  1. I have a copy of the first popular classics in my attic… probably has the same price guide ! , and it has the advert for my very first lotus
  2. I had an alpine A110. it was mostly in auto… but when I needed it , you could thrash through mountain passes using the DCT, I always felt that it was ahead of lotus… it was a sublime drive, with probably the most comfortable seats in any car, but the body is made of wet paper, every time I parked it, it had a ding, passing dogs would scratch it, I got fed up of constantly taking it for paint correction and repairs to ppf. don’t have the alpine anymore, still have my esprit first visit to paint correction tomorrow after 20 years….

    Esprit s3 IOW

Lovely white s3 parked on the green in St Helen’s
  4. Re: why would his new 911 turbo be better than his previous turbo. I have to say that despite having driven every model of Porsche, they never worked for me, ergonomics, look, drive, none of it worked, ever. until I drove a 911 sport classic… and for the first time I got out and said, that is why people like these ! It was night and day better than any other Porsche. Sometimes there is a lineage of cars, where one just hits your sweet spot better than any other. There is only one Ferrari for me; 330gtc the rest are bleh and definitely not a Testarossa or an F40 both of which felt noisy and harsh to me.

    Engine swap

I started a topic on an dead esprit for this kind of conversion, but be prepared to throw at least 30 k at this project… it is not a cheap alternative, you could get yourself an interior, engine and box and do some paintwork and get that sad esprit back and running for less

    Engine swap

Mx5 engine and box into an excel; probably into an esprit; no the gearbox is entirely wrong i put an mr2 engine into an elan 5 years ago, engine swaps are not easy or a cheap way to do things, that said, it came in cheaper than a replacement twincam lotus engine !
  7. For the first time my immobiliser was triggered on the ferry, but I didn’t have my bullet with me, so I had the misfortune of having to be towed off the ferry. I did some internet searching and found nothing so I thought I would post here how I got going again after my immobiliser activated: Disconnect battery, waited 5 mins. reconnect battery, I have power to everything but engine still immobilised, so then I removed the fob battery and waited 5 mins. when I reinserted the battery I got a solid red light on the fob for about 20 a seconds then the indicators flashed and my central locking started working … car started ! sounds like I re-synched my fob but it got around the problem. Results may vary
  8. I am looking for an esprit wind deflector so eBay decided to send me a link to this poorly partly stripped esprit; given it is salvage and has been flooded, the engine abandoned in the bay is probably toast… as is the interior… but it could be a candidate for an EV conversion ? Saddle batteries in the tank space an another in the nose, with a motor and drive from the ev conversion companies.. custom digital dash and new interior… late model rear light conversion (as there aren’t any!) it would be quite a project…
  9. Just bought a new one after asking all the service record people if they had mine !
  10. I have, for a fleeting moment, been in my esprit and thought; the performance and exterior styling holds its own, what this needs is a modern sleek interior, door panels and dash wholesale replacement…… then my mind drifted to what is actually modern ? A completely plain interior with a single integrated lcd ?? It would look up to date ! Or something more organic, and then we drift into TVR cerebra arena and they are… eclectic so after many a road trip I came to realise that actually the charm of the esprit interior is that it is a period interior, like flip alarm clocks, or a knoll tulip chair, some things have a purity of design that cannot be surpassed, like the Esprit, the Jaguar e type, Ferrari 246 Dino. The real value is in how they look and feel in period context, there is no modern equivalent to the warm glow of incandescent bulbs in a veglia dial. When I hanker after a modern dashboard, I think I would buy a Bentley continental.. that spinny centre dash is nice, it will cost the same as a custom interior for the esprit! hmmm, whole other topic, but what is going to happen to all the old w12 Bentleys when petroleum is £30 a litre? Can you pull out the w12 and squeeze a Battery pack and motor in there…probably weighs the same !
  11. Having painted three Elan's ,I recommend you go back to the original gelcoat, do your repairs, get all your gaps perfect, then apply an epoxy resin which gives you a new gelcoat (I do this by hand using a kidney squeegee to smooth the surface). Once that is hard you can sand to the shapes and surface you want, I usually use 300 grit as last sand, but I used to use 600, which is slower. Then you can go straight to a high build 2k filler primer such as mipa applied with a 2mm tip. Then spend months dry sanding and preparing that layer to perfection up to 1500 grit, and then apply your colour using a 1.3 mm tip HVLP gun. Sand to at least 2000 grit. Then your clear coat about a week later using the same 1.3mm tip. If you get all your paint from a paint shop that mixes to order you will get a fully compatible system.
  12. Porsche Cayman in the UK decided that on a long sweeping left motorway merge (M25 to M40) that he took exception to me passing him, so he sped up got himself into a mess and ended up on the hardshoulder throwing up dust as he realised his performance car was a VW beetle in disguise.

    Emira lite

I love the Emira, I will get an i4 and make it lite ! Before they stuff it full of batteries and then it doesn't matter anymore.

    Emira lite

I agree with @iwantone, the emira interior is great, and bibs is right, it probably controls all the trickery... But I bet it has some useless graphic of the gearbox or trackattack timers and gforce mode all of which are pointless. No touch panel covered in fingerprints, no speakers, no outdated GPS mapping, rip it out and put in a knob for heating and air. Take out the electric seats too...Save 50kgs...

    Emira lite

As many of you are more informed than me, will there ever be a GT3esque "lite" Emira, specifically an Emira without a tablet stuck to the dashboard like a 1980s cellphone. I hated it in my alpine, and desperately hope there will be a headless version of the Emira..
  16. Agree with @ICW Earth across UJ. I also have another earth between the column bracket to the bulkhead that goes to the chassis bolt behind the dashboard. I think I put that one in as you can't have enough good earth's on an Elan !
  17. On hindsight (at the time it seemed ok) I have done some bold work on cars.. but even that I would have avoided, that is some proper no way back dedication
  18. S2 body (white) S300 chassis Lexus LFA v10 Porsche G50 gearbox Late binnacle momo steering wheel interior with 2019 alpine a110 buckets with the cross stitching and alpine branding removed (most comfortable seats ever)
  19. I have used: On the market Anglia car auctions Coys On the market were a bit vague and didn't sell my car. It did end up with the highest bidder oddly enough, when I sold it through a dealer. Anglia are a bit "cash deal mate" and whenever I have been there the stock seems a bit tired but priced accordingly, some good deals can be had there. Never ever ever ever using Coys again.
  20. Possibly, I will call them, I didn't follow up on them as they are sport 300 brackets
  21. Hi, I have a GT3 with the V8 "comfort" seats. I have come across one bare bucket and can make it a pair.. I have a trimmer lined up to trim them, and I can paint them... but I am missing the brackets. I am hoping someone can send me dimensions for the brackets so I can get them made. Thanks in advance.
  22. Three key things to look for: Full documented service history with no/few gaps... These cars need regular, annual care without skimping. Large pile of receipts for the things that need doing like bushes, springs, brakes, Aircon leaks, fan replacements, clutch hoses, clutches, oil radiators and hoses etc.. as this demonstrates taking care of the things when they come up rather than when they break something else... Frequent use, this is the key for me; 104k miles and never fails me...
  23. Car cover makes it worse, but I have no choice Foxes chew on my aerial when it is uncovered !
  24. If you're using a folded chassis your engine will be slightly higher than mine, I am using a Spyder chassis which has an additional cross brace behind the gear lever location which fouls the T50 gearbox lever relocation mechanism. That cross brace is not present on a real chassis. I wanted to ensure that the engine and box were perfectly level in the chassis , the only way to achieve that was to clear the brace by lowering the engine slightly. The clearance engine to column is fine, the clearance could be an issue with the alternator in its original position. If you use an ECU you no longer require the distributor so you can relocate the alternator to the opposite side. I kept the distributor so I made a custom mount to lift the alternator about 40mm from the original position.
  25. I agree with sparky,79, and it will not fit in a "modern" garage, the gap is just too small to get through without needing paint every month. Once in a standard garage you cannot open the door enough to get out... Hence my GT3 lives out doors By standard garage I mean the kind of garage built on modern estates in the UK.
