I'm going for a sports racer wrap - do I do the sills in matt black or gloss black?

Recommended Posts

Howdy guys,

I'm going to get a sports racer wrap on my car and was wondering whether to go for matt black on the sills or gloss black on the sills?

I don't know what the standard factory look is?  but I was thinking a less glossy black in the sills might look good?  For sure the roof and mirrors will be gloss black, just wondering about the sills

You might be able to tell from my two profile pics, but mine is wrapped gloss (roof, sills, lower front spoiler).

I think it looks great and in silver, a matt black wouldn't look 'sharp' enough for me, not sure what colour yours in but I imagine a Red would suit matt black well, where as a yellow would not.

I was looking at doing a sports racer type of wrap on my roof and wing mirrors never thought of the sills or anywhere else ?

i was going for gloss black to offset the ardent red but now I was thinking maybe gloss black in carbon finish might look neat too ? Not seen this vinyl finish but assume any decent wrap company should deal in the product ?

I have even emailed Yanni of the tv but not heard back so not worthy of their attention ?

Carbon effect wrap would look good for sure.  Not sure who did the wrap on mine, as it was done by the previous owner so keep trying, its a pretty big market - lots of people that do it.  I'm sure if you search on here you'll get some recommendations?

Any small signage company which does vehicle graphics should be able to help you out, although wrapping is a bit more specialised as you are going round contours and curves, so check first.

The carbon vinyl is a standard product and pretty much any sign company will be able to get their hands on it as most vinyl suppliers have it in their ranges.

Mine was done by Lotus Silverstone by a previous owner, they offer this as a service - as you can tell from the many comments, its pretty popular and in my mind is a must (including the sills).  I think the car looks a bit too "fat" without it (just my opinion!).

Make sure you have a look in real life at the wrap beforehand.  There are some really good carbon fibre effect wraps and some really bad ones that you can tell are fake from a mile off.

I've seen an Evora roof wrapped in carbon fibre effect and to looked good!

I have a Burnt Orange Evora. I saw this pic of an orange Evora for sale at Leven Motors.  The sills look matt compared to the roof, hence I was asking the question.   But maybe its the same gloss as the roof and its just the way light falls on the sills

Have you any pictures of the carbon fibre effect and that applied to Sills ? I have barge boards so thought anything lower down would clash ?

i have also bought a wheel arc paint protection section in black which I thought might compliment the air intake grills ? Then inturn compliment the wrap on the roof / mirrors ?

The GT430 has a carbon fibre roof, sills and all sorts.  I think its a gloss finish but happy to defer to someone with a GT430!

@Cdm2018, I've just txted the owner of the silver Evora to see what he's got on his sills.  He also has carbon boards on his.  from memory I believe he was running solid black on the sills no carbon effect.  Looked great to me ... so great I'm also putting the same carbon boards on mine once the wrap is finished.

I don't think a carbon wrap would work well on the sills unless it was very closely matched to the carbon on the boards.

Yes I guess the addition costs of the sills wouldn’t be huge ? The guy I spoke to indicated cost £200-300 plus maybe another £75 for sills if I opted for that look?

it would make car stand out ? Do you think it’s worth waiting for decent weather silly but I was wondering if the anticipated cold temps are upon us the vinyl wrap may not be robust ???

Yep from the very little I know about wrapping I think the temperature is a concern when applying wrap but once its on and stuck down properly it should be fine.  The place I'm going to have a heated bay where they do the work so I think it should be OK.

This is the place I've been recommended : http://www.signsuk.co.uk  They do the wrapping work Lotus Silverstone and all have the templates etc so I think they should do a good job.

These guys are 25mins away from me almost next door to my sons workplace so I booked myself in next Monday as it’s only free day I have over next couple of weeks

Also their price is very competitive and more importantly they know lotus cars so I am in safe hands ! Result thanks

Saw this at Central lotus on 430 in showroom

didnt realise the detail on the roof comprised of the carbon effect and a red line down the roof lines as well

i will ask the guys at wrap shop if they can replicate this effect ?

There’s a similar effect done on the front bonnet cover for the washer as well

Ok no worries

I will ask them on Monday Andrew already told me the carbon fibre effect is a more expensive material so the price rises .

the red strip I am not sure if this will be a thin slither of red vinyl or will be my paint work as it’s red anyway ?

I will put pictures on Monday after it’s done on this thread

the carbon fibre vinyl has a brown/beige tint to it and the 430 has similar colour tones

Erm, no.

That is an actual carbon fibre roof. Not fake carbon wrap ‘effect’.

I think you are 100% correct!  :) That is paint and than lacquer 100%.

With regards to the earlier comment re the orange GT430 in Leven, the sills are definitely matt and not gloss and the same material was used on my 410 Sport. The SR's were gloss for sure.

I came into this world screaming and covered in someone elses blood. I'll probably leave it in the same way.

So if the base is red I need to ask these wrap guys if they will use my red roof as a sort of base then apply the Wrap over but how to leave that thin slither which follows the inside contour lines ?

I guess when I get there these people will know a solution ?

With regards to sills I will opt for plain Matt no point spending extra on carbon fibre as it will not be noticed

thanks for great comments

It be interesting to see if they can replicate the 430 ? I am thinking they made cut out a slither along the contour line of the roof exposing the red paint work or they might apply a thin red vinyl along the contour line ?

I think you asked about applying the vinyl to front splitter or lower bonnet area ? I have not seen an example on the internet so can’t really picture it ?
