Last Sunday I was all ready drive over to join in the M25ring cruise but when I went to start the S3 no familiar tick, tick, tick, despite the fact that all had been well a week ago. Out with the rubber mallet and several bashes later no joy so I shrugged my shoulders and found something else to do.
Investitated the SU fuel pump range this week , talked with their tech team and found that the part number for the "classic" pump (with points) for the S3 is AZX 1308 at £65+vat but there is also an electronic contactless replacement the AZX 1308EN for £10 more, no tick, tick, tick, but also no sticking points. Also the AZX1310EN is the same as the 1308 with banjo bolts thrown in for free, which of course can be removed.
Just been out to the garage to drain the fuel before taking the pump off and maybe look at the points before spending any money, turned the ignition on and the pump was working fine - very odd! As the weather is fine I might just go out for a drive in it now.

With the SU points ones it's more a matter of when will it fail not will it fail, so getting rid of the points is a great idea.

Gee guys, do you think keeping two SU pumps is slightly overboard? After I replaced the original pump when it quit, another S1 owner suggested I clean the points. I did. Kept the first for a backup. Had the car serviced several years ago out of town. The mechanic told me the pump was failing and needed replacement. New pump for only $360 plus install. Told him to install the original which was stowed in the nose of the car. Didn't like the idea but I told him to do it anyway. When i picked up the car, he told me the output pressure was only 2.5 psi. Thought that was the standard pressure for CD 175's. Anyway, still keep the spare in the nose.

Andy,
Sorry for this intrusion into this thread but.... Why does my account have "0 warning points" on it? Don't understand why this would be showing or why it would be there anyway. Don't see it anywhere or anyone else. Thanks.

What a great day for a drive
Hmmm I've got 0 warning points as well and it is displayed along side my first post but Lyn I can't see anything about warning points alongside your post.

Having tried unsuccesfully to replace points in an SU pump I gave up and fitted a Facet Red Top. Works well, and I haven't suffered from fuel starvation since.
I did have to fit a fuel regulator though............
