Its a long story and too long to go into here, but......

I'm in the middle of repairing / putting back on the road a 52V8 Esprit (as some of you already know)

The gearbox was changed between the accident and it being written off by the insurance company. to a gearbox of no known origin (that I know of anyway)

I was advised to check out the gearbox before driving, it by the previous owner.

Well the gearbox is out (easier to do than the S4s), and the case split into two halves

Well all teeth look ok (ie no chunks missing)

The dog teeth are all there - none missing

The synchro cones mmmm not sure how to check them !!!

Bearings... do I have to split all the shafts down or can you tell be the feel?

On the the crown wheel and pinion...
No teeth are missing

the tapered bearings and races seem shiny in places and duller in others. is this normal?

If I turn the output shaft that is furthest from the crownwheel, it feels like something catching in the sun/planet wheels. Is this normal ? does it disappear when the tapered bearings are pre-loaded

Everything else appears normal (but I am no way an expert in gearboxes!!!)

What else do I need to check

Can anyone answer my questions in the text?

Thanks guys

Glyn

Still on target for completetion 1/3/2007 !! (I hope)
