Additional water pump?

Recommended Posts

Would it be possible hypothetically to fit an additional electric water pump to the heater circuit with some kind of time/temp cut off so as to A) aid the heater circuit which has very poor circulation even after flushing the matrix and B) to act as a pump overrun to cool the engine after shut off?

What would be the potential pitfalls?

Pitfalls should be minimal, given reasonable attention to details. Davies-Craig, of Australia, make a number of apparently well made/engineered electric pumps including one for use in low volume applications such as heater circuit. I once test drove a Twincam Europa running a Jabco (Jabsco?) marine shower pump spliced into the heater circuit in order to cover off the disabled stock pump. Seems the thing had developed the leaking seal typical of tired TC's and the owner had found removal of the belt would mitigate the leak. Likely he had also used some sort of cooling system sealant which could then work once the shaft was immobilized, and the little pump was altogether sufficient for toddling around.
