Lotus F1 Team – Spanish GP race report

2012 Spanish Grand Prix - Sunday

Kimi Räikkönen and Romain Grosjean ensured that Lotus F1 Team were the strongest points scoring team in a fast-paced Spanish Grand Prix, finishing in third and fourth position to move the team within 14 points of second place in the Constructors’ Championship. Both cars started on used sets of yellow-marked soft Pirelli P-Zero tyres. Romain changed to a set of used softs on lap 10, then made two further stops for new silver-marked hard tyres on laps 26 and 51. Kimi Räikkönen and Romain Grosjean took to the track for the first practice sessions of the fifth round of the 2012 Formula 1 World Championship at the Circuit de Catalunya today in hot and dry conditions. LRGP blasted from the back of the grid to a points finish as Nick took advantage of his stash of fresh tyres and a polished performance to finish eighth today. • Nick had more fresh tyres than his rivals after missing qualifying yesterday. • Nick started on new hard tyres, taking on fresh sets of softs on laps 21, 36 and 50. • Vitaly started on scrubbed soft tyres, changing to scrubbed softs on laps 11 and 26, then to new prime on lap 41. • Nick set his fastest time, 1:26.958, using soft tyres on lap 61. After a challenging day with Nick’s car catching fire in FP3 because of a crack in the right exhaust, Vitaly qualified in a strong P6. Nick could not take part in qualifying and will start the race from the back of the grid. • Vitaly could have gone faster, but lost time in the second sector. However, he equals his best qualifying result this year. • Nick’s car could not be repaired in time for qualifying but will be ready for tomorrow’s race. Nick and Vitaly got underway at the familiar Circuit de Cataluña today, as free practice began at the Spanish GP. What we learned today: • Both drivers tried Pirelli’s new ‘super hard’ hard compound. It is very hard and quite a bit slower than the soft. • Vitaly’s car was slower without KERS in operation but today’s problem will be rectified by tomorrow. • Based on what we have seen today, it is increasingly competitive again, but Q3 and good points in the race are realistic targets this weekend.
