  1. @mike_sekinger I have a theoretical question : Let's say the chargecooler kit is built and installed... Would the chargecooler radiator at the front interfere with the operation of the engine radiator ? Would the chargecooler radiator block / reduce the air cooling area of the regular radiator ? Thanks !!
  2. @cweeden I believe the most important part is the actual chargecooler... That would be great if we could source it... The rest of the piping, electric pump and radiator I believe we could each custom build..

  4. @mike_sekinger Thank you again for your response !! As always you provide true valuable information for all of us here at the Lotus Esprit V8 forum !! I am convinced the chargecooler is the best modification for my car.. I will try to find someone here in Athens, Greece that deals with chargecoolers that can fabricate a custom solution for me.. In the meantime, I tried watching your video but I get this message "We could not locate the item you are trying to view."
  5. You are probably right, I am probably overthinking about it.. While I understand the theory behind this modifications, what I wanted is more of a "magazine reviewer experience".. The so called "in the driver's seat" experience before and after the modifications.. Will I feel the difference on a daily basis when I drive the car ? How much % stronger does it feel in low / mid / high rpm (doesn't have to be exact just the feeling) ? Sometime without the intercooler/chargecooler my car feels like the engine is bogging down, saturated with fuel, not very responsive... Will this change with the addition of the chargecooler and rev faster and feel more responsive ? Thanks !!
  6. Besides the performance dyno data, which is very important, I would be interested to know on a daily drive situation, how the chargecooler makes the car's performance more consistent.. For instance, driving 20 miles, before installation of chargecooler performance would drop off after say 5 miles or in slower speeds, but with the chargecooler, would there be constant high boost power ? Thanks !!

  8. Thanks @mike_sekinger I know this might be too much asking, but any suggestion which water/methanol injection kit to buy for the Esprit V8 ? Anyone have any good experience with a specific system ? Thanks !!
  9. @mike_sekinger Thanks for the excellent explanation !! I now realize the importance of the intercooler / chargecooler... It is not so much the maximum power that is important in the Esprit V8, but the availability of the power all the time.. When things get hot in the intake it appears as if the wastegate opens and releases turbo pressure (my guess) , in combination with what you mention about dumping extra fuel to cool down the intake.. Which drops performance and makes the motor feel kind of sluggish sometimes.. Very annoying.. I also agree 100% with setting goals... For instance my goal would be : -to retain boot space -make the intercooler / chargecooler look like factory -keep the cost at reasonable level -maybe make this a reversible modification just in case I decide to remove this in the future (unlikely, but still no cutting of body parts is preferable) So I have carefully been reading the ProAlloy thread and it seems that the company is having hard time to deliver the kits.. Any suggestions / alternatives ? Thanks !!
  10. While checking this amazing threat about the prospect of Intercooler / Chargecooler on the V8 Esprit engine, I wanted to share some thoughts with you... First of all, from my experience in driving my Esprit I realized that when the car engine is cold, it pulls very strong and smooth.. When it gets hot it appears sometimes like it lacks the punch / kick... Could this be attributed to air intake temperature rising leading to lower boost pressure to prevent engine damage ? Secondly, assuming that a system that cools the intake air is installed, does this mean that the car will sustain turbo pressure more often leading to more constant performance ? And third of all, what are the advantages / disadvantages to Intercooler / Chargecooler ? In my opinion, an Intercooler is a cheaper, simpler setup, provided the air intakes are designed to cool the intercoolers... Furthermore, it might be challenging to avoid long piping resulting in some extra turbo lag... With regards to chargecooling, it is a heavier, more complex and more expensive setup, since it requires water piping, water radiator in the front and water pump.. So the cost is higher and more complexity added.. But it might be the only solution consider the tight Esprit V8 packaging.. Any thoughts on all 3 of the above points ? Thanks !! Makis
  11. I drove my car again for another 30 km of spirited driving with lots of turbo boost and there was no coolant missing.. I am starting to believe that the problem lies in the header tank.. Attached is a photo. When we fabricated a metallic coolant tank , my mechanic asked me if we wanted to retain the sensor and I insisted we do.. If you look closely, there appears to be red coolant on the plastic indicator, so maybe I should do away with this and just plug this opening too..

Update : So today I drove my Esprit V8 around 30 km of combined traffic, highway driving and spirited driving, and guess what, the car performed perfectly and not a single drop of coolant was missing... I am starting to understand what is going on.. When I am driving with a group of more modern sportcars like Porsche 997/991 and want to keep up, or I have a passenger I want to show the capabilities of the Esprit V8, I tend to drive more aggressively pushing the turbos and the engine limits and this sometimes might lead to a little cooling fluid loss... Not sure where it is going.. It could be a) head gaskets b) turbos or c) from the custom header tank which I fabricated and I foolishly installed the stock coolant indicator (My mechanic wanted to make the coolant tank simple with one screw type cap, but I insisted that we also make room for the stock plastic indicator)... So for the time being I will just avoid pushing the car to its limits, and drive it as I always do and enjoy it without any problems..

  15. I checked the oil and it looks ok... I will go one of these days to my mechanic to check the coolant circuit.. I think he builds pressure to the system with the engine off to see any leak.. John's system looks cool and I also plan to use it to determine what is going on.. I will keep you posted..
  16. I will definitely check to see where the coolant is going.. In the meantime, how do you explain the fact that I can go for 3 weeks without any coolant leak (checking the tank each week) under normal driving conditions... And if I push the car and drive it hard it could lose coolant.. Is the coolant loss related to fast driving (when the engine is under load or the turbos are forcing pressure) so that coolant is lost when the car had been driven fast ?
  17. Hi to all, It's been a while since my last update and things have been going pretty well with the car.. I rebuilt the V8 engine with CP Carrillo Pistons, original Lotus head gaskets, APR head bolts, installed Scotch key on the belt pulley for safety, and also rebuilt the turbos.. Everything has been going well, until last Monday when I drove the car and when stuck in traffic, it started to overheat at 110-115 Celsius.. When I pulled over and let the car cool down, it was missing 2 liters coolant, which I added. I drove the car for a week at night and pushed on the turbos, and when I checked yesterday it was missing 700ml coolant.. I am under the impression that the car loses coolant when I drive it hard and push the turbos beyond 4500 rpm... Could the head gaskets after 4000 miles since the rebuild be leaking? Could coolant be leaking from the turbos ? Thanks

  19. Based on my mechanic, we found the PRV stuck open.. Fortunately this happened at low rpm. Immediately I saw the oil pressure light come on and slowed down, but it was too late.. I knew something was wrong, the metallic noise, so I towed my car to my mechanic where immediately he diagnosed a failed conrod bearing.. The bearing that failed was the one further away from the oil pump.. My mechanic said it would have been worse if a piston had seized.. The verdict was that the previous owner had not changed oil regularly and as a result the PRV accumulated dirt and got stuck open. Of course we replaced the PRV with a new one, and I also installed an oil pressure gauge, since the 2001 cockpit only has water temp..
  20. @Joey4420 when my Oil Pressure Release Valve (PRV) failed and my engine suffered from oil starvation causing a spun conrod bearing, I had to dismantle and rebuild the engine. I had to replace a lot of parts, including new oil pump, head bolts and head gaskets, which are not cheap.. Furthermore, the labor was going to be expensive.. So I decided I had my one and only chance to upgrade the cast pistons with CP Carillo forged items.. The price was right, and I decided to go ahead and do so.. My crankshaft was repaired and rebalanced based on the new pistons, and I am very happy now to know that my car has forged internals (the conrods are already forged steel, so is the crankshaft forged steel)... So, even though I work with stock turbo pressure (I rebuilt the turbos, fitted K&N air filters, deleted cats and muffler - just straight pipes, and put Sport 350 ECU) I am very happy to know that my car now has much stronger internals than when it left the factory.. Just think that you get your one chance to put those pistons.. Of course you decide, but this is my opinion..
  21. My understanding is that turbocharged cars like the Lotus Esprit V8 twin-turbo warm up their oil and water faster than Normally Aspirated cars... This makes sense because the two turbos basically work like heaters for the fluids of the car... In the winter months, November-March here in Greece, when I want to go for a quick spin in the evening after work I will usually choose the Esprit, because among the other reasons that make the car great, it warms up faster.. My Ferrari 360 Modena for instance, takes forever to warm up, and if the weather is cold and I don't plan to drive very far, it doesn't have enough time to warm up and therefore cannot enjoy a spirited drive.. In the summertime with high temperatures, thing work the opposite way... On warm summer days, the Lotus Esprit V8 is kept at the garage, as performance drops and there is likelihood of overheating when driving.. The Ferrari is more suitable to warm weather...
  22. Coming back to the Esprit V8 issue, I changed the rears with Michelin Pilot SuperSport 285/35/18 And now I am looking to change the front. Unfortunately Michelin does not produce 235/40/17 So I am looking between Michelin Pilot Sport 4 or Michelin Pilot Sport 4S (I think I will go with 4S which is the replacement for SuperSport) , but the size is 245/40/17 Do you think it is ok to go with 245/40/17 front as opposed to factory 235/40/17 ? P.S. There is a small chance the 245 Sport 4S are not available in my country... and I will have to go with 245 Sport 4... Is it okay ??
  23. Both DHL Greece (terrible way they handle business) and of course Brexit, which in the end will mostly hurt UK business... Already planning to buy parts for my Ferrari directly from Italy (before it was Eurospares) and Porsche directly Germany (before it was or Eurospares)... In the end 145 million customers might turn their back to the UK.. bad for business If the limit for tax/duty free imports is 22 Euros and this includes the shipping cost, in this situation the shipping cost alone is 25 GBP, so basically there is nothing that is exempt from tax/duty which is crazy... For imports from the US the same 22 Euros limit applies, but I know it is not including shipping... So basically the Greek government or Greek DHL messed this up...

UPDATE on Brexit and DHL : Before I placed the order of the small Nylon / plastic part for the Esprit window (each costs 7 GBP) , I had done my research that anything below 22 Euro goes through customs without taxes.. So imagine my surprise when on Friday they call me from DHL to tell me that my order has arrived in Athens and I have to pay duties.. I explain to them that my total order is 14 GBP (I ordered 2 pieces of 7 GBP) which is below 22 Euro.. And then they tell me that I have to look at total cost including shipping, which in this case was another 25 GBP.. At that point I knew they were defrauding me... I asked for their supervisor but they declined.. So I asked them what I had to pay... "To begin with, you have to pay 45 Euros for the documents and fees...." As soon as I heard this I told them I don't accept the charge.. And they suggested they would send it back to sender free of charge.. I agreed and asked very politely the supplier to send it to me via regular ground mail, which would completely bypass customs as low value items.. The nerve of these people... Asking another 45 Euros for and order of 14 GBP.. Something that costs less than 2 GBP I would end up paying almost 90 Euro !!! Crazy... All this due to Brexit... Bad decision indeed...
