My mechanic (while driving the car into the shop for the brakes) claims the car was grinding into it's gears a few times then all of a sudden it wouldn't go into gear.

He tells me that while pushing down the clutch he notices it still works, but the Stick won't get into any gear..

I did a quick search and couldn't find anything that might help me with the V8's

What is the problem do you guys think?

would it be a bad clutch? he claims it's the linkage.. Could it just be a bad linkage that broke? and the clutch is alright?

The car had a new clutch 11k miles ago and the clutch was flushed in June..

Most probably the linkage has malfunctioned / got loose - check this 1st, if it's all present and accounted for then look at the following

Disconnect the linkage and see if you can change the gear manually by moving the gearchange shaft.
Do this by moving the translator forward and back (3rd and 4th gear) - try and push the car, should see the cam belt move (ie it's in gear and trying to drive the engine)....that'll prove the gearbox and to some extent the clutch.

Now press the clutch in, the car should free wheel which means the clutch is dis-engaging.

ugh also when the clutch is depressed with engine started it makes a nasty noise, you can tell there is something wrong..

The mechanic who drove the car when this happened has claimed he will pay for all or at least some of the damage himself..
I just hope it's not too costly..

The question is what happened? what did happen to the clutch to do such damage? That is the question that deems the answer...

You may never find the answer to that question but like gmendoza said above it was probably related to your other "strange noise" post. More than likely something was on it's way out and it would have failed no matter who was driving it and your tech just happened to be the unlucky one. The only thing to do now is bite the bullet and have it fixed whatever it costs.

Hard to say what it will cost until they get it out and find out what has to be replaced although they may be able to give you a worst case scenario on repair cost.

A good lesson to be learned here though is that when your car starts doing something unusual it is trying to tell you there is a problem and you should address it as soon as possible to minimize damage and expense...

Hopefully it's just a simple clutch job and the flywheel isn't knackered.

I had no idea it was or was not "unusual" I just picked this car up in june from Feffman, so everything was/is new to me with the car..

He had a new clutch in 10k miles ago w/LSD and replaced fluid in june right before I purchased it.. so it doesn't make sense it would go that quickly.. does it?

Just spoke to mechanic he said a rod that connect to the pressure plate is bent.. and that it's about 200-300 dollars and a new clutch it not necessary.. does this sound right?

The only "rod" that connects to the pressure plate on a Esprit V8 with a twin plate clutch is the release fork. These can brake...

From the description of the problem it did sound like a bad release bearing, as Jim Knowles said. If the clutch is fine, and you do only replace the fork and or bearing, I would have someone look at the clutch plates very carefully.

Oh and make sure the new release bearing is lubricated properly.

Yes the mechanic did take it apart.. I was going to look at it today.. I did not check that fluid but when I look at it I will go over all of this.

I was thinking about this. When you are stopped at a light, do have you foot on the clutch or do you keep it in neutral?

i think that last quote sounds about right , check the clutch fluid first ,could be a leeky clutch slave cylinder like mine ?
