OBD scanner

Any recommendations for an OBD scanner that works with our cars? Mine is a 1997 Esprit V8. I ask because the check engine light came on, again, and I'm wondering if it's OK to drive it a bit or if I have to get it towed to the shop, again, LOL! When I was trying to get a smog check, a few places couldn't do it because they didn't have this model in their database and I wonder if that's the same with the scanners. Btw, I know where the OBD port is. It's in the trunk, hidden above the battery. The guy that finally did the smog said it took him a while to find it.

Dear All, I have written an OBDII scan tool that also reads all the standard OBDII data as well as the V8 specific data. Lotus Cars Ltd. kindly provided me with the V8 data details. So thanks go to Lotus for supporting us V8 owners (I should stress here that the scan tool is not officially endorsed by Lotus). The software is free to all Esprit V8 owners and as is usual with this sort of software, download, installation and running of the software is at the users own risk. The latest setup zip for the OBDII_EspritV8 software is below. Please see below for instructions on installing the software. Please note that you will need an ELM323 or ELM327 OBDII interface dev…

Hello all! Just joined and looking forward to learning a great deal. I purchased my 98 Esprit in 2015 and was trouble free until October when it would not start. We have determined that the ECU is the culprit and I have been looking for an OEM replacement to no avail so now we are considering conversion to either a Haltech or Megasquirt system. Any experience with these out there? I've seen a few 4 cylinder conversions with success but I've not come across any V8 conversions on the forums that describe any detail with regard to mapping etc. Any help and opinions on this would be greatly appreciated. Cheers! JP

So this one is rather straightforward in guessing there's a different meaning for when this happens but yesterday my fuel light came on and stayed on the entire drive while I had about half a tank. I decided to fill up anyway even though I had recently and then later that day with a full tank it came on and stayed on again... It doesn't come on right away so it's off after a restart but then comes back. Is there a different meaning when the fuel light comes on like this or am I just finding another electrical gremlin to deal with?

One of our Esprit specialists looks to have spotted the gap in the market as far as ECMs are concerned. As we all understand, replacement V8 ECMs are just about non-existent. Mike S in Germany knows someone who can repair them and there might be a few other places around. I hadn't noticed this before but Esprit Engineering down the road from me in Salisbury formalised a repair and replacement offering a year ago (both 4 pot and 8 pot ECMs): The prices are pretty good too, compared to having a completely useless Esprit sat on the drive: As to whether they sub these out to someone like Bluestreak Electronics, ano or they have in-house expertise is a mo…

Hi I wonder if anyone can help me with a project I am working on. Has anyone got the Crankshaft and Camshaft senor signals recorded from a oscilloscope for the V8 Esprit that that could supply me to run an ECU up on a test bench? Thanks Neil

I scanned the airbagsystem with a Tech 1 scanner and got a fault code 21 "Driver Initiator Circuit Resistance High". Status is "Current" and the resistance to drivers airbag is 5.8 Ohm. I cleaned with CRC electronic cleaner the 2 way connector to the passengers inflator module, the 3 way connector to drivers inflator module alongside the steering column and changed both fuses 15 A and 5 A. No result, the code returns immediately ant the resistance is still 5.8 Ohm Does anybody know what causes the fault code 21? Any suggestion to get rid of this code?

Having a bit of a garage clear out and I came across this Lotus EMM Engine Management & Fuel Injection Manual for the V8 @Bibs can this uploaded for forum members to use ? If not its free for any paid up TLF member. Otherwise I will put it on the classifieds for £25.00 (so a good incentive to join TLF as a paid up member ) Dragan

Now that I have a gearbox capable of taking it, what would be the best engine ecm upgrade to give about 450 to 500 bhp without any risk to the engine. I would be looking for accelleration rather than high top end. I did try the search first, honest !

Hi all. I have a check engine light on the dash and need to read the code from it. I have seen the obd tool listed on the forum but unfortunately I don’t own a laptop, only an iPad. Does anyone know of a code reader that will do everything needed whilst owning the car? i have a generic ELM 327 wifi dongle but I can’t even get it to connect. I’m using the obd socket in the boot. ive read through the free tool and even if I got a laptop I’m not sure I could actually figure out how it works

I have a 1999 Lotus Esprit V8, due to some health issues the car sat in storage for about a 1 1/2, it cranks over very good {new battery) the car does not have spark and I cannot hear the fuel pump power up, air pump relay just clicks as well as the oxygen sensor relay both just click continuously, I did find the 5 amp fuse for the ECM in the rear of the car was blown replaced it still nothing, the ECM connector pin 55 power is good, and pin 59 ground is good, communication line pin 72 data link connector has good continuity, we do not have ground trigger from ECM to the fuel pump relay, and the ECM is not turning on a check engine light, we tried to access the ECM by …

Can you please recommend an OBD2 scan tool (probably one that works with iPhone) that allows for reading errors and also viewing extra information (my car only had water temp and fuel gauge) Where does it connect ? In the back next to battery or inside cockpit ? please recommend something that you have tried and it works !! Thanks !!

Engine Check Light ON

After doing a few jobs, (gearbox seals) resolving other issues (minor) taxed the car ready for some miles/smiles in July....or so I thought. Start engine, pump primes, fires up easily and settles after a few seconds jacked up rpm and decays to 900 or so rpm Oil pressure good, fuel, clock gauges all good however Check engine light "ON" No misfire, bad or poor running but in addition .....ABS light going on and off. Solid brake pedal so nothing untoward there ..........out for a drive and no obvious fault. After a few more blinks from the ABS warning fully extinguished but still check light ON. Return back to base - lift deck and disconnect negative ba…

Hi all, long time since I contributed to this site, my 2001 V8 has been grounded since the gearbox broke in 2015. Not got it fixed by Lakeside and looking at putting everything back together. is there now a recognised way of achieving all the Tech 1 tool functionality without actually owning an original Lotus tool? I believe they are like hens teeth... thanks

Dear, I'm having some troubles with my lotus esprit V8 from 2001. Whenever I hit the gas when standing still in Neutral the speedo also goes up and my kilometers also go up even when the car is not moving. So I've done by accident 30.000 km + .... What I've done so far: - check that the speedo has power, so + & - is working even tried directly from the battery - reset the ECU, battery, sensors via the ODB V8 application I found on this forum - removed the alarm system (I have this extended alarm which kills the car if the code is not entered) - removed the the third wire which feeds the speedo Nothing…

Hi All, Since getting my Esprit back on the road I wanted to check out a few things to make sure it was doing everything right. So I have hooked up Peter's excellent OBDII scan software for the V8 and logged a couple of runs. Initially I captured just the Top 5 parameters but on the second shorter run I captured everything. Primarily I wanted to see what sort of boost pressure I was getting in case it wasn't controlling it properly, the car does seem really quick. Max MAP was 166KpaA which would seem to be about right at ~0.7 bar boost. TPS max's out at 82, so I need to check the cable adjustment again, I am pretty sure this was reading 100% when I checked i…

So I recently purchased a Innova 3030h code reader to clear a check engine light. So now that I’ve cleared the CEL and the codes the engine stalls when the AC is turned on. Funny thing is the car is running perfect, rough idle or anything. I mean I don’t know if me or what but it even seems to have more power. My question is could this reader have erased more than just the codes. Is this common. As soon as the AC is turned on (no other time) the engine shuts off. This has never happened before with this car just after I cleared the the CEL and codes.
