Tail Gate Gas Struts

Recommended Posts

Hi All

Having recently been completely gobsmacked by the price of replacement gas struts, but equally impressed by the operation of a pair of brand new ones....!!!! As on BigSi's car, I have been searcing for a replacement and have come across these.....

For new struts your looking at just under

;) reeding now , just having another

ok, does anyone know the weight of the tailgate of the S3turbo, and the S3 .... in fact , all of them?

depending on wether the mounting is on the bulkhead , or half way along the engine will change the type of strut??

got to say Simon, the prices are better :)

my struts are 510mm long (550mm pin to pin)

stoke of 75-245mm

if the struts are slightly longer, then the hatch will open slightly higher, which could be better.

would not like to go shorter though

The weight don't really matter Dodgy......

The gas struts on the cars as standard are Lift-O-Mats and have the force rating printed on the sides......

All anyone needs to do is pop the tail gate, prop it up with a broom handle and read it off the side (in small lettering)

Then order some and loose the broom handle, with the collection of broom handles we could have another fire at mine...... when we burn the fence...!!!!

The longest length in the 8mm shafts, (which I think ours are, will check) measure 595mm pin to pin.... the next length is 535mm pin to pin....

I'd go for the slightly longer and have the extra room......

Fixed Gas Strut type - F-SD02-250*** (250stoke, 545 length + 50mm for the 2 eyes=595mm total length)

- 350nm

- Rod Ending Eye Type

- Tube Ending Eye Type

When i bought my car it was lacking gas struts..... im currently using a broom handle

but i was told by the previous owner that when he had the car he just opened the boot one day, and the gas strut ripped itself out. So be careful using a strut that is too strong.

But more to the point, i have nothing to go off, so does anybody have any idea what size/strength struts are in a S3 glass back?

And ill go for a pair of them :)

Which ones were yuo referring to Hilly, as the RS site link times out?

Was it?:

Variable stop & stay gas spring,620mm L 1824699,182-4699 RS Stock no. 182-4728 Manufact. part no. SSV1080800003 S Y 1 N

No, it was these.

Econoloc var press gas spring,464mm L, Part No 202-2507

However from what I can tell from the description you only get one adjustable pressure strut, the description is not very clear.

So instead I may go for these instead as you get a pair of adjustables, they are cheaper too.

No, not yet, I am kinda busy on other stuff to get the car on the road again at the moment.

I'll probably get them in about a month or so.

I'm trying to find a North American source for these Variable press strut (gas spring), 464mm L 8mm dia. I'm going on the testimony of those of you that have verified they worked for you. However, I am going to further the research to find the fitments that size was meant for. That way other sources can be used by plugging in whatever that application turns out to be.

The picture from their UK site, I've yet to locate these on the N. American one.....
