  1. Speak to Mike Taylor as he normally has some of these for sale. I think he wanted about 30 quid when I enquired about a year ago. You may be able to trade yours for a discount. Dermot
  2. Have you checked out the solenoid on the starter motor (as it provides the supply from the battery). it gives you the 12V supply to the coil on turnover that is needed due to the drop in V as the engine is turned. IIRC the normal supply with engine running is 9V but on turnover this drops to 7V ish but the solenoid bypasses this on turnover to supply a hi-er V. When I had this problem the engine sometime caught momentarily as I released the ignition from III to II. Spent ages trying to sort the problem, to prove the point I ran a line direct from the battery cable attachment on the solenoid to the coil and the car started, so I replaced the solenoid and all was well. 3. Me too Apparently we were quite the hogs on new posts on this forum. Dermot
  4. Mat, the tubes seem ok, but that wouldn't explain why, with the centre fascia flap open, I get very little air flow. On some further investigation I think the flap that determines re-circ/ fresh air isn't working. I have some skinned knuckles but I think this flap is stationary, closing the fresh air inlets. It's difficult to be sure as it's a very tight squeeze to get your fingers in the 2 apertures (and I have no young kids to abuse with this job), but I still don't understand why this would make re-circ air so weak. I have removed a side fascia vent hose from the heater unit and have found that no matter what the position of the air distribution rotary dial I can feel no air coming out here. My understanding is that no matter what the position of the dial you should always be able to get air from these 2 vents. Could it be blockage? This is one of those jobs that is mushrooming in terms of what I might have to strip out just to see the problem. Dermot Ok So I skinned a few more mil of my knuckles and can now testify that the re-circ/ fresh air flap is working. Now even if the mechanical screen/footwell is not I can only conclude that there is a blockage. Does anyone know if there is a way to test the individual fans on the heater (i.e. isolate power separately to prove serviceability)? Blockage is very depressing, but unsure how this would happen as wire mesh over sir intakes was in place on car. Dermot Ok so latest is I have used an old coat hanger and poked thro the 2 vents at the side of the unit and there was no blockage in either. I also stuck it down the 2 fresh air apertures at the bonnet and there was no blockage there. What I have discovered is that only one of the fans is working, so it looks like the whole unit will have to come out any way. Dermot
  5. Thanks Danny, that sounds reasonable. I have gotten enough trim out to see the control panel and I can see the wire moving the lever as it should and I can see the valves been opened and closed, and certainly the fascia vents in the centre panel are being supplied as I can see the panel move up and down as it should so there would not appear to be a vacuum problem there at least. What I can't tell is if the re-circ/fresh air flap is moving and whether the mechanical screen/footwell flap is moving. Either way with fan on 2, blowing hard and the centre console flap open I can barely feel any air at all. (BTW the temp control works as I can feel the difference between hot and cold air). I can't see any position of a flap (even if stuck in an odd position) that wouldn't allow air to come out somewhere, even if it were just thro' the side fascia vents. My only conclusion can be that there must be a physical blockage either before the fans or immediately after them. If so, this is quite depressing as the whole lot would have to be stripped out. 6. Hi I have started work on my Excel now that my dear old Elite has been sold. The first problem I am tackling is the heating system (non air-con 84 model): 1. The fan switch does nothing in either of the speed 1 slots but does in speed 2. 2. I think the heat control is working but difficult to tell as so little air comes out any vent. I have taken off the centre panel wood veneer thing and both rotary dials move the cable. I have removed some other bits of trim to see the contral plate on the RHS of the heater unit but altho' I can see the water pipes and the switch thingy I still can't see the control plate. So I am guessing that I will have to remove the entire front fascia to get access? 3. I did originally find that the inlet manifold pipe was disconnected and I have rectified this which sorted some rough running at idle (just as it did on my M100), so there is an air feed to the reservoir. Now assuming that if I can see the cables working at the rotary switch and they are still connected at the control plate it seemed that a vacuum issue was the most likely cause (i.e. one of the internal reservoirs or switches) but as the footwell/windscreen is mechanical I have gone back to a mechanical cable issue as the likely cause. Any thoughts?? Thanks Dermot
  7. The car has now been picked up by its new owner (previously an Excel owner) and he was delighted with the condition of the car. I was as honest as I could be with him when he phoned to ask questions which I thinks helps with peoples expectations. As I said it is mechanically pretty sound and had some minor niggles which would not effect day to day running. All these I had on my to do list for the summer when my house is complete. they were not difficult jobs. I really hope he enjoys the car as I will miss her. As he was a hands on owner I threw in the Workshop Manual as I would like the owner to look after her. Now I have to concentrate on the niggles on my Excel. Dermot
  8. None taken:) PS I've been to ABQ many times and never seen a Lotus there. You must keep it well hidden. Dermot
  9. When I did my cabin carpets I got them from Coverdales, I think the also do boot carpets as well. Dermot
  10. I don't think you need to have paint on your car to pass an MOT :) Dermot
  11. Why was the Tutonic Knight who championed the unmolested roof banned (i.e. Mica)?? Dermot
  12. As I recall there was a battery cover made of some of the thinnest wood/cardboard know to British unions in the 1970's! Most of these have now rotted away so you need to fabricate something yourself. Dermot
  13. A bit harsh to us owners. I'm not even 40 yet. Dermot
  14. Oh good, then i know we are all sane then as I am a member and they are a good bunch of guys.....................phew! Hopefully the site will attract all the old member of the other site. Dermot
  15. Shame, as you say, I thinks sometimes posts are lost in the translation, he does have a lot of knowledge. Altho' the word Riveria does seem to mean the anti-christ to him. Dermot
  16. Interesting, how do you get on with Dermot
  17. I don't know the characters personally so I can't comment, but obviously any website that helps the community of Lotus drivers has to be good......right? Dermot
  18. Hi all Just looking at the Esprit area and we appear to be very limited in where we can place our postings in terms of topics. Could I suggest we really need a separate area for electrics/electronics and for Parts Alternatives. It may be also be useful to have a Group Buy area and a Alternative parts section. A Projects thread could also be good. I know there is probably only a small number on at the moment but hopefully it will expand. Is this too much as there is also the other website: Cheers Dermot
  19. I do wonder how many are still on their original S1 unglavanised chassis like mine. On the old forum this would normally illicit a reaction from Mika. I haven't seen him on here yet.
  20. I know, but I can't afford to run 3. I keep looking at her beautiful lines and wondering if my lottery ticket will come good this week.
  21. I'd forgotten about this site, do you have a link to the register. Dermot
  22. STOP STOP STOP You're making it very hard to stick to selling my Elite! It's hard enough seeing her sitting in the drive looking better every day as the all the trim is all back in now. Dermot
  23. I have a registration form which my Dad filled in for this register. It was returned to a guy called Michael Marsh. I tried to follow this up when I took on the car but they seemed to have lost interest in the register. Dermot
