My V8 is definitely brass, and pretty sure that the S4 is the same

Thanks Glynn. I'm pretty sure you're right. I've been crawling under it today but difficult to get a good look, especially of the end tanks. I could see though that the breather plug looks like it screws into a soldered boss piece.

Guess I'll use the green coolant instead of the red full organic specifically for all alloy systems.

Your other alternative are the newer Hybrid Organic (HOAT) coolants like Zerex G05 or Mercedes Benz coolant. It's low silicate (meaning it doesn't have the white build-up like the green stuff), phosphate free and lasts 5 yrs/150K miles. Mercedes has been using it for years as it's standard fill. It doesn't have the drawbacks of the dexcool silicate free coolants.

It's actually easier to get in Europe than the US...worst case just go to your Mercedes dealer. I've switched all my cars, including my 91SE and it's been great. What ever you do don't run the green stuff!!!
