Now let me see...(consults records)...1989, it was. Early on a Sunday morning; my Turbo was the only car in sight....I could see for miles from the top of the hill I had just crested, clockwise on the M25 heading for Cambridge. Hadn't had the car long....and the temptation was irresistible. The right boot went to the floor...and I waited to see How Fast It Would Go. At an indicated 155 - no GPS in those days - I gave up and lifted off! I repeat, no other traffic, great visibility, perfect conditions. Excellent!!
A bit later on I was turning off the M25 on to the M11. There was a car in front of me, and I got that feeling that all was not as it seemed...so I hung back to see what was going to happen...and, sure enough, he decided not to go on the M11 heading out of town, but swerved madly across the stripey junction and went right instead of left. As I'd given him enough space, no conflict; but dumb, really dumb.
Passing North Weald Airfield I once again had no traffic in front, so I opened her up again....only to have the rear view mirror full of blue flashing lights from the unmarked Police car that had been behind me as I joined the M11. Difficult to spot such things in a Turbo mirror.......I was content to put my hands up for 105mph, considering the previous half hour's effort. Annoying, though, that the swerving idiot got away with it.....
Such daft chases as this BMW undertook are pointless....you aren't going to escape and they WILL get you....if you are an otherwise law abiding citizen; only the real scrote underclass get away with that sort of thing.

I mostly stick around the limit on motorways as there are far too many cameras on bridges and unmarked cars around. Time to turn up the stereo and cruise or find a nice A road that runs alongside.

Yes, things are different nowadays. On motorways and autoroutes, I set the cruise control for just under the legal limit, using the GPS as the speed indicator as speedometers always indicate 8-10% fast....then just relax and steer the thing. Can't do this with the Lotus, sadly, so it's a lot harder to cruise legally than Viv-the-Volvo....

Some years ago there were people claiming to have circumnavigated the M25 in an hour or less using cars such as the Cosworth Sierra. These claims were always dubious because, to do so, one would have to average 120 mph or so and many cars of the time would run out of fuel before completing a circuit at those speeds.

The video shot from cameras on motorcycles going around the Paris Peripherique was always astonishing...they reckoned they were going so fast that they'd be gone before anyone could react!! Stunning stuff to see...you'd think it was speeded up if it wan't for the speedo.... Of course, they're all dead by now.... I must have a look on Youtube.
