maximum flip out screen size

Recommended Posts

Evening

Does anybody know the maximum size screen  you can install when upgrading your head unit before it flips out and hits the indicator stalk and indicates for you?

Thanks in advance

Yep, it's a good thread, specifics would be appreciated

What head unit are you thinking of installing Dan?

Have you considered the Joying single din Units? The 7” should fit well and not block the HVAC controls or the air vents. I was planning on getting one but haven’t got round to it yet.... GRP GT lights are more to my liking at the moment.

Any single din flip out will hit the stalk is the simple answer, and as the only flip out screen available on the uk market is the Pioneer Z7xxx range thats about it for flip out these days.

Once the screen is out its obviously not a problem as the screen doesn't foul the stalk if its not moving. I keep my screen out all the time as after thinking I wanted it flipping its a bit of a faff, so I like knowing I can but its not really an issue. Basically anything above 5.8" will hit the stalk.

You can see from this image that the stalk goes over the edge of a single DIN, so as said anything that is that wide (and even the older ones are) then it fouls. Buying an older screen with a smaller than single DIN is pointless as you won't have CarPlay, upto date satnav etc

For the Alpines:

iLX-702D fits, does not foul as to does not flip - but the deck needs spacing with a 10mm spacer and does not tilt, so looks and operates a bit rubbish, you need about 10-20 deg of negative slope so it leans back a bit

iLX-F903D also fits, and again can't foul as there is not a flip. It is a bigger screen and takes up a fair bit of real estate on the dash. It looks like this:

Obviously you can mount the screen a bit higher so it doesn't block the HVAC controls but covers the vents more

As an alternative you can use a Joying to similar effect with a smaller screen:

You really only have three choices for single DIN:

Pioneer Z7000/Z7100 - either cut the stalk (two cuts, drill two holes, dowel it and epoxy back together), or leave the screen up all the time - either work

Alpine iLX-F903D no problem with fouling, but a bit too big for me and loose the option of hiding. Also not cheap

Joying. Far cheaper but basically a fixed screen android deck, and the field of view is generally setup for LHD cars

Or convert to Double DIN: https://www.simplysportscars.com/shop/audio-and-security/101600-double-din-head-unit Hoffmans can likely do a UK supply, but you will need to cut your dash significantly. This does open up a world of options though.

Final alternative is this, the Pioneer SPH-108BT. It runs your phone as the screen so you can use satnav etc on it, but you can't have a rear view camera:

Thanks @MrP_ for the link to the Pioneer SPH10! I just finished the installation. Better Sound, and finally a great and sturdy phone holder!

Just make sure to not put the frame completely in. You need it to stick out about a cm. Otherwise the phone holder won’t fit in front of the vents...

@313 As per would be great to see some pictures of the SPH10 fitted. Assume you used a 10mm spacer to move the H/U out?

Useful thread @MrP_, thanks for all the pictures of various solutions.

Sorry had no second device to take pictures during installation. I will do send some.

I did not use a spacer. The frame of the stereo has a lot of bendable hooks that I could use to fix it properly in the desired position (similar to the one in the picture).

Something like this is useful, just makes sure you can see no metal from all angles and gives a secure mount as you can get the tabs pulling against the tension:

This might not be exactly what some of you guys are looking for in terms of screen real estate - but does simplify and add lightness vs some of the above solutions... no stalk blockage, can access vents and controls.

I use a Really Light Stuff phone mount with my phone in a quad lock case and then use for Spotify / Tom Tom app / harrys lap timer / Gopro control etc.

With the quadlock you can either have the phone vertical or horizontal depending on the view that you want.

The RLS Mount is available online and feels like it wouldn’t come off unless you have a big crash.

Brodit offer a similar Lotus Mount for quite a bit less ££ (about £30 I think) which is slightly chunkier.

I have a power socket in the passenger side A pillar dash cubby and can run a power lead to the phone if need be.

A few weeks ago RLS were showing stock but I believe that the business changed hands since the original owner and supply seems a lot more patchy.

I actually bought mine used in the UK.

A friend who wanted similar bought the Brodit Lotus Mount - which does the same thing and is a lot cheaper:

https://www.brodit.co.uk/brodit/vehicles/Lotus/Elise/2019.htm

It says Elise but will also work for Exige.

We both use the quad lock system to then attach the phone to the mount.

Stick one of these to the mount:

Quad Lock Adhesive Wall Mount - Twin Pack https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B008O0Y568/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_tHdADbPH2EH2Y

Then get one of these and stick it to the back of your phone or a generic phone case:

Quad Lock Universal Adaptor https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01M3Z4SSV/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_fJdADbHJGZ8F1

Or get a quad lock phone case specific to your phone model.

As above, gives a very solid mounting but is switchable between landscape and portrait position.
