  1. I used to love the accurate and easy to read Stack instruments on my old Elise and got frustrated when I changed to an Evora, especially with the speedometer, which is miles out. Not a HUD, but I went old school and installed a ScanGauge2, simply wedged between the bottom edge of the windscreen and the dashboard top. No drilling or sticking in place required. You can calibrate the speedometer to be spot on. It is the information from the ScanGauge that I use when driving, never looking at the car’s own speedo or rev counter. I also have it displaying coolant temperature and battery volts on its other two spare positions. Much better than the car’s own warning lights. Not fancy, but it works.

  2. They will accept offers. Some sellers have got no idea how much the things they are listing are actually worth and can’t be bothered to research it. So it gets listed at a silly high price, with the plan being to do some research once an offer comes in before deciding whether or not to accept it.

  3. A smear of silicone grease on the brake pedal switch and pulling out the plunger SEVEN clicks seems to have cured the traction control warning light problem for me, so far.


    For those contemplating buying a new switch, Bell & Colvill / De Roure have this SAAB part listed for £13.90+VAT.

    I think that it is the equivalent to the Lotus part (with a little fettling) and good value, if they can actually supply them at that price. See

  4. To try and stop the rot, I decided to drench the door handles with ACF50 corrosion inhibiter fluid. The very next day the car’s central door locking breaks! Coincidence???

    Anyway it was just a blown fuse, with the factory having installed one rated at 7.5A, instead of 10A as per the workshop manual. All working well now and hopefully the door handles will survive a bit longer.

  5. What look like flakes of rust keep appearing in my exterior door handle recess. Twanging the handle makes a few more fall out. I can't see where they are coming from. Maybe the handle has an internal spring that is already corroding? The car is 4 years old but lives outside.

    I'm contemplating ordering a spare pair of door handles (£17ish+VAT each) while they are still available, as at some point I'm thinking that they will fall to bits.

My traction light also occasionally comes on, always  in damp weather, and have never managed to find out why. I was thinking that it was possibly water getting into the wheel speed sensors or their wiring, but wouldn’t that mess up the ABS too? Not sure how dampness would get into the brake pedal switch in the driver’s footwell, unless it is water dripping off my wet shoes. I’m going to try the silicone grease on the brake switch trick to see if that cures it.

    I've looked back at my diary for last year and I picked up the car at the end of July 2020 after its compressor replacement, so it has lost enough gas to stop the air-con cooling in 8 months or less.

    My understanding is that the dealer tried doing vacuum tests and putting in UV dye to try and find a leak, but had no luck. Are there sometimes leaks that only blow and don't suck, so a vacuum test will not find them?

    It will be going in for its 4 year service soon so will ask them to look at it, but I don't want to be throwing money away on just re-gassing it again. I'm not sure what warranty Lotus will be prepared to offer on an just-out-of-warranty goodwill repair.

    Failing that, can anyone recommend a good independent air-con specialist who could look at the car?

    I don't want to have to be resorting to annual DIY recharges (expensive as my car uses the new R1234 gas) or air-con "stop leak", which I assume is total bodgery that could wreck the system!


  8. It has never worked reliably on the car ever since I bought it new in March 2017 and it has stopped cooling once again. I'm beginning to think that working Evora 400 air-con is a subscription service.

    I had it re-gassed twice, I think, at annual services during the 3 year warranty period and it would work well through the Summer, only to be no longer cooling come the following Spring.  Dealer did their best to find a leak but could not.

    Then last Spring the air-con pump seized, just out of the car's warranty, and was replaced as a good will gesture by Lotus. Air-con was working fine through the summer but once again, I have come to use it on cold on the first warm day of the following year only to find absolutely no cooling at all.

    Before anyone mentions that you should also use the air-con during the Winter to keep the system lubricated, I regularly used it blowing hot to de-mist the car during the Winter months. The Evora is my only car.

    I'd like to have working air-con but having to pay for annual re-gassing seems a bit much. My main worry is that a lack of refrigerant and oil in the system could make the new air-con pump seize like the last one did, making the car un-drivable.

    Any advice how to get it fixed once and for all?

  9. My Evora 400 is coming up to its 4th birthday!

    Under the new Lotus dealer fixed price servicing deal, the 4 year / 36000 mile service is available for £950.

    As that is quite a bit more money than the 1st, 2nd and 3rd year services, I'm assuming that it includes an auxiliary belt change? Didn't Lotus change their recommendation to have the belt replaced every so often, rather than just inspected?

    I'm asking because I had a new belt fitted less than a year ago, as the old one snapped when the aircon pump seized, so won't be needing that part of the service. Hopefully they can apply a discount for not having to do the work.




  10. Thanks. I'd never have guessed it was an interference suppression capacitor.

    I don't think that I've got much chance of re-attaching it where it is supposed go onto the front camshaft cover, as the supercharger is in the way: I can only just get a finger to feel the bolt hole, let alone get any tools into the gap.

    Luckily there's a nearby wiring-loom bracket bolted to the supercharger body, so I think that I'll have to re-attach the capacitor there instead. I've measured the electrical resistance between the supercharger body and the camshaft cover and it's less than 1 ohm, so I'm thinking it should still work alright.

    That's useful to know but also a little worrying. Changing an ABS wheel sensor, for example, is a simple DIY or local garage job. The car knows exactly which sensor is playing up, puts on a fault light, but it won't tell you which one it is. Your only option is take the time and expense of a trip to the nearest Lotus dealer for diagnostics, which may not be very near at all. If it's an intermittant fault then it could be a wasted journey if the fault has cleared by the time you get there. And don't forget that dashboard warning lights are now an MoT test fail, so the option of ignoring them is no longer there. Unlikely to happen, but what if Lotus were to go out of business and the already sparse dealer network culled?

    The car industry really ought to be forced to produce an open standard for reading and resetting fault codes for systems other than the engine, just as they were when OBD2/EOBD came in. In the US it looks like they've been trying to introduce "right to repair" legislation for around 15 years and not got very far, with certain car  (and computer - I'm looking at you Apple!) manufacturers opposing it, presumably because it would mean lower profits for their dealer networks. I've not seen anything about similar initiatives in the EU, but we aren't in that any more anyway. Rant over.
