  1. Big news, Image wheels have recast the CX500! A guy in South Africa ordered 40 sets, so image recast them from an original centre. The good news is they can be made in any Lotus PCD. Superior quality to the originals, but look the same. The lips don’t have rolled edges, but I don’t think that is a big concern. Will post some pics when they send me them.

  3. Don't disagree with the macro-economic factors. I am not a simpleton. The increase in share-holder value and wages of the upper percentiles are however demonstrably disproportionate to the rate of increase in average earnings. By significant factors. Interestingly, our reliance on Russian energy sources is far lower than most in Europe. Energy price rises in the rest of Europe certainly make interesting reading when mapped against their dependence on a now restricted supply...Indeed, the UK's problem is more storage than supply. The increase in consumer demand post-covid has been relatively short-lived (in Economic terms) due to the current crisis, and the UK was largely in line with the rest of Europe. The prices of goods and services have increased, but largely at (small) percentages higher than increased costs. That's normal business behaviour - and the increases are usually a hedge against future costs. Profits aren't bad, they're kind of essential. So far, so what? What is "bad" (and I'll grant this is subjective) is the obscene amount of profiteering being made in some sectors. There are plenty of ways to tackle this, and even the most ardent right-of-center should probably concede that announcing record profits by companies in the energy sector during the current cost-crisis is downright wrong. And inflationary. Which is really the root of my post. Not quite sure anyone with any sense would view the current situation as Utopia, regardless of their particular political leanings.

  4. Let’s face it though - I’m a true blue blood and a capitalist. There’s something so very wrong with the Status Quo at the moment. Some of the ceo bonuses and packages are frankly disgusting. I’ve no issues with high remuneration - but the figures we have seen the likes of persimmon dish out are just plain wrong.

  7. We've only got electric. With electric showers there's no need to heat up the full immersion tank each day, so we've resorted to just using the kettle, primarily for washing up. Next on my list is to insulate the kettle to increase it's efficiency.

  10. Thought I should reply to this thread to say thanks to all who shared advice on Esprits. After much soul searching I decided to go for the other Lotus I always wanted to try. So this is my 'official hello' as I put a deposit down on a 350 Sport last week. I've been watching them endlessly over the last year and my irresistible spec came up (there's something about the combo of open shift and the twin back lights on the basic S3 body that does it for me.) It's also the same colour outside and in as my Emira order (going to worry about that later.) This is the car I always wanted (other than an Esprit.) Happy memories of hours spent on Project Gotham Racing made real. I cannot wait, hope to get it later this week and meet up with some of you in the not too distant future. Pav

  12. Hello fine people of TLF. I've finally got round to registering, I'm into the sixties British innovators and their cars (also Italian sports bikes). As of last year finally managed to buy the Lotus I always wanted. It was going to be an Exige but then the Emira was announced.. still not sure I've done the right thing (or when I'll get it but you know all about that, I was July delivery, then August, now October.) Anyway, either way the gap in the pic needs filling with a Lotus. Are Esprits really that bad an idea? My boyhood Bond dream car, until I test drove one 20 years ago and had a bit of a never meet your heroes moment. For me the Emira is the new Esprit but waiting for test drive to see it it's as good (or not) as those that get paid to do such things say.

  13. Ah, now that is a sentiment to warm the cockles of this old-fashioned (centrist) socialists heart. The "don't tax or you risk investment" was at the heart of the trickle-down economic theories as espoused by the right-wing economists in the early 80s. Sadly, we are seeing the benefits of this today - and I am not laying the blame at any one particular party here, although the mantra is certainly more comfortable for those to the right of the political divide. You could, if you extend the logic, argue that the market will make minimal investment to produce super-normal profits. That is what drives share-prices higher, in the short term. For a public company (one listed on a market) to invest today, they must show significant return or shareholders will move their capital elsewhere to enjoy a more profitable return. Whether that is good or bad is a huge conversation, probably best enjoyed over a few pints.

  14. Change that bottom line on the graph from wages to investment and it illustrates perfectly the point in my post from yesterday. IMO need an investigation in to how Ofgen operates since they do appear to be at the whim of the energy companies more than an organisation who are supposed to also be consumer friendly. Additionally the Govts approach to windfall taxes is beyond my comprehension. How will such a tax reduce investment when the extra profits are not linked to investments. Take EDF for instance, they want the Govt to put billions in to their plans to build Sizewell C. This is a company whe are currently making billions in the U.K. but are a French nationalised company who have been instructed by the French Govt to restrict price increases to 4%. So are those excess U.K. profits being utilised to support the French? It certainly appears that way hence why windfall taxes to support the U.K. are needed.

  24. Same here, never use the immersion. Boiler goes on for 30mins in the morning & that is enough to keep the water hot for a full day.
    1 point
  25. That's the same as turning on a kettle in the tank, they're outrageously expensive to run and I've always though for emergency use only. I always heat the water with gas, it's considerably cheaper per kwH.

  26. A bit of online searching (I know the methodology but not the thermal capacity of water and can't be bothered to go to basics myself). If it's a 125l tank and you want to raise the water temperature by 50deC, then it's 8kWh. It may be that you want the water temp to be increased more (if it's starting at 20degC and you want 80degC then it's 9.6kWh. At 30p/unit (kWh) that 8kWh is £2.40 which is a lot of oil, it's 2.5-3l depending on price, which equates to a daily usage equivalent to 1000l of oil a year if it was permanently summer. I don't know about your usage but summer time (with no immersion, we have the boiler kick in and heat water and I doubt we use oil at that rate. So, it looks as though oil boiler is as cheap or cheaper than electric immersion heater for hot water.

  27. I don't see it on Autotrader either? I think if you don't have it on either Pistonheads or Autotrader you're definitely limiting your audience. Just on the forums probably isn't getting the car in front of all potential buyers, just the hardcore Lotus enthusiasts. I made my reserve (just) on Collecting Cars, but I had them calling me trying to get me to lower the reserve in the last days of the auction. I wasn't ok with that unless they were going to pay me the difference! So I did get the bare minimum I wanted for the car in the end but only just. I wouldn't expect to be getting a lot more than the reserve unless you get lucky. I do think I would have gotten a higher price if I had just listed it for sale on Autotrader and been prepared to wait a bit. Like you I'm not sure about how relevant Pistonheads is anymore and almost certainly anyone looking on Pistonheads will have looked on Autotrader too, but I'm not sure the other way around would be true. Lastly, I'd the because of the colour you might need to be prepared to wait for the right buyer? Don't get me wrong I LOVE burnt orange, my 410 is that colour and my previous Exige S2 was burnt orange too... but on the Evora I'm not sure it would be my first choice.... it will be for many, and to the right person they will definitely pay a premium for it too, but you might have to wait a bit for that right person to turn up.

  28. Interestingly, the government sold off our gas storage (what was left of it) and then refused to subsidise the private companies who in turn promptly informed said government that the investment needed was not in the interest of a private company. You couldn't make it up. Still, Centrica did very well out of it at that time driving shareholder value to it's highest ever level. Not linked to their donations at all. No siree. The hard-line of both sides of the political divide like a good crisis. If nothing else it creates a fervent opportunity for polarisation of viewpoints.

  29. Found this on Money Saving Expert. With the proviso it needs to go up 80% in October!! How much electricity are you using? Common household appliances and the average cost in pence for 10 minutes of use. Electric shower: 29p - 44p Immersion heater: 12.5p Kettle: 12.5p Tumble Dryer: 8p - 12.5p Electric fire: 8p - 12.5p Oven: 8p - 9p Hairdryer: 8p Washing machine: 5p - 12.5p Dishwasher: 4.5p - 6p Grill/hob: 4p - 8.5p Iron: 4p - 4.5p Electric drill: 3.7p - 4p Toaster: 3.3p - 6.2p Microwave: 2.5p - 6.2p Vacuum cleaner: 2p - 5p Dehumidifier: 1.2p - 2.8p Plasma TV: 1.2p - 1.8p Towel rail: 1p - 2.2p Fridge-freezer: 0.8p - 1.6p Freezer - 0.6p Heating blanket: 0.5p - 0.8p LCD TV: 0.5p - 0.8p Desktop computer: 0.3p - 0.8p Games console: 0.2p - 0.8p Fridge: 0.3p TV box: 0.1p Laptop: 0.1p Video/DVD/CD: 0.1p Tablet (charge): less than 0.1p Broadband router: less than 0.1p Extractor fan: less than 0.1p Smartphone (charge): less than 0.1p Strangely enough I checked over the weekend and my "Smart meter" is stupid. It doen't have a Cost per minute/hour etc switch. We were one of the first to get a smart meter and it literally has "Your total Cost", "Your total Useage" and "something I don't understand at all! tried every button and there is no "Your current useage per **** is" at all

  30. Run both for an hour independently keeping the rest of your useage as constant as possible and take readings to calculate the cost. Probably best to do when you're home alone so you can avoid the family forgetting and distorting the results. (For a full test you should probably do this a few times to get an average comparison). But I'd hazard a guess that the boiler should be more efficient than the immersion heater. I remember my folks going batshit crazy if I used it without their permission due to the cost, but on the grounds that I haven't lived with them since 1988, there's a good chance the technology has improved.

  31. Back to basics. Connect the tv to the cable (aerial in) going into the splitter - does it work? connect the aerial cable directly to one of the rooms cable - does it work? that’s the best way of eliminating any cable faults and the splitter.

  36. Well, let's hope Lotus take more care over building the Emira than they do over proof reading 😯 I'd have got sacked (chemical/pharma industry) if I had taken so little care about putting something like that in the public domain 😯

  37. Well done for measuring and finding the issue. Parts for this car are becoming an issue. Some of them are now coming from China and the manufacturing tolerances are not up to standard. The issue is most people would not want to pay UK manufacture prices. New old stock original is the way to go. Sadly, these parts seem to be all but gone now. My oil pump measurements were another amazing revelation. Why wouldn’t you make a part the correct thickness?

  40. The mirrors are off, and ready to shed more weights. The oem chunky mirror is 626.1g The GRP GFWilliam carbon mirrors with glass is 182g Calculating in a pair would come down to around 888g (almost 1kg) saved. 😆 The installation was a bit tricky due to the three bolts were deep in the pocket holes. I watched this installation video many times, and my mechanic dropped them in the first try. We found out it is much easier using the magnet stick through the door wiring loom. After taking out the wiring loom cover, the opening is very accessible. It is much much easier to retrieve the lost bolts than how they did it in the video. Looking through the deep pocket holes. These are the bolts when they are in placed. We used the tapes provided by GRP and stuck them between the bolt and the tool, so the bolts won't felt into the door. I did some hand crafting to cut the black vinyl. And the finished product is amazing! Here are some finished pics: I'm loving them a lot, especially comparing to the oem ones which we all knew that they are from some other car. Unfortunately, I cracked one of the glass when installing one of them mirrors at the final step. Thus, if anyone buying the same mirrors, be ware of fitting the glass in the last step as they do crack fairly easy.😭 Frank

  42. I did mine myself years ago, it’s not hard work just time consuming Bauke, I used a sanding disc to cut down the spokes then progressed with wet and dry through the grades finishing with 1500 grit. I sprayed the wheels black then giving them just a final cut to expose the polished looked. The rims are the same process only doing by hand with wet and dry followed by autosol.

  43. My 36th or 37th Lotus, lost count around the 30 mark, could be nearer 40. A gold Elite S2.2, certainly in my top 5 of all Lotuses I have owned. Total restoration an incredible 30 years ago and still in superb condition having covered minimal mileage between many MOTs, all I have done is the usual re-commissioning process to ensure it can be used on a regular basis, which I intend to do in the coming months, just making a list of the shows I can attend, look out for it in the flesh. 44. After over 3 months of waiting, I finally got my car back at the end of May, just in time for a cracking day at Goodwood (having already missed out on a day at Snetterton that I had booked but had to cancel since the car wasn't ready in time). The car was absolutely fantastic and it felt great to finally be back on track, even though I was seriously rusty from lack of driving and very nervous given all the work that had just been completed, especially at a fast track where I had never been before. I have had lots of positive comments on the new look, which I must say that I am incredibly pleased with myself. Pictures included below. What do you think? P.s. You may recognise the (excellent) photographer from this parish...
