  1. Thanks again Gunter. After another longer drive, the self-centering effect of the steering is lacking. Seems to have not enough caster on the front. With the cats and exhaust removed, the rear of the car is about 1" higher than the spec. That will have some, but small, effect on decreasing the front caster. Additional caster will also help with my comment about too much hydraulic assist in the steering. So I'm thinking of getting a pair of Spax adjustable rear shocks. I'd rather not spend the big money on the Lotus Bilstein/Eibach setup on the last V8's.
  2. Appreciate the comments and the video link. Cool video. I know I was kind of nitpicky... For being a streetcar, the transaxle is really quite nice and has great feel. A beefier one would have been heavier, and to me, the compromise works. A Hewland dogbox would be nice but quite expensive. Gunter's idea about changing the pulley sizes is great. I think it best to try a smaller steering wheel first. What size is the Momo wheel in the kit? I can make up a bracket for one on my mill. It seems a wheel about 1" smaller in diameter would be about right. Crazy money for the RAID unit - so no way. How about retro-fitting an older non-hydraulic steering? I drive the racecars with left hand at about 10 O'clock and right hand at about 4 O'clock. The Lotus gearshift is still too high! So... steering wheel and shift lever changes first (the human-machine contact) then re-evaluate the rest before going overboard. Again, appreciate the feedback.
  3. I've made my share of diffusers for racecars, and I had a look underneath my car (V8) for the possibility. There's a lot of stuff forward of the engine that will interfere with trying to accelerate the airflow under the car. Another concern is cooling. You'd probably want to add a couple of airjets somewhere under there to help exhaust the hot engine compartment air underneath the diffuser. You'll also get more downforce with hotter air. Lastly, a diffuser really needs to work in "wing in ground effect". The car sits a lot higher off the ground than racecars, which will considerably decrease the downforce. But I think they look cool on the car.
  4. After repairing a bad turbo, I went around the country roads for the first time today in my new Esprit V8 (1997). Mind you, I've driven all kinds of street sporting cars and formula type racecars over my 35 years of driving, so I can be quite critical. Here goes my assessment: - Engine and transaxle are phenomenal. This has the red ECU, no cats, and 2 Burns stainless race mufflers with no cross-connect. With the flat plane crankshaft, it is exhausted like two four-cylinder engines. Did not get enough speed for 5th gear, but the gears and spacing seem well suited to the engine. - The car feels wonderfully light. - This car has the newer twin-plate clutch, and it is the nicest streetcar clutch I've ever experienced. - Shift lever worked quite well, but I'd like to lower the height of it. Reaching up to grab the shift knob is not natural with the elbow resting on the leather between the seats. Besides, the shift lever throws are too long. Shortening up the lever should do the trick. This is a very nice transaxle. - This car still has the GM airbag steering wheel, and not only is there a visual mismatch with the rest of the interior leather, it does not feel correctly matched with the steering rack and pinion ratio. Either the wheel is too large in diameter or the rack and pinion ratio is too high (or both). Since the front end is so wonderfully light, there is not enough feedback to the wheel. So there is too much power steering assist as well. As a first step, a smaller diameter steering wheel would probably help a lot. - The car was very well balance, but I found the suspension to be a bit on the sloppy side. A slight stiffening of the springs as well as more low speed damping are needed for normal road driving (not track). I tend to prefer more spring and less anti-roll bar in my cars, so I think a bit more spring rate will do the trick. - A US car, the driver's side door-mounted rearview mirror needs moved forward by about 3-4 inches. The forward edge of the driver's side door glass track is right in the middle of the mirror field of view. Not sure how to fix this without leaving a mess. - Braking capability is excellent, but there is way too much power assist. A light car like this should not require power brakes. - Under high power and acceleration rates, I could feel some movement in the rear suspension, especially change in toe. I suspect the bushings should be made of a bit more solid material. - Throttle pedal has too much spring. Overall, I was quite impressed. Some things need improved, but that is to be expected given my tastes and preferences. If any of you have any comments or recommendations, I'd be quite happy to discuss.   5. Thanks for all the welcomes! This is a great site - full of information. Left turbo has too much end play and is almost out for repair. One more nut left. Could not have done this without the torch.

    In these cars at Lime Rock Park, there are only two braking zones: Big Bend and the Lefthander. The Uphill and West Bend are both slight lifts (like "up/down"), and the Downhill is flat out.

  9. Hi - I just purchased a 1997 Mustard Esprit V8 TT - in New England, USA. Quite the car, but it is need of at least a couple turbo rebuilds / replacement. Already has the red chip, so I'll probably do the 25/28 conversion. More interested in throttle response than ultimate HP. I've been building and racing formula cars with the SCCA for about 12 years, so I hope to perhaps help other Lotus members with the usual track requirements, including setup, driving, and instruction. The connection between the pavement and the driver's brain is much more important than straight line speed. You have to step up to the challenge and learn to get the most out of the car. Anyway, my first Lotus - have had many Porsches in the past, mostly the early 911's, and an M3. Time to move on to something new. Thanks, Rob
