  1. Hi guys, I'm in full restoration/respray mode at the moment - quietly beavering away in my workshop. Everything that's coming off the car is off (except the front valance, which has defeated me by one bolt), interior is done and I've started prepping parts for the respray. However both my headlamp pods are shot to pieces. You can see from the photos I've attached. Whilst they were in working order and hidden behind the masks, I don't want to leave them like this. The actual Hella lamps themselves are fine, but the outer & inner rings and mounts need replacing. I can only find the outer rings via SJ (I've emailed to ask), is there an equivalent replacement I could put in instead? I am keen to keep it original where possible but these would be hidden behind the pod masks anyway. Any thoughts?

Blue S3 Turbo Esprit around Windsor

Driving to Legoland yesterday, spotted a blue Esprit S3 Turbo hammering around one of the roundabouts before the Great Park. Brought a smile to my face to hear the distinctive sound once again and certainly not idling!
  3. Hi guys, I'd appreciate your thoughts on keeping the originality of my S2. I absolutely love it to bits, from the smell down to the way it drives and looks it gets. But I don't enjoy the dodgy electrics and fear of the unknown. I'll explain... Whilst I love to tinker and wouldn't dream of swapping the engine or gearbox out, the wiring and reliability of some of the electrical components aren't to my liking. This is probably down to dodgy spades or bad joins but, for example, my headlights aren't guaranteed to lift when you hit the switch. Sometimes they go up and down when they are supposed, sometimes not. The other day they didn't go down until I slammed the driver's door! Anyway, what are people's thoughts on may be upgrading the gauges in the binnacle for modern versions (as close to the original) and may be replacing the speedo cable and oil pressure line for digital replacements. I've got two plans for the S2, one to hire it out for weddings and the other as a track day car (for me) so things like temperature, oil pressure, revs are really really important. I'd love to be able to capture that data too. May be I could be the first to uprate the electrics!

    Fifth Gear

Does anyone watch this now it's on Discovery (HD)? Must admit I enjoy it over Top Gear now, it's got a real drivers edge to it. This week they reviewed eco fuel type devices in what appeared to be very studious surroundings (I wouldn't say scientific). Basically summary was, none of them could save you fuel and if anything they'd make it worse - which I found a bit weird as when they deconstructed one of the devices it was just a LED. How could that possibly lose you 1.5mpg?
  5. Found this this morning and thought it was beautiful, dare I say it sexy!
  6. Hi guys, Did the S2 ever come as standard with a cigarette lighter socket. Unless I've not looked in the right places then I can't find one. The car's been retrimmed before I bought it so it might have been covered. Pretty easy to retrofit I would imagine, just wondered! Thanks, Chris Sorry, I've done a bit of search and gone through old topics and it seems it doesn't have one. Can't delete the topic either so sorry for the repeat!
  7. Hi guys, Reaching out for some help here. Every since my S2 rebuild the headlamp pods haven't worked properly and I don't get up/down/flash. I've had an electrical engineer visit twice and a local garage take a look and they can't diagnose the fault. I've finally got it booked into a specialist but they can't see the car until Thurs 9th Oct at the earliest. Is there anyone local to Reading who'd be happy to take a look, if they know what they are doing? I'm more than happy to pay for their time but this something I need to get sorted asap. I've done just about everything on the car myself (apart from paint) but I just don't have the time to pour over the wiring diagrams, and someone with better knowledge will find the fault quicker. It's probably just an earthing issue. Thanks in advance! Chris

    Headlights - Up/Down/Flash

Thought I'd update this with some positive progress. Yesterday I got the car back from Downton Engineering (Mini specialist, but love a challenge) and the work they've done is amazing. I can't tell you how much it cost but they completely stripped out the front loom, renewed the earth bolts, replaced all the relays, serviced the headlight motors, front fans, thermostat etc. Traced the fault back to a couple of places, including the motor brushes dropping out of one of the motors setting the whole housing live, burnt out stalk, dead and fused relays. Turns out my car has the same wiring as a late S2/S3 federal version, very odd but I can only recommend them highly. Great family run team and would happily solve any electrical problems for another Esprit owner. If you need them, get in touch as they have little need to have a presence online as they're mostly through recommendation and word of mouth. Well chuffed, the wiring has never looked neater - the headlights popping up and down has never been more reliable (if at all) and I know the fans now work properly ever time!

Aaah bugger, indeedy I should have done!

    Top Gear - Argentina

It's possible this has already been discussed but I couldn't find it. Whilst the inevitable controversy over the number plate for Clarkson's Porsche, I was more interested to see James May is driving a red Lotus Esprit...

    Headlights - Up/Down/Flash

Thanks guys, if I had more time I'm sure I'd figure it out but I'm flat out with work at the moment. Technically I've sold the car but need this fixed before it can continue and I'm in a massive catch-22 where I can't find the right person to work on it! Hopefully I'll find a few minutes of the weekend to sanity check everything.

    Headlights - Up/Down/Flash

I've got nothing, I haven't had a huge amount of time to diagnose the fault but there's no movement in the motors at all - although they can be manually turned. I know on the S1 they have quite different setup for the headlamps. I have taken the motors out and checked their internals, both looked almost mint. So it's in the loom somewhere between all four relays and the earth. Perhaps it's the switch, I've replaced the headlights stalk twice now, once due to it burning through and the second the indicator wire snapped! Anyway to cut a long story short, I literally don't have the time to look at it and really would like to pay someone to get it sorted for me!

    Throttle Return Spring

Excellent thanks chaps, mine was attached to the carbs above rather than across and under the airbox. Very strange and hadn't noticed it before but it was sticking partly open after doing 70(+) for 50 odd miles on Sunday. When the new spring arrives I'll get it attached properly!

    Throttle Return Spring

Hi guys, so big drive down to the Lotus Festival yesterday and I had an issue with the throttle sticking open at roughly 50%. On closer inspection from some of the experts onsite at the festival I've not got the right part fitted. So... I've ordered a new correct spring but could anyone show me a diagram/photo of how it's supposed to be fitted to the throttle linkage. Mine wasn't fitted to the airbox as it's supposed to be, so I'm a little in the dark. Would be much appreciated

    Throttle Return Spring

Thanks Neil, I'd really appreciate that. I'm afraid she sold over the weekend at the festival and I've got a couple of bits to do and it's pending a test drive. Other than that, it's no longer mine!

    Only Motors Interview

A few weeks ago, the online TV show Only Motors came down to interview me about my Esprit when I picked it up from the body shop they were also featuring. Here's the result - some nicely cut clips from the 'The Spy Who Loved Me' and something for me to remember the car by
  17. Tickets arrived yesterday thanks Bibs. I'm still getting up to speed - what are the timings on Sunday for arrival (and departure)? Just thinking ahead, might have to buy some spare candles for the headlights if I'm leaving when it's dark

    Esprit in Rimmel Ad!

They saw my white S2 as well, guess it was too Bond for them. Paid for it to be trailered into London and viewed in the same place as the ad!

Ha, yep I emailed when I saw that. Wondered who'd be the first to notice!

    Only Motors Interview

Truly, I'd love to keep it but a new house is calling and we need the funds
  22. So took my S2 out for a quick run today (trust me that's a different story entirely!) and noticed the indicator is staying on regardless of which way it's set. Anyway I took the column apart and to cut a long story it's broken - only bought it last year from SJS. They are £60+VAT+P&P!! It's a Lucas part and I think same as the Eclat - anyone have one kicking around, or know the part number from Lucas so I can buy it without the markup. Ideally asap as I really wanted to take it for a MOT next week for reasons I'll explain in another post after next week! Cheers, Chris

[Ebay-bot] Lotus Esprit S2 in Monaco White (1979)

Yep it's mine. As I said in the ad it's safe to say the speedo isn't original and it hasn't done 11,000 miles but that's what it reads. I wouldn't go as far as add another 0 but I don't know the exact answer. I have spent thousands on it in the last two+ years and sadly I've run out of funds to continue looking after it. The chassis weld was the final straw and although I've had two quotes for £500 it's more than I can afford right now. It was up for 10k but I was getting stupid offers below that so have bumped it up more. It's had so much done to it that once the chassis is sorted it'll be a lovely sorted example.
  24. Spotted a brave Esprit driver last night as I was heading back from Dorset on the A303. The headlights sure looked brighter than mine anyway, hope you got back safe
  25. Although no longer technically a Lotus, it looks like one. Sounds cracking too, and officially the fastest supercar out there (up to 300kph).
