  1. As a few of you may know I recently bought a restoration project. I was looking for a project and as a kid I thought the Eclat was cool so I revisited those and couldn't decide whether I liked them or hated them. In the end I decided to give it a miss but the Excel and Elite didn't blow my skirt up and although I like the Elise and 60s Elans I have missed the boat price-wise with those. So that really only left the Esprit and then this Turbo came up which was within my very small budget. It had been sat in a barn for years and needs a total restoration. As you can see it looks very rough but that's because it is very rough and has had a million owners... The other side's no better... But the back... oh no wait, that's also rough... However, the front... is just as bad... So maybe the interior will be its saving grace? No... It's a shame you can't smell it Surely the engine bay will be good... no... The front boot... So why did you buy it then I hear you cry... I told you, it was within my small budget! Are there any positives you ask. Well it has a relatively low mileage... Virtually everything that's missing from the car is in those boxes... Or loose... It has a jack and handle which is a plus (if you're unfortunate enough to get a puncture)... And the owner's manual to tell you where the cigarette lighters are. I love the extra pages glued in it to presumably rectify mistakes... The engine is free and I can turn it over by hand which is a good sign. So what's the plan then? Buggered if I know! This will not under any circumstances become a no expense spared restoration, in fact it's probably going to be the exact opposite an all expense spared one. Rat look Esprit anybody? Don't be expecting a 300 page write up either will you, or you'll be sorely disappointed

  2. Not seen a thread along these lines here. Evora chat has one and I thought I’d add one here as I certainly get as many great reactions to my Exige as I did my Evora. So to kick this off... on the way back from picking up my Exige 430 Type 25 I had to pull over for petrol. As I got out the car I hear somewhere screaming “Where did you come from!?” And I turn to see a petrol station employee running over arms aloft and an expression of absolute delight on his face. He then proceeds to excitedly tell me that he and his colleagues had just been discussing their favourite cars and he’d said his was the Lotus Exige. This rather friendly chap the returned to the kiosk to gather his colleagues and they all came out to pose for photos in front of the car while I filled it up. These are rare cars indeed and such a delight to share the enjoyment of ownership occasionally with other enthusiasts.

  3. Dropped my car off yesterday for some ppf work- as I parked up a chap in an alpine pulled up behind me-‘ I saw you drive past my house, thought it was a new lambo,I like that a lot!’ he’d followed me to stop and chat- how’s the alpine I asked?- load of shit it’s going back tomorrow had nothing but trouble with it🤣

  4. Out for a spin after the AC renewal to full 134A. Windows up, nice and cool, we’ve been spotted by one of the local lotus group members in downtown Singapore. Good shot, brings out the angles of the esprit nicely. Might be one of the last shots in that color, she’s headed for a respray soon.

  5. You raise some great points @duncxand believe what we are both aying is " you don't know what you don't know" and "if you don't know you can't predict with certainty". Apologies if I got that wrong. An observation, not just about BEV's is that we seem to be praying at the altar of technology. In most cases the answer seems to be "yeah but the tech tomorrow will enable this and do that". To me it's simple. If it really is about the environment then we need to consume less and produce less humans to consume. Sorry but it really is that simple. Every generation of humans is bigger than the last. So we have seen population growing constantly. With every generation we develop more technology, that we must have, that consumes more "ingredients", takes more energy to produce, does more environmental damage. And so the cycle of consumption and damage repeats but accelerates. Arguing the toss over a car, regardless of the fuel/propulsion system is a 1st world luxury that usually has the most impact in the 2nd/3rd World. Cars and ICE in general have been demonised. Yet they are a sympton but won't be the cause. The cause is our evolving way of life, our population growth and our consumption. Humans have become a cancer for the planet. We're like the algae that grows on the pond. Our reach slowly spreading across the pond. Removing all oxygen and nutrients as we go, destroying all other life/habitats as we grow. That is the fundamental REAL issue that as a race, a species, we need to address but we are too arrogant, tribal and selfish to acknowledge it, let alone address it. Happy Sunday all. 😂🤣

  7. I can resist no longer. I'd go for an Esprit. Don't believe what people say about them always needing work. I'm a long term owner of two Esprits (30 years and 14 years). Neither have been trouble or misbehaved - OK, I broke down once following a split water pipe but that's it. The new Merc was more unreliable and needed more attention. If you look after an Esprit and service it properly I would ague that it's at least as reliable as an Evora. Then we come on to looks. Subjective of course but in my view the Esprit simply looks stunning. Performance wise there is little in it but the Evora is quicker and faster. However, in the real world driving of average speed cameras and clogged up roads does it really make much difference? Height wise you might have an issue with an Esprit but you won't know until you try one. If you're looking for a weekend car you'll probably want something that makes you feel rather special. Evora's are great but don't discount an Esprit. Either way, as others have said, enjoy the search.

  11. Evora is an analogue car in a digital age. Effectively it is a modern Esprit, with added practicality. Normally aspirated is all you need and it can be argued is the best Evora of the bunch for pure driving pleasure. NA will likely be depreciation-free over say 5 years. Some on here have both Esprit and Evora. Many have said they use Esprit much less once Evora joined the fold. Love Esprit by the way - but it would be a more challenging ownership experience and you really would have to love it. Same goes for any classic car, be it Lotus, Aston, Jaguar, Porsche etc.....The beauty of Evora is you are getting a classic sports car in a modern package. You cannot say that about F-type, DB11, 997, 991 (911) etc Justin

  12. If we want to keep personal transport then EVs of some sort are the future, of that I am an convinced. However, I'm far from convinced about BEVs. At best they are an imperfect (and hopefully benign) stop-gap and at worst they will end up being yet another environmental disaster. I'm 61 now so I'm not sure that I will be around to see the eventual outcome, but 50 years from now I can see them saying "WTF were they thinking ?" However, I have no kids and I will be dead so I'm not going to worry about it too much, if I can get still hold of petrol (and keep my Elise for fun) for the next 20 years I reckon that's me done

  13. @rjwooll you've read far too much into my post which is a non political view but based on my own views based on my own observations. I think if anyone does not believe that the accelerating growth in human population is THE biggest risk this planet faces then quite frankly they are deluded. End of. And that is just my view. I also find your pov re that as we get more wealthy re consume less to be totall rollocks in my very, very humble opinion. But I will admit I am not basing that view on any credible research/data. The wealthier, more prosperous we are the more we consume. As technology advances, we consume more as we do less ourselves and let the tech do it for us. In the 50's few households had white goods. Every decade since then saw new goods being brought into the home until say the late 80s early 90's when things like TVs and computers arrived in multiple numbers in a single household. Then for the past 20 years we had had the home tech explosion with phones, smart phones, tablets, computers, gameboxes whatever. At the same time in 50's most households has no car. Now, most have 2, and it is not uncommon to see households with 3-6! Many even buy cars as toys just fir fun 👍😜 Shall we talk about holidays, air travel and year round availabilty of food items (i.e. non seasonal non local) and the explosion in the global movement of goods and materials to fuel consumption. Nope sorry. Absolutely do not and cannot believe that prosperity delivers in a reduction in consumption. Also yes, technology and advancements are prolonging lifespans which, with a booming birth rate, provides a population double whammy. We humans don't want to face the reality that we are the problem. I'm sorry you find that worrying. As for political groups, global agendas, secret agendas etc I tend to leave that for Bond films. I don't subscribe to any of it. Human population growth will ironically be the cause of our species demise. Hopefully it happens before we leave the planet a barren, infertile and desolate wasteland for every other species. From 1927 to 1960 it took 33 years for the global population to grow from 2-3bn people. 14 years 3-4bn. 13 years 4-5bn. 12 years 5-6bn. 12 years 6-7bn and a potential 11 years 7-8bn. If you want to celebrate that as a "reduction in growth rate" fine by me. Fill your boots. But fill them quick as in 20 years with 10bn people there may not be enough boots to fill. So conspiracy plots and political motivations apart. Honestly tell me we are not the problem! And to keep on topic not even BEVs will save the environmental impact of 10bn people on this planet.

  15. @jep you’re correct but every single day I see The Esprit it makes me smile I think I am 6 years in, I was cutting the hedge today and spent a good deal of that time looking at it. The Amazon delivery driver spent some time explaining how much he loves Lamborghinis 😂

  19. No2 looks like the plate which goes over the electric box on an Se/S4 - can’t say about the earlier cars. It’s missing the boot light switch cut out so maybe the Earlier cars didn’t have that ??

  20. Long end is too long to be an original Lotus part, probably fitted by a P/O. The vinyl covered metal plate may be a DIY attempt at a battery cover.

  22. Now I would love an Evora and will have one, one day, but as @Bazza 907 says an Esprit is iconic, mine has been sitting on the drive in the rain, sun etc for the past 6 months, it is usually in the garage but the Elan has been in there at the moment. I use it as daily in the summer only ever let me down once (clutch slave cylinder) apart from that it has been serviced by GST or Sparkles and never had a problem. The worse thing about it is you can pop down the local shop and end up coming back 2 hours later because everyone wants to talk to you.

  24. Yes agreed. There is a tendency to gloss over potential future problems, just because it suits the zeitgeist. Completely agree. It's a difficult matter to address as most people seem unable to think objectively about a problem. I may think that electric vehicles are our best route forward, but as you so succinctly put it, what we need is less humans. No argument there.

  25. I remember this in some of the original reviews and did wonder if the journalists were struggling to find anything negative to say and this was all they could think of! I find I have to reach slightly more than my other cars but it's never been an issue for me. If you don't want to bodge the car you could always grow your finger nails. Or use these handy "finger extensions", although I think they were originally designed for something else...

  28. My car is still on Goodyear’s all in great shape but so old they will be horrible on the road, mind they hold great pressure and haven’t dropped a pound in the last 5 months. I would definitely be interested in a matching set of alternative tyres, I would really like Goodyear to make them as well 👍🏻 Dave

  29. Quite common on mg/rover parts (eg headlights) - it seems to apply to the plastic body and then the final assembly makes the difference. I would say that the clear applies to the glass/plastic lens so that it must have red bulbs inside? Then I would guess that the red part number means that the fitting looks red all the time - so may be it has clear bulbs/leds inside. The old R200 had a previous version of this part that seems to have replaceable bulbs. I have 2 face lift ZRs that use this part, i thought it looked similar to the one on my evora.!!! This will probably start a rash of sales on ebay

  33. I think most of human kind are starting to realise the impact we are having on the planet and we are starting to develop more technologies that are sustainable. Things will change because they need to change. People will still want things and experiences. It's just a case of making those desires more planet friendly. I just hope we have not gone over the tipping point. I generally have a positive attitude about the future and technology. The dinosaurs and deniers are a worry but they are surely the minority? The number of people on the planet is increasing and at some stage we will reach saturation point. What will happen then? Soylent Green? Best wishes for the future. Greta Soylent Green set in 2022 😱

  34. Same here, 2.5m wide, I get the car very close to the left side, and I can actually get in and out without any protection on the driver side, I mean I should but I never had a problem, also with 2.5m you can still walk next to the car or you know move stuff aside it ... so go for it !

  35. You raise some worrying points. On the plus side for humanity, as prosperity increases we consume less ‘stuff’ than we did before. IN the UK, material goods consumption has reduced compared to 10-20 years ago. This trend holds true across all developed nations. Population increase also slows with increased prosperity and the rate of global population increase is now very small. Also pollution in developed nations is much less of a problem these days as environmental concerns become more important in decision making as prosperity increases. On the negative side, the narrative you relate is being used globally to create a society that is undemocratic and totalitarian in nature. The UN agenda 2030 is a good policy example, and the Great Reset being proposed by the World Economic Forum (ably assisted by the supposedly apolitical Prince Charles) aims to enforce policies that threaten free enterprise, prosperity, the independent nation state and property ownership - amongst others - in the name of sustainability and the environment. This is a nightmare situation. Free enterprise, democracy and prosperity have driven the massive improvements we have seen In poverty eradication, healthcare, longevity and environmental improvement we have seen since the second world war and they want to throw it away? As Aleksander Solzhenitsyn said: ‘to do evil a human being must first of all believe that what he is doing is good.’ He witnessed and was victim of one of the biggest totalitarian massacres of innocent people in the 20th century. I haven’t provided any references but you can easily google anything you want to look into further. Richard

  40. I couldn’t agree more. If one year ago someone had told us that our movements would be so restricted and we would be waiting to hear if the government will be so gracious as to allow us to be together with our families on Christmas Day we’d have said they were mad! Yet here we are, almost considering this to be normal...

  44. Now its well known on this forum that my other half detests the Evora and in my 2-3 yr of ownership we have one major weekend trip and about a half dozen short trips to shops however last Sunday went to B&Q so I had to drive Evora and knew it was going to be uncomfortable journey with all the screams and moans that I was going to get as I drove too noisy and too fast (ie 50mph) on dual carriageway I was shocked to hear her pointing out as we pulled into a Aldi car park that she saw a dad with his young son in pushchair almost fall over with excitement as we drove past them. my partner actually said it was so nice to see the dad and his young son get thrill from seeing the Evora ! Small wonders

  45. So my son Ryan and I had a full Day at snetterton yesterday and I’m glad to report we made it home in one piece!! Managed to get there early and use a spare garage, the weather started off very good but became cloudy as the day went on And Then we had some rain at about 12.30 just before lunch. The car ran perfectly until 12.30, it then decided to go into limp mode whilst Ryan was on track so we hobbled back to the pits to see what the problem was, plugged the obd reader in and it showed two codes a p2135 fault and a p2106 so we deduced that it was probably something to do with the throttle body or maf sensor. We cleared the codes and took the car out again only to get the same problem which subsequently would not clear with the code reader. we decided to remove the intake pipe so we could Inspect the throttle body and plugs were clean and to our surprise we found a lot of dirt around the throttle itself, we borrowed some cleaning fluid and flushed the area and carefully wiped it clean, put the bits back on and thankfully the codes cleared and we ran the remainder of the day with no problems. The car handled Amazingly well in all the corners as I thought it would with very good steering and feel, we managed to get better at finding the limit as the day progressed there was only one close call which was when the back end lost traction and seemed to regain itself with out any panic. The track day was full of high end serious cars and although the car was great it really lacked in power on the track Straights which to be honest we We’re half expecting But it did not even meet those. the cameras did not get any great footage so probably not going to put any up!! All in all we had a fantastic day we also came to the conclusion that the evora n/a is Far more suited to the road than track, probably as we have had other modified track cars over the years.

  48. Before I got my 4 post lift, I was determined to figure out a way to jack it up and to put it on jack stands without the high cost of something like the JackPoint jack stands. Since I had extra wheel dollies, a spare jack saddle and more than one jack, I thought I could combine them. So, I took the wheels off the dolly, drilled and tapped the saddle and mounted the dolly onto the saddle. Cost me $0 and was able get the car up onto four stands easily. (I apparently forgot to take a picture of the car just on the rear jack stand with the jack/wheel dolly set-up removed ) Since I didn't put my car on stands too often, this worked fine me. Took me about an hour to make, was completely reversible, and it saved me several hundred dollars.
