  1. I know what you mean but I tend to find it funny tbh There are enough quality posts to find this site a great resource for info. Very worth while being around !
  2. Thanks lads, for the input - its all as valuable as gold IMO. re: "if you are not fully committed to the car, either financially or emotionally, you should move it on" When I made the financial commitment back in March @SW I was as eager as hell to see some use out of it this summer -- and that was the timescale. So we started to go that way. The car made it to the ramp. Start with the 'main event' finishing with ticking off the MOT advisories as money permitted. Then along came COVID and completely f****d it up. In the meantime events out of SW's control (as I say - not his fault) has compounded the Covid thing so part of the problem is frustration that because of all this there's no progression to think of - you know, like a sort of running commentary of findings after that decision back in March so I can be in a place to say - from 'whoah, really?, lets sell it' to 'is that all? lets fix that and spin her up'. I realise the former requires some commitment and outlay regarding taking things apart but that was factored in - it was worth it. Of course this hasn't happened. As far as emotional attachment - I adore the thing and whenever I rarely see one my heart sinks that I'm not driving mine. My current mindset is that if I sold it at a - lets face it - silly price and then I see another one on the road I'd have the same feeling but with 'I used to have one' in my mind too. Plenty of recommendations to think of, names to remember, and the various views of what actually to do. Also - if there's a turn-around at SW then what happened before March could be re-launched so to speak. Thanks all!
  3. Posted elsewhere : When I had it last it would work but if you floored it , it would turn into a tractor just as the boost came in. Drive with a gentle foot and it was ok However the coolant needed constant topping up and when the temp dial got into the hot zone the fans would come on sometimes but not always. That always used to frighten me - why did the fans come on every so often and not in time with the dial? The t/stat sensor had been replaced for the fan switch. So I drove it home from SW and it stopped. SW came out and withdrew the soapy water from the spark plug channels left there after the car was washed! I managed to drive it back to his garage. After that SW could start the car but it "wasn't well at all". Its been so long I cant bloody remember the whole story but thats most of it. ---- re - being happy with the car - I had an S4S previously and loved it to bits. It was fantastic. The reason why I've see-sawed regarding fix/sell is that I just couldn't make my mind up. Then I saw old pictures and other pic like your car and I have extremely fond memories. I went down the road of wondering if I could buy another after cutting my losses with this one - and even flirted with getting a sapph cossy at one point(!) then I realised that spending the money on a replacement could go to repairing this one so thats where I've landed for a while. Then today I've been told my jobs's at risk - so I dont fancy a peek at the next chapter FFS

  5. So far its been diagnosed as having coolant in one of the pots. I've been told its either a H gasket or a split cylinder. I will want a new clutch as part of the work as the current one slips during boost
  6. Re - Snows. It was Ken who sold it to me. An example of how I was treated. I told them that the CEL had to be fixed (it was lit during the test drive). Months later when I grappled behind the dashboard I found that they used a black sticky substance to stick the light bulb to a section away from the CEL 'window'. I dont know how they've achieved dealership status. I bought it without a service history. I was on another planet at the time (a different story). I should not have bought it but it was the exact same model (colour etc) as an S4S I had some years earlier which was perfect. As per the initial post - I dont want to sell it - I want it fixed - so thank you for your suggestions re: the 2 places you mention Its been off the road for about 2 years. I took it to SW - then got it back - but it broke down on the way home. So it went back, To be honest I tend to forget the timing of this sorry story
  7. It's complicated, personal and involves a family incident
  8. How many times have I posted? Is it real noise I'm making? As to the second Q I'll send you a message
  9. Thanks to the positive responses who can actually read - LOL Just to repeat what I said "Can someone recommend someone/ a garage in the south east to fix my Esprit so I can start enjoying it again, please?". It's quite funny here - I'm a member of several car forums (eg mini, stag) and only this one is hostile to people asking quite a simple question just asking for advice which gets totally misread 🙂. I get it! I'm not as clever technically! LOL Thanks - Gibbie - thats very handy I'll check it out Chillidog - you owe me an entire pub 😄 Seriously though - I won't shock you with the things they did. And they're a dealer. Just wow.
  10. Hello all, It's been a while (again) but I'm after some advice Can someone recommend someone/ a garage in the south east to fix my Esprit so I can start enjoying it again, please? It's with Steve Williams (Maidenhead) for the moment but for various reasons he won't be able to commit to it for the foreseeable. It's not his fault. It's got various issues the main one being coolant getting into the engine. The clutch slips too and the CEL is an issue but the former is the real problem. It looks like a head gasket or cracked liner. Preferably it would be good to have someone near the bucks/berks/west london area but with a trailer I guess that matters less. Any advice would be EXTREMELY valuable. And the moral of the whole story is - never buy a Lotus from a certain dealer in Southampton!
  11. In the case of MY wife she'd probably be happy! However I thought I'd see what reaction there may be to start with. Got a couple of PM so far so there is /some/ interest there!
  12. Just testing but... anyone out there wanting to buy a blue esprit S4s? i have one with <80k on the clock but has got a possible head gasket issue thought I’d see if there’s interest before posting more
  13. I'm what's called an Oracle DBA - diagnose some poor performance issues on one of our financial databases!! :-) I jest, of course, but I guess what I'm saying is ... Oil change? Yep.... Spark plugs? Can do..... Stupid indicator bulb slipped out of the front left indicator - PITA but did it with much blood spillage. I wish I could do it but it's over to the professionals - which I'm thinking was your meaning anyway (i.e. lesser man hours). I think I may be sorted re: the bits. Will find out tomorrow. I shan't go into the other issue yet - well maybe - nutshell time - car runs good at low speeds - car runs good when gradually winding the revs up to the 7k mark - but put your fut down for max turbo and at around 4~5k revs turns into a tractor (both the sound and the performance). First things first. And thanks for letting me know that it's not an engine-out thing - or equivalent. Do you want to buy a 1 year old Civic GT type -R ? No? Well I thought I'd ask.... :-)
  14. I've sjsportscars and pnm engineering and there *seems* to be availability - seems to be a costly state of affairs (e.g.. the springs costing more than the dampers)
  15. Hi. My S4s failed it's MOT yesterday - I had given it over to SW Lotus to get an MOT plus fix issues that may come up. Failed on the rear shocks I thought that shocks would be like tyres - i.e. one size that would fit a variety of cars but alas no. So it's my job to go and find some shocks / springs / bolts etc relating to the rear shocks. Does anyone have any recommendations regarding trying to source these? I'm about to do a big search but I thought I'd put this question here up front because sometimes you find that one post to this forum and someone somewhere is kind enough to point right to the answer. So - it's a 1996 S4s and SW told me that shocks from the S4 and later do the trick. Thanks in advance for anyone who has a good answer! Off to google land now......
  16. good answers. thanks. Comment: "I can't see what the problem is. The driver's seat has plenty of adjustment on it." Every time you bring the visor down it moves the rear view mirror - which then needs pushing back. About the original screws. Yep - they are like they're welded in place. I've bought one of those kits where you can get rounded / seized scores out. I'll give it a go
  17. /some time back my centre mirror decided to break off. i cant remember how it got broken but that's how it it. I bought a mirror that fits nicely (vauxhall caliber, held by mirror stick strips ) in place and hides a DVR camera - very neat. Two problems came up which i thought I could get used to. It's been years and it sort of pisses e off a bit! FIRST: To adjust the mirror you have to move it around because the width of the mirror is too wide SECOND: (and I hate this) The rear view vibrates with the hum of the mirror - great if you've got double visions My question is - Has anyone replaced their review mirror which fits well.? Obviously there's "fit the original" -however I believe they're rare so Has anyone fitted a non Lotus mirror and does it look the biz?
  18. Thats very kind off you but I've got the rubberised one now. If it looks crap then I may well be back!!! Obviously someone else could get in there to buy yours first, but thats my problem if happens it happens. [thinks: should have come here before ordering it] Again, thanks very much for picking up on this
  19. It would be nice if they had quoted prices - they look like a fantastic company
  20. Thanks Jacques - I may well take heed of your advice thanks again
  21. i received delivery of a 'rhino lip - via international mail from the USA this week. It looks like quality There's a load of literature with it and pictures of Lotus cars where they claim to have faithfully built a very comparable copy. Time will tell re:how good it looks - I'll be giving it to better hands than myself. They even enclosed a brand new whole punch still in its package maybe i should have a go at fitting it- does anyone have any horror stories?
  22. Hey - that'll be good. Consider me a possible customer if you do decide to sell copies. I suspect the postage might be as much as the item though! Why is it that no-one has come u with that idea here in the UK ? (I'm making a massive assumption, there)
