Team Lotus Type 102 Is Back On Track

The 1990 F1 Team Lotus Type 102 (chassis 4) owned by British enthusiast Andrew Morris, has been restored to running condition by Classic Team Lotus. Classic Team Lotus's Lead Mechanic for the project Lewis Cullington has restored the car to 'race ready' condition with the chassis being completely stripped and all parts tested as appropriate. The 3.5l V12 Lamborghini engine was acquired ex Works by Team Lotus before being fitted with up to date Motec engine management prior to extensive dyno testing in the UK.   No, not a new V12 engined car from Hethel but the Lotus Type 102 Formula 1 car was started by Classic Team Lotus for the first time in 21 years today. The Type 102 is an exciting combination of two great marques, Lotus and Lamborghini and interestingly it is the only Lotus ever to run a V12 engine. Designed under the technical direction of Frank Dernie the 102 represents about 150,000 hours of R&D, wind tunnel, continuous engineering and design time from concept to racing car. Rock legends Feeder take a break from their current tour to visit Lotus Cars HQ and Classic Team Lotus in Hethel, Norfolk, UK. Lead singer and guitarist Grant Nicholas and bass player Taka Hirose were treated to a day which any car enthusiast would enjoy starting some time with Gino Rosato, Director of Corporate Operations then an up close and personal look at the latest generation of Lotus cars including the Esprit which they had a chance to sit in and enjoy. Chris Dinnage, in particular, made a massive effort to have 97T/1 ready just in time for it to be airfreighted to the Japanese Grand Prix. After a massive downpour on Saturday the F1 qualifying took place early Sunday morning, just after the scheduled demo laps for Katsu Kubota’s type 97T/1 and 78/4.
