professional that does not pick up continental camera's but is useful in France as an acurate speedometer that reads in KM, do we think it will be ok to still use it?

With all the extra safety kit we need to carry we will soon need vehicles so big they cant go over the speed limit

School Zone cameras and other schemes seem to be the new ploy here where I live in Maryland, they are even putting them on 50 MPH limited access roads where I live (Kenilworth Ave just south of Greenbelt Rd), and appear to be using timing strips in the road instead of cameras. Weird but a cruel trick as the School Zone signage is the smallest I have ever seen and buried in tree leaves on the side of the road. Not up yet but coming right along.

There is a minimum time for the yellow to be on before the red comes on and several cities have been found guilty of setting their lights to have too short a yellow to increase the revenue from these cameras. Happily, when they do get found guilty, the city has to return the money to those wrongly fined.
