Hi everyone I'm new to the forum having bought my first Esprit - an '87 HCITurbo - right at the start of the pandemic. It's a low mileage car, that spent much of its life sitting still in collections - not what Chapman intended IMHO. I've replaced all the obvious belts and hoses and she's running well enough to daily drive in rotation with my Plus 2. Reading the forum, I see the Citroen box is a significant weak point, and as I intend to use the car as much as possible, I wondered if there is any advice on preventing wear and damage to the box? A specific oil or additive? Also are there any warning signs of failure like diff or bearing noises - or do they j…

Constructed a simple tool for measuring pinion height (attached) 🙂 ...Consists of 8 mm (very straight and uniform thickness) rod from scrapped printer + 3D printed piece to hold things in place + standard digital caliber. Good thing is that it measures the distance from the bottom of the bearing cup ...Because as someone discovered before me the mating face between gearbox main housing and clutch housing is actually not (always at least) centered to the CW axis. Procedure: 1) Reset caliber on rod diameter. 2) Mount it in the holder resting on rod. 3) Push caliber pin to pinion top face and do reading.... And of course to get real pinion height …

My reconditioned gearbox have a small oil leak when i drive the car for a longer run. It looks to me the oil comes from the second screw from the top near the right outputshaft gasket, you can see the oil.Can i unscrew this bolt and reseal without having some problems? At first i was thinking it is leaking from the outputshaft gasket itself so i used a transparent gasket maker to find out the leak.I will remove that again. Any advice welcome......Gotti

My 1981 S3 has been converted to an Afla Busso V6 by a previous owner and I'm sorting some problems with the clutch. It had been standing for quite a while and when I tried to drive it around to the workshop, the clutch was stuck. Starting it in gear freed it off, but the bite point was very low. It was initially just about driveable, but started to drag and I was only able to select gears by stopping the engine and then restarting in gear. I managed to not get stranded in the middle of the street. The setup is an Alfa dual mass flywheel and clutch cover (a mix of 164 and 166, or possibly 916 parts) with a Maserati Merak clutch plate. The previous owner found it quit…

Clutch bearing 1 2

Had new clutch/bearing etc, replaced a few years ago but at tickckover the bearing makes a grating noise as it slightly touches the fingers on the pressure plate. If I press the clutch pedal very gently, the noise stops as the bearing is pulled back a tad. Is it possible/safe to put a spring on the slave cylinder to pull the arm back?

Hi Guys, My 1984 Turbo is giving me a serious challenge when trying to select reverse gear. I know reverse is a bit of a pig in these cars to start with but it's got really bad recently. I need to check the oil level in the gearbox but I have a few questions: 1. I assume the correct oil level is when the oil is perfectly level with the drain plug, is that correct? 2. Where do I add oil? 3. If oil level is not causing the reverse selection problem, what else should I look for? Thank you. I have tried reading the Lotus Service Notes but I couldn't find anything about how to top up the transmission fluid.

I'm initiating a Group Buy Initiative List. Please PM me [ MrDangerUS@hotmail.com ], if you are interested It took a while, but finally, my new design has been completed! Comparing to the original Citroen DS Crown Gear and Pinion Shaft (CW+P), new design addresses several critical deficiencies of the old OE parts. It offers: - reversed direction of the spiral - to correct the OE design flaw and apply force to the correct flank of the tooth (see posts 53-60 on LT ) - larger pitch for increased tooth thickness (30% strength increase) - revised, more robust pinion gear tooth design - better final ratio of 1: 4.286 , which improves the top speed in gea…

HI guys, As you know I'm restoring my lotus esprit S2.2. I was planning in the past to send my gearbox "like it is" to Harry Martens for a rebuild.... But...my interest in the mechanical and technical parts of my "babe" is really so strong that I have take the MAD and hard decision to do the job on my own. After a long search i have found a brand new CWP sincros and bearings at incredible prices so, as I need to save money it's now time to dismantle and see what I can do... I have studied the gearbox section on the manual but I'd like to know if there are special tips regarding the rebuilding procedure as I have not any experiences in gearbox job. If I reme…

Hello all, I'd be grateful for any pics showing the path taken alongside the engine from front to back, on S! or S2. I'm undertaking a rework of the ancillary drives and wish to know whether I've left sufficient space for the croassgate cable. Cheers

The original oil seals used on the drive shaft housings are non-standard insofar as the ID does not bear directly on the axle, a side lip bears axially on an 'oil flinger', I suspect as a failsafe design feature to manage potential oil leakage. (as the rear discs are perilously close to the drive shaft housings) The result is preposterously expensive proprietary seals (eg approx £100 for 2 delivered). This seal has an 65mm OD and 8.5mm width (This is a standard theme with these boxes, that are also full of 'unusual' bearings). The dimensions of the shaft, housing & spacer width are 38x65x8.5 Standard metric NBR R23 rotary shaft seals are available in 38x…

Hi there, Quick question regarding the clutch hose routing on an S3 NA, I always understood these ran through the chassis on all esprits, however, when I set about replacing my brittle red hose with braided one, it turned out that my red clutch hose was routed inside a channel on the underside of the body and held up by "bendy clips" it didnt seem especially secure for something so important, so thought I`d better check around whether this is where it`s meant to run? cheers, Mark

New owner here of a '83 Usa Turbo Esprit. PO had a shop service the clutch, I believe it's brand new. When taking off in first gear from park, you have to rev the gas as you release the clutch or the engine may/will stall. I'm curious if that is normal, since I'm used to that being a requirement for a worn clutch; on my Civic, if you slowly release the clutch pedal the car will happily start rolling forward in first gear without the gas engaged.

Curious as to what is possible in exchanging flywheels and/or clutches between 907 and 910 powered cars. I have acquired the bits from an early Turbo, pondering which might serve in the restoration of my upgraded S2. Cheers

I would like to share that I am about to order a new batch of 50 -100 ring and pinion sets for Citroen SM. ( Same as for Lotus Esprit. Much stronger than original. This info is from manufacturer. Hi Harry. We will use FORGED material ,the same we used for lancia delta group A. We will make Hpg-s grinding , wich improves the pattern. Parts will be klingelnberg , it means comparing a gleason bevel gear with same size and module the klingelnberg is 30% stronger. With 50 euro more i can make a coating anti friction. This coating is superfinish .It is to avoid the usury of parts .You have more chance to avoid pitting.Superfinish is not a coating like a print,…

I had previously read in passing that someone had fabricated a hand tool for boring the spigot recess of the crankshaft to accept the Citroen roller bearing. This obviously eliminated the issue of the broken circlip and a damaged crankshaft. Can anyone point me in the right direction of this article and the person with this tool.

I have a 81 S3 on removing gearbox the input shaft came out easily, presume missing circlip, previous owner was driving the car with no clutch / gearbox issues. Is the circlip required? Can it be fitted without a box stripdown ?

🖐️ It`s that time again to change the gear oil in my Esprit S3 and Turbo HC. I have read a couple of older threads of what official oil to use in the Esprit and what type a specialists recommend. Castrol have updated their range within the last year or two and have several to choose from. The most important in my opinion is firstly the words Transaxle and Manual. Maybe I`m reading too much into it but hopefully my mind can be put at rest so I can sleep easy tonight! The same official recommendations used to appear for the Citroen and Renault boxes to use Castrol Manual TAF-X oil. This is SAE75W-90, API GL4/5, VW 501 50 (as written on the bottle I still have). T…

I swapped my master cylinder a few months ago, but due to other tasks, I didn't reconnect the pedal at the time. Tonight I attempted to reconnect the pedal to the linkage, but it seems too short. Even with the pedal at the floor, I couldn't line the hole in the linkage up. There is some adjustment left, but even if I maxed out the adjustment I'd still be really short. I'll admit I tossed the old cylinder a while ago, but I did do a side by side comparison and didn't notice a significant difference. I feel like I'm missing something here. I'm regretting tossing the old unit, because at least I could see if the connecting bits were different. I did try pulling on …
