I'm trying to trace a little more history about the ownership of my S2.
When I bought it there was little in the way of paperwork, mostly just the current MOT and some receipts for very recent work. The owner's handbook does contain some interesting insights into the service schedule for the first few years but other than it's definitely for an S2 I couldn't say for certain it's for mine.
I've got a certificate from Lotus based on it's VIN that tells quite a bit about the origins.
Originally it was gold, and now it's yellow. As I strip back some of the paint (badly done) I can see layers of blue and then the gold.
I'd love to fill in the gaps and find out it's life, how could I go about this?

You need to submit a V888 form (downloadable from the DVLA site), pay them £5 and they will release details of previous keepers if you can show good reason - researching your car's history should qualify. I am doing this now to try to find a keeper at the time of an accident ten years ago so we can establish what happened - that is a little more tricky as I dont (yet) own the car and had to get the owners written permsision for DVLA - though oddly then it only costs £2.50. As you own the car, you should be fine. Of course you mustn't hassle the previous keepers if they dont want to be but I am sure most people would be happy to fil in a few details if you ask nicely.
Be warned though, they are not fast - I submitted my request March 2nd and not a word since - 6 weeks is not uncommon. It will be fascinating to find out though - sort of "Who do you think you are?" for a car.
On the paint - you might be seeing undercoats or barrier layers as well as the principal colours.
The above is how I understand it but from recent experience, I am sure someone else will know more than me about the subject.

Does anybody know how to go about this in the states? I'm trying to exactly the same thing and I'm running into a lot of dead ends.

My brother did the dvla route with his scimitar. A po sent an early 70s photo of it complete with some chap in flares and big hair. Po was rather pleased to hear it was still going.

I must follow that route, sounds great to hear from previous owners.
So far I've found it went from blue to yellow 11th August 1996, now I need to figure out when it went from gold to blue before that.
