Hc Engine Oil Filler Caps

Recommended Posts

Hi all

I am in the middle of my unplanned partial rebuild of my HC turbo engine, & I come across this little problem:

DSCN4557.jpg

It seams the threaded part is coming away form the cap. You can see the crack around the base of inside of the thread. Looking at this It would appear this might be a common problem. Could be disastrous if was to split while out for a run in the car. So all those out there with this type Oil Cap, beware.

Ok, I thought to myself, I'll just buy another one. Until I saw how much they were at one place. Approx

Doesn't even look like the one that belongs on there to begin with. Mine says Lotus on it.

Thanks Matt, I will check on that this week. The one I have & shown in phot looks the same as what SJ is offering.

I have noted from my many Esprit books I have, that they all are black, however I also noted that earlier versions look the same pattern as the on I have.

You could be right there Arty, maybe its an alternative part that has been sourced, Esp with the GM influence from that time. If this is the case then must be able to get for a lot cheaper. What Diam Thread is yours Arty, mine is approx 38 mm. I would prefer one with Lotus printed on it.

I'll measure it up today! Also, I have some spares around from various cars I've worked on over the years. I'll see if another make fits, just in case you get in a jam.

The only reason I know about the Exel is I bought one brand new from Lotus many years ago. They come in black or red, the red is used on the Exel SE with the HC engine and red cam covers whilst the standard Exel had black cam covers.

Regards

I had the same problem at Castle Combe a few years back on my Excel SE. The disc part came right away from the threaded part. No-one at Combe had a replacement, but PNM engineering repaired it with epoxy, and I still have it today as a spare.

The original cap was black, but the replacement was red (purchased from a pukka Lotus dealer).
