Hi - My 1989 Esprit Turbo (non-SE) has always idled rough, with the engine "hunting" between about 875-1050RPM. It doesn't stall but does run rough enough to shake the car. Once it's above idle it seems to run well. The car has 27,200 miles on it, the EBP valve and throttle jack have been removed. I did a Freescan recording this afternoon - cold start, drive to fully warm up, then idle for 3-4 minutes. It wasn't hunting as badly as it has on occasion, but it was noticeable. The .csv file is attached in case any of the experts here has a few minutes to take a look and maybe offer some thoughts on a potential cause. Any help would be very much appreciated. …

Last weekend my 91SE got a new water pump (a bear to change in the car!) and new Ignition Module & Coils (aftermarket using interchange list). Now I'm getting a Check Engine light (Error Code 41, Engine Speed Signal Missing)...but the engine seems to be running fine. I'm confused as I would think the engine would stumble with such an error. I'm confused if the problem is the coils or the module or something else. Questions: 1. Is the car safe to drive home from the garage with this error or will it die on me? 2. Whats the proper way to change the Ignition Module/Coil...I had great difficultly removing the entire module/coils/heatsink assembly (screws are…

I made some additions to Espritmon. It can now also read .CSV file recorded by Freescan so it is no longer necessary to import this data into excell to create graphs. Furthermore, in the ABS screen it plots a time history of the brake action and the pump to aid in diagnosing ABS trouble. Replay from logged files is easier, the filename can be added on the commandline. Sample files for ECM, ABS and SIR are now included. The manual has been updated and if you also happen to own a Lotus Omega or Corvette C4 ZR1 Espritmon can at least communicate with the ECM. Have fun, Erik the link to the archive with the software is: http://tudl0493.home.xs4all.nl/ http://tudl0493.h…

Hi all, I've just connected up my old laptop with my new ALDL to FTDI cable and tried to check the IAC value. Freescan (and Espritmon) can see the RPM, battery voltage & coolant temperature, but not the other values. Am I doing something wrong as I last did this about 5 years ago and my memory is a bit faded.

hello to all users, I have a problem with the ECU of an Esprit 2.0 Turbo (for the Italian market). I should have the electronic control unit checked because there is no fuel in the cylinders. Probably the MOS controlling the injectors are faulty. Can anyone tell me who can control the control unit? Thank you! Marco

Hello, Shorted A to B and after code 12 three times, it then flashed 11.....There doesn't seem to be a code 11 (or 20) or anything less than 13 in the manual. Does this make any sense to anyone? Thanks Alan

Righto... I finally got a chance to plug the car into freescan and run scan but.. I didn't get far. I couldn't get it to connect using the connector under the dash so used the one in the boot. It connected but I only got a few things actually giving readings. heres what worked Status messages window went nuts! constantly running messages down the window with things like ' head recieved from ecu' etc In the freescan window I only got reading for the following: RPM worked, Coolent temp worked Bat voltage worked nothing else gave readings.... TPS, nothing! What does this mean? I was using a cable which came with the car when I bought it. Serial connect…

May be a strange question but I have seen adapter cables from GM OBD1 to OBD2. I have a really comprehensive OBD2 machine and wondered if one of these would allow it to read my S4 or is ALDL to USB and laptop my only option?

Please can I ask all the gifted people on this forum to have a look at the freescan download from my 1991 turbo SE. I am lead to believe that the car may have possibly been chipped by a PO but I have no evidence to prove this within the cars history. The wastegate actuation is a little late and the MAP is at max voltage and the vehicle is running a little lean at high boost. I am a complete novice when it comes to this area of esprit ownership, so all comments are great fully appreciated and thanks in advance. cheers grahame. data number two.csv P.s it all starts to happen around the 2900 count.

Hi, I've just replaced the exhaust & O2 sensor on my S4S. Now when I start the car although it starts ok the idle soon becomes erratic, hunting between 400rpm & 1200rpm. Sometimes it stalls. It will start again ok but within a few seconds will do the same again. It will do this whether cold or even after been stood for 30 mins from hot. Within a couple of minutes it settles down & is ok ? I have re-set the IAC as described in Freescan manual but still the same. With ignition on the IAC is showing as 170, once started this goes up to 240 before eventually settling down to 40. I presume it is the IAC that is causing the problem but what can be done with …

Hi, My Engine light came on briefly the other day followed by a bit of a mis-fire. Stopped the car & checked plug leads & O2 sensor lead etc. Re-started & car ran fine for rest of journey. When I got home I plugged in Freescan which showed Code 13 - O2 sensor circuit. Cleared the code but when I went out for a run last nights again the CEL came on briefly although this time no mis-fire, car was running fine. Just checked with Freescan & now Code 44 - O2 sensor lean showing. Question is, do you think this is likely to be a fault with the actual sensor ? This was replaced last year with pattern one from SJS. Your very knowledgable thoughts would be ap…

Hopefully this is allowed, I apologize if not. I have been on here for a few years, mostly just reading and learning. I thought I would offer my version of a Lotus 4 cylinder ALDL ECU application to anyone interested. For a little background, I own an 89 Esprit Turbo SE, and had a few issues just before the pandemic. Check engine light etc. I found Freescan via this forum. I got my cable from Sanj like many people and was able to resolve my issues. Cars run great, thanks! As we all know Freescan is a bit old and some people had some issues on Windows 10. I was able to find Andy's source code, thanks Andy. The first thing I did was to rebuild the appl for Wi…

Does anyone know what the red dot alongside the brake circuit means below? It goes blue when the brake is on, and is black most of the time when off, but very occassionally I see it go red and don't know what that means or if I should be worried by it. There isn't much information about the ABS page and I've tried to message @eriks4 but I can't, I'm guessing his inbox is full.

Now that my Esprit is running again - albeit not roadworthy - I've noticed that from time to time the car seems unable to hold idle while running in the garage. It doesn't do it all the time, but when it does the car will start and run for maybe a minute before the idle gets lower and lower until it stalls and will continue to do it on repeated restarts. I can leave it a couple of hours/days and then it will be fine again and then next time it may or may not start stalling again. I went out with the laptop and ran Espritmon to see what was going on yesterday and in typical fashion initally the car behaved itself. I left it for a couple of hours and came back again an…

Finally back doing a few motors, and the first Esprit is a tough one! Owner took 2h20 to drive 36 miles to me, saying it won't rev over 3000RPM. I drove it when he arrived and I was lucky to get it to 2000 and had to fight just to get it round the block. Initially thought it might be a collapsed turbo hose, but induction is all fine. ECU shows all sensors functioning within range except IAC at 6(!), and after reset only hitting 25. New RH tank, new injectors, no obvious issues. Fuel pressure at regulator 3 bar. give it a little throttle and fuel pressure drops significantly, engine stalls or labours at around 750RPM and then will not rev at all. FP comes back to 3…

Oh Great, Powerful, Wise, Weapons grade autistic Hive.... Need some help figuring out why my 1990 SE is running so rich. HC's and CO are way too high at idle and worse at 2500. As you will see, the car is trying hard to pull fuel. Won't even pass the two stage idle test. A little background... Car received a reconditioned long block sourced from the boys in Florida after the timing belt lost some teeth. Rotating assembly was fine, but the top end was done. Of course, the pop and drop on the motor turned into a two year process of 'improvements'. I'll give you the short list; some of it was in place before the transplant, and some of it is new…

Hi I am using Free scan, and it is reporting the following error. Before I start trying to work out what the root cause it, I need to know if it is indeed a 26 B error, and if so if that list correct, or should I be looking at 26 A Components for the cause of the error? So basically which one of these 2 lists should I be looking at, as apparently Freescan misreports A/B:- 26A: Radiator Fan Relay Wastegate solenoid Canister Purge Solenoid Check Engine Lights 26B: ROM relay (?) A/C Control Relay Engine Overheat Relay Throttle Jack Solenoid Relay Secondary Injectors Thanks.

I am trying to get a good catalog system going on my Esprit. I am a MAC guy, but I found that I can get the older Surface pro tablets at a pretty cheap price. Has anyone gotten them to work with the scan tools? Thanks

Win 10 laptop with just a single USB ALDL connected to the port defined in the .cfg file works fine with Espritmon. As soon as a USB mouse is connected to another USB port Espritmon COM connection is unsuccessful. Just thought I'd post this in case anyone else suffers the same issue. Remove the mouse so that only the single USB ALDL port connection is active and things work fine.
