  1. Hello Evora people. I’ve upgraded / gone soft (delete as you see fit) from an Exige 350 Sport. As you can see I have no imagination when it comes to colour choice.

  2. Today I helped @peteyg install the calipers onto my S2. Bolting into place was easy, they go straight into the existing sliding pins. Handbrake cables - these go into the top of the caliper rather than the bottom, passenger side was no problem with a bit of manipulation. I was warned the driver side would need shortening but we were concerned about compromising it so elected to reroute. I initially we tried behind the battery box but it was too tight so elected to bring the cable in through the bodywork earlier and run to the caliper that way. There is a fair bit of slack on the cable but looks to be operating ok. Only concern we have is there is a raised ridge on the caliper and it is rubbing on the mounting bracket so don't know how this will affect its operation. I will speak to PNM to get their thoughts. They also suggested new brake pads and for the extra £20 I went with it. Will update more with pics when we test them. Oh and they are a LOT lighter!

  4. As 2019 is the 45th anniversary of the launch of the Lotus Elite, I’m hoping that we can put together an event to mark the occasion. We should also include the Eclat, as it started life as the Elite coupe, so should be allowed to share the birthday, and it is unlikely that another event could be organised for next year. I’ve already been in touch with a few Elite owners who are very supportive of the plan, and who agree about the inclusion of the Eclat. I'll post planning for the event as it develops - the favourite option at the moment is to drive to a venue reasonably close to Hethel; I'm in discussion with Ketteringham Hall at the moment.. The actual announcement date of the Elite has kindly been confirmed by Oliver Winterbottom as Wednesday 15 May 1974. On that date, The Eastern Daily Press reported: “The Lotus Elite, a beautiful four-seater high performance touring car built at Hethel, near Norwich, and announced by Colin Chapman today. Top speed is 128m.p.h. and the luxury interior is the work of Guigaro (sic) of Turin. It costs £5445, or £5857 with air-conditioning and stereo tape deck.” As reported by Graham Robson in “The Third Generation Lotuses,” this was not the Elite’s first ‘official’ appearance in the press. The announcement had originally been planned for week ending 17 March 1974, but at the last minute was pulled due to production issues following disruption due to the 3 day week at the time. However The Sunday Times magazine (not The Sunday Telegraph magazine as quoted by Robson) had already gone to print, meaning that the first Elite advertisement actually appeared on Sunday 17 March 1974, and I am fortunate enough to have found a copy – so here it is:

  5. Box in and car back together. Quick blast up the road - and yep - that box feels lovely. its a bit wet outside - when it breaks traction is wiggles just nicely and gets the power down. I must say I’m impresssed. the gear changes feel very nice and smooth - it’s never felt that nice and it wasn’t bad before. Think that oil @CHANGES put me onto was a fantastic choice. one very happy bunny. Wifes been niggling that I’ve been in the garage again instead of doing stuff round the house. Oh well......

  7. It is indeed. I may be a tad biased but having finally collected the car this afternoon I don't think I've seen a better looking Exige. Big thanks to Hoffman's of Henley specially @Chris Marriott Hofmann's There will be a very small video to follow.

  8. Hi all As per the discussion re changing the meeting to a Thursday: I have contacted the Club Lotus group that meet at BIH and the general consensus is that it would be good if we amalgamate into 1 group. It seems that this group is not just CL members and in fact there are probably more non CL members than members. They would normally meet on 2nd Thursday so for January it is gone. February falls on 14th. As it is valentines day for one month only they have changed it to 21st. I am tied up with work for any remaining evenings in January so I will be joining this group on 21st Feb. From the previous comments I truely hope you all follow me. I understand they organise occasional runs so should be nice evenings with a good crowd all with similar interests. see you there

  11. Beginnings of a new fuel tank (stainless). It will be slightly heavier than the original but I figured it was a safer bet than doing it in aluminium.... If anyone wants one making please send me a PM, it'll be similar quality to Axminster and a fair bit cheaper.... Obviously it will be baffled etc, I'll upload more pics as it develops but I'm happy so far

  12. So they bolt right up to the S2's caliper cradles then. That does it, I'm getting some.

  14. Very very happy with the Braille battery... pound for pound a lithium battery is THE best way to reduce weight. Yes I have a trickle charger that I attach when I know the cars not going to be used for a week or two... I think im two years now and all is good.

  15. Yes maybe think twice about tidying the weld - would be a shame to remove metal risking opening up a possible channel for oil to seep through but I do understand maintaining the standards you've set for your rebuild. It's not that noticeable buried where it is.

  18. Hi Fabian, looking at the length of the weld repair I wonder if the head had been dropped on the stud snapping off that chunk of the carrier face. Considering how tricky these repairs can be I think it looks quite solid. The outside bead looks quite neat really.

  19. Note the tiny green dots on the cam pulleys. These are the timing marks. Uk Turbos have green dot pulleys unless you wish to save the planet then you go blue and loose 10 HP! No Chance! I'm not detuning Mr Bonds ride!

  20. I personaly agree with this vision 😉. I'm just collecting feedbacks on my own as I saw this thread. As my wife works on that kind of topics in the Company, I know it will be taken in account with interest 😋

  21. I think there should not be any additional cost to point out the brand name of a tire. I would never charge my customers more for adding the LEITSPEED wheel center caps for the LEITSPEED Evora forged wheels. And I even pass out a plain center cap carrier of 60 mm diameter for each wheel if somebody wants to put in a Lotus logo instead of Leitspeed. But that is just my thinking 😉

  25. Fabian, please look again at the numbers as I see your findings to be 5 exhaust and 7 inlet out of spec. Your Turbo should have Spec 9 cams I believe. Cheers

  26. I had the glass conversion done on my new Exige 350 Roadster. It improved the rear vision enormously and allowed a view of the engine. No window heating available, but this is not a problem in the Aussie climate. Just ordered a new Exige 410, so I will have to live with the lack of rear vision. Due in March. Can’t wait!

  27. Congratulation with this superb Lotus. I can imagine that you feel very happy with this type of Lotus and I wish you many nice and safe trips with the Esprit. BTW: conform the car front picture it seems to be a Lotus Esprit S model. The (side) sills however are of the successive type SE. Regards, Ruud

  28. Hi Jesse, Oh no, what have you done? French fries with fish, no no no, that's not good, what you need with that fish is a good portion of chunky deep fried English chips and a some mushy peas. Beer looks tasty though. By the way, congratulations, the Esprit looks lovely, you're gonna have some fun with it.

  31. Have check the valve clearances, here they are.from this we can see three are outside limits. The water pump bearing is making a noise on rotation and the some bolts havn't been replaced. I can conclude the F1 guy who allegedly rebuilt this couldn't have one many races! So it has to be a full rebuild with a tolerance check and replacement of any sub standard parts. There is evidence of a weld repair to the cyclendar head. It's at the front on the corner.. All the valves beneath are clean and it looks like it has been reconditioned. Only way to be sure the repair is acceptable is to dismantle it all and have a look. It appears the repair is only on the edge of head casting beneath the cam holder, so it may not cause a problem. It's nearly all in pieces just awaiting magnets for the cam holder removal.

  32. I'm shortly going to be fitting these to @Nelly Neil's S2 so I'll let you know how it goes. If I forget, remind me. I'm told PNM's advice is to shorten the handbrake cables though not sure quite how seeing as the ends are crimped. I'll probably give them a call for the low down. Wish me luck... Pete

  35. If this has been talked about before then sorry but I am seriously angry 😡 about this. I live in South East London, truth be told (thanks Nes) actually Kent and travel with essential work equipment into London at least 10 days a month if we are busy that can be 25 days a month and that &*£”! Khan is now bringing in the Ultra Low Emission Zone. My van is 3 years old in March and I was going to buy it, oh but no, I am not now, as it turns out, that it will cost me £24 a day to drive into inner London for 2 years then in 2021 the Ulez is going to include everything within the North and South Circular. Well the £12.50 as not in the CC zone. That means every car/ van I own is subject to this 24hrs a day 365 days a year, including my wife’s 3 year old BMW! Now I am kinda lucky as the van lease is up in 8 weeks so I am having to buy a new Euro 6 compliant one. We always go to the cinema in Greenwich in 2 years we will never go. We done a straw poll on the motorway on the way back from Hertfordshire today and 80% of them vehicles are buggered. Commercials are £100 a day! This is ludicrous, what 7 years ago we were told to drive diesels now this, so I am going to trade a perfectly good van in the next 8 weeks,my wife’s car is worthless in 2 years and the Loti which must have paid their green credentials 20 years ago and their emissions must be in nothing in the real world are not allowed either. This country only has one way of sorting anything, not by forward thinking, but by tax. This will f&£k so many businesses it is beyond a joke, not mine as I was lucky Dan E/taxed rant not even started to be honest ps. Please don’t give me you shouldn’t live in London crap this is real world stuff that is going to bury a lot of businesses and people

  38. The majority of these polls are pointless. They generally don’t cover a sufficient number of people from a reasonable cross section of individuals across the U.K. Opinion polls that don’t state their sources and the cross section of people interviewed are not opinion polls worth publishing. Then of course you have the questions which are often posed in a way that encourages the individuals to give the required answer.

  39. The copper pipe thing was my attempt at a joke 😁 In other news... Hey presto - it's out! (what a ball ache) For future reference (I know I've searched the Internet to high heaven looking for miracle extractions)... Dropped the offside engine mount and slowly released the engine down on a trolley jack supported by a very large chock to spread the load as much as possible and to try and lower it evenly until eventually there was enough space to get the tank out. I don't think this method would work with the gearbox fitted mind you. Getting the mount back on will be fun. Oh and by the way a genius bit of design I discovered was that the rearmost mount bolt is obscured almost completely by one of the large oil pipes coming off the filter housing so. The only way to get it back in will be to remove that pipe. Which will make a right mess!! I've only just done an oil change so I might put a short bolt in for now and change it when I drop the oil. At least the tank is out!

  40. It's an awkward son of a gun at times I'll give it that! But mostly just a lot of nuts and bolts to undo (whilst praying they don't shear). 😁😁😁 The last car I did any significant work on was a Porsche 928 (1982) which compared to the Esprit is more or less screwed together like a modern car. Some things about the Esprit really make me laugh, like the shoddy expansion tank which looks like it was welded in a high school design and technology class! So, gearbox is now out of the car but the tank still isn't! The good news is now the gearbox is out of the equation I reckon I can remove the rh engine mount and then cant the engine down to take the tank out.... Another bit of good news is that the rear crank seal seems dry so that's being left alone for now. Current to-do list: - New clutch kit - New balance pipe (I'm going for a 22mm piece of plumbing pipe actually, what do you reckon to that for a bodge?!) - Various new fuel, air, water hoses - All new bolts, clips etc replaced for stainless - Powder coating the exhaust bracket/hanger - Refinishing the cam covers - New gear oil - A jolly good clean and degreasing of everything - New expansion tank (£20 from ebay and I'm going to modify it to add a turbo feed and hole for the original low coolant sensor)... Looks worth a punt for the money: Flywheel looks worse than it is on the photo, it's nice and smooth/flat and should clean up fine: Ah yes, my SE wheels are off for a refurb and 4x new tyres tomorrow - Rightly or wrongly I am going for "Tipo 33 Stradale" gold ! (standard carb turbo wheels are for sale if anyone is interested!) Can't wait to get everything screwed back together!!
