The demise of the JPS sponsorship resulted in Team Lotus being sponsored by Martini, another famous Motorsport brand. The decision was taken for Team Lotus to return to British Racing Green, 22 years on from the type 49.

The ‘B’ specification has been applied by Studio 27; it was not used by Team Lotus. Principle noticeable developments for 1979 were outboard brakes, one piece magnesium wheels, different rear tyre fairings, different mirrors and different front wing endplates.
