Exhaust leaks at manifold and downpipe joint
7veloce replied to 7veloce's topic in Induction/Turbo/Manifold/Exhaust
Replaced the SU fuel pump with a new one. Got thru the Colorado clean air emissions test without any issues. Now, I have a Collector's Plate and only need emissions test every five years. That is great news. -
Lotus Esprit S1 - Mirrors - 3D Printing
7veloce replied to markjonesx's topic in Esprit 'Project & Restoration' Room
I just want to let you all know that Caterham Super 7 uses the same S1 mirrors on the side curtains. The same company, same style, but in black color. I have a set on my S1 and they look great. -
Exhaust leaks at manifold and downpipe joint
7veloce replied to 7veloce's topic in Induction/Turbo/Manifold/Exhaust
It worked by cutting off the pipes above the flange, leveled the flange, and bolted back up. Now, my SU AZX 1307 fuel pump is leaking under the front part of the body . I am not sure what is going on. Took it out this afternoon and will take a look tomorrow. Any suggestions are welcom. -
The SJ's stainless downpipe does not protrude through the flange. In fact, all the one they sell do not. As far as I know most of cars have flat flanges. My flange is warped due to high temp and will be re-surfaced this week. The only way to do this is to cut off the pipes above the flange. I am going to put it back on without the pipes first. Let's see...

Exhaust leaks at manifold and downpipe joint
7veloce replied to 7veloce's topic in Induction/Turbo/Manifold/Exhaust
I finally got around doing the downpipe and took it in to the machine shop last week. It looks like I have to cut the pipes that above the flange in order to machine the surface flat. Do I need to weld them back on afterward? I noticed SJ sports cars UK's downpipe for S1 has just a flat flange with out any short pipes. Any suggestions? -
Exhaust leaks at manifold and downpipe joint

Permatex® Ultra Copper® Maximum Temperature RTV Silicone Gasket Maker did not hold up. It leaks again. I will have to machine top side of the flange to fix it. Tom/Colorado -
Exhaust leaks at manifold and downpipe joint
7veloce replied to 7veloce's topic in Induction/Turbo/Manifold/Exhaust
Greetings from Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. I installed the down pipe gasket with Permatex® Ultra Copper® Maximum Temperature RTV Silicone Gasket Maker before I came here. Well, It worked. The trick is to put the sealer on both sides of the gasket and let it dry for 24 hours before installing. -
I have about the same reading as you have 8/10 when cold. When the engine is hot on a hot day (over 90 F), it will drop to 1/2 when driving and close to red mark when it is idle. Tom

Exhaust leaks at manifold and downpipe joint

Yes, I fully agree with you. However, I am going to give a try with the hi-temp Ultra Copper sealer in the morning and see how it work. I will add a short flexible pipe to deal with the movement issues when I take out the down pipe to fix the flange. Tom -

Exhaust leaks at manifold and downpipe joint
7veloce replied to 7veloce's topic in Induction/Turbo/Manifold/Exhaust
The master tech person in my local muffler shop told me this morning to use Permatex® Ultra Copper® Maximum Temperature RTV Silicone Gasket Maker. Put the silicone on both side of the gasket and let it dry for 24 hours before putting the gasket on the down pipe. He told me the Ultra Copper works for him everytime. Well, I got one from AutoZone will try it after I return from my trip on August 9, if not before. Will update on my results. -
Exhaust leaks at manifold and downpipe joint
7veloce replied to 7veloce's topic in Induction/Turbo/Manifold/Exhaust
John, The down pipe flange is warped as far as I can tell. Tom -
I have replaced the gasket but it still leaks at the front (two bolts side) and left side. The flange looks a bit warped. Is there a way to fix this problem without replacing the flange by using a hig-temp sealant? Any recommendation on sealant/paste? By the way, this is a stock fed exhaust system with cat. Tom/Coloado

Wolfrace S1 Wheels/Rims
7veloce replied to Chris Southam's topic in Suspension/Brakes/Wheels/Hubs/Steering/Geo
Looking for two SS inserts for the S1 Wolfrace wheel lugnut holes. Do you know where I can get them? Please advise. -
My S1 came with a box fan next to the battery with a black hose connects to the engine cover thru an inlet on the right side. My shop manual indicated the fan is wired to an air temp sensor on top of the air box but I am not sure what it looks like. Does anyone have a pic of the sensor you can share? I want to make sure my cooling fan is working correctly.

I just replaced my engine cover seal last week with 1991 BMW 318 i trunk lid seal. The OEM part number is 51 71 1 884 149/51711884149. I got one from Car Parts Discount on eBay for $40 including shipping. The length is about right, only 1" too long. So you will have to cut it from the female end of the seal. Note, you need to start putting on the seal from the middle front part (timming belt side) of the cover with the male side and go all the way around, cut off what you dont need and join the ends for a perfect fit.

They are the same as ones used on the doors of Caterham Super 7 cars, except the color is black.

S1 Esprit Door Mirrors, Federal USA
7veloce replied to p1renn's topic in Interior/Exterior/Lights/Glass/Alarms/ICE/HVAC
I looked in my Caterham Super 7 spare parts box today and found a pair Raydyot mirrors just look like the ones on S1 but in black color. Otherwise, they are exactly the same. So you cannot find the original ones. This will be a good alternative. These black ones are standard equipment for the Caterham cars. Check http://usa7s.net and you may find a pair for a resonable price. Tom -
Lotus Esprit S1 Tyres
7veloce replied to markjonesx's topic in Suspension/Brakes/Wheels/Hubs/Steering/Geo
General Altimax RT (195/65/14 and 205/70/14) tires work great on S1. Steering feels light and quick. Note, these are touring tires, not high performance ones. -

7veloce replied to 7veloce's topic in Misc including parts cross references
Got the Baldwin PA 3412 for $19.07 and it is the correct air filter for the air pump. The filter is in white color, not orange as the the orignal, but it works. -
