Some six-plus months ago I posted many superlatives about my V6 Exige; I stand by every word. Each drive was an experience and the few occasions when I could fully exploit it on the road made memories. Even short trips sometimes provided a few seconds when “Wow” was the only thing to say ........ first-time passengers occasionally seemed unable to speak at all. Nevertheless, recently it went to another’s hands; the reason is in the last two sentences - see the word “few”.
I, and I suspect the major of owners, choose a Lotus ahead of the “supposed alternatives” because of the driving experience. Appearance, interior, accessories etc are all very well, and important in their own way, but are just lower down the list. For those who primarily want to “show off a fancy fast car” there are plausibly better alternatives. So, whatever the Lotus, I have to be able to “drive” it. And driving the V6 Exige in my part of the world included far too much time not using its capabilities, much less exploring them. Frustrating and making me well aware of the downside of the Race Pack suspension. (Marvellous as it is for making corners just disappear when the occasion arose.) Had I felt that fairly frequent track sessions could fit into my cost/benefit envelope I would still have it - but sadly..........
Instead, after a break (touched to read the comment or two re my absence - thank you) I am now delighting in an Elise S Club Racer. One of a limited run built originally with both the Comfort Pack and the Bilstein adjustable Sport suspension. Together with the lighter forged wheels, sports intake and sports exhaust it is a great little toy. It is actually rather more vocal than the standard Exige and I think looks the part in Chrome Orange. So yes, it has only 244 PS/Kg instead of the Exige’s 298, and it takes 4.6 seconds to 62 mph instead of the Exige’s 4.0. The suspension is clearly not as firm as the Exige/Race, but in road settings certainly not too soft and, in my opinion, just right for “road but with occasional tracks in mind”. But course it is adjustable. And on the road I can drive it more often rather closer to its capabilities without constantly risking ............ the formalities.
On the track - first session booked - I am sure I still won’t be approaching its full capabilities. (Especially when I have clicked my dampers to the track settings!) And I promise to try not to hold up you Exige V6 lot even when I have!
