My DVD Project

Hi Everyone,

I make full length DVD films as a hobby, sort of semi pro as it's part of my skill set being a multimedia designer. Hope to go pro someday! :no

I'm in the process of making a DVD, it's not just someone waving a camcorder about. This first project is on Lotus cars, my car and a couple over from SELOC are attending with an Elise and Exige. Filming is taking place at the end of the month.

If this one goes well, I will more than likely be planning another, so I'm thinking of just an Esprit theme for the next one. Just putting feelers out to see who would be interested in taking part? Filming would take place in Norfolk, some public road stuff and some off road and usually take place on a weekend. Sorry no fees or expenses can be paid, this is more to do with taking part for your part, but anyone involved does get a copy of the finished DVD and credited in the film. Part of the filming will involve being interviewed and it usually would require the whole weekend to be filmed. It all looks lovely and easy on film, but it does take a lot of planning to pull it off with the minimum of fuss.

Don't know exactly when this shoot will be planned for, but hopefully before summer ends, I want to find out the response to such a project.

PM me if you are seriously interested in taking part and what spec lotus Esprit you have, this helps me plan the shoot.

Thanks, :no

Owen.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for the replies. Doesn't look like I will have a no shortage of contenders for the filming. As for a different style to usual DVD's, I don't really know. I have some car DVD's and one is the Team Lotus one, made by the EV group. I'll try my best to come up with something interesting and different to them. I do have a presenter who is seen on film and does the interviewing. I'm just going to get as many shots as I can and see what I come up with. I already have a good archive of clips, what's great is I have a pro car mount, which is very useful for great shots.

Once this first film is complete I can then sort the Esprit only shoot out. About half a dozen cars is roughly what I'm looking for, too many and you will be filming into the night to get everything done!

Thanks,

Owen.

Hi,

Was out this evening (Thursday) with my mate filming my car. I decided to go to Mulbarton, a quite village just outside Norwich, thought that would be a good place to film, how wrong was I! :) The countryside is as popular as the city! Bloody cars passing our location every two minutes! :welcome: People walking by getting in shot, you have to hand it to programmes like Top Gear, the planning involved to produce good quality video without the bloody general public getting in the way and messing things up is a credit to them! :) We were there for about 1.5 hours, I ended up with 15 seconds of usable video from 8 minutes of captured footage!!!! :) But I'm going to finish this DVD, if it's the last thing I do!

My mate lives in Hethersett, so on the way home to his we passed East Carleton Manor, which I think use to be, or still is Colin Chapman's home, so I said to my mate that he is laid to rest in the parish church next door. I've visited the church before, but my mate didn't know Colin Chapman was there. We viewed the grave which has a nice head stone which has racing laurels around the ABCC badge style initials, but at the same time doesn't give any other hint to what such an iconic and genius figure lays there. There was some latin on the stone, but didn't know what it said. We wondered if he could tell it was an Esprit rolling up, "Yep that sounds like one of mine".

So more filming when this new wet spell passes! please give us some summer, one week without rain would be nice! :)

Owen,

If you're in one location for more than half an hour, word gets out and people purposefully drive by. They don't realise that anything they do that they think will immortalise them or make them look cool will simply end up on the cutting room floor.

People find ridiculous excuses to ask you questions when you're filming e.g. asking directions, then wondering if the film will be on the telly, what it's about etc.

I usually say it's a NatWest Bank training film and they suddenly lose interest (if not the will to live) and move on.

Years ago, when I was filming an interview with the MD of Little Chef outside the cafe on the A33 - we were on our 17th take thanks to interruptions - everything was going well until some plonker in a wallycar (Escort XR3i, remember them?) drove by and tooted his horn.

I completely lost it and grabbed the nearest object ( a clapperboard as we were shooting film) and threw it at the car. The car suddenly braked and the clapper smacked off his rear window. Still annoyed that he'd ruined the shot, I charged over just as he got out of his car and I realised he was rather a large gentleman. Fortunately he saw me coming, jumped back in his car and drove off at speed.

I went back and apologised to the MD of Little Chef for my behaviour, who said,

"Well, if you hadn't thrown that thing, I would have!"

Not everyone would have been so understanding......

Shooting a film takes time and patience. The general public are a trial. You're at the mercy of technical equipment, the weather, people who can't remember their own name when you point a camera at them, fading daylight and 1002 other things.

It takes perseverance and then a lot of time locked in a little room to edit it.

Keep at it, Owen.

You will get there.

If anyone sees Owen out filming, spare some thought for the time and effort he's putting in and let him get on with it in peace.

Been there, bought the T-shirt etc

Kind regards

Alan

There's a lot of filming that goes on around here. The procedure is get a permit from the council, let the local residents know using flyers and have the police keep the nonces out of the way. For example, they used to use a house up the street from where we lived to film shots for J.A.G. Every Tuesday the trucks would be there, together with a police car and some police signs to deter people from getting in the way.

Last weekend, they were setting up a crashed helicopter in the park where we walk the dogs but, as they weren't actually filming when we were there, they just had security to stop stuff being nicked.

Don't know what they do about noise pollution, though. I suppose they just dub all the noise onto the shot in the studio afterwards.

Owen, that Bond Esprit vid has more significance to me than the Zapruder film :(

You still haven't told the full story of how you blagged the ride; I see your certificate by Don McLaughlin, but who was the test driver?

In the garage no-one can hear you scream

Hi,

If you can get one movie to open, just use the forward and back selector to view the others next to the opened one, I'm also having problems getting them to pop up, I might have to post on You Tube.

As to you question Mark, I first wrote, back in the days when you did have to actually write the letter, to Lotus after the first open day I attended saying what a great day it was. They wrote back with some complimentary Lotus badge lapel pins, I think I have two left in the attic some where. Then when I attended the next open day in 1980 I think, I wrote again, this time a young lady wrote back named Cindy Curl, who was a Marketing Assistant. From then on I wrote to her for perhaps 5 to 6 years, in that time I would just receive these parcels through the post containing anything Lotus every so often. Posters, brouchures, badges, race T-shirt, stickers, anything. Then she wrote and asked if I would like a ride in the JB car, which I answered YES PLEASE! I joined another young lad who had won his ride through a competition, we did about three or four laps, reaching 120mph on the straight which was very noisey as the car had done 100,000 miles then!

For her thanks I made the wire Lotus Esprit mount, which she then got photographed and signed by Colin. I was a big follower of Lotus and the F1 team in my early teens, then like most people new interests, women and drink! I would have to say I have always loved Lotus as a brand and always will, my ultimate car is an Aston Martin, which I know is somewhat out of my budget, although I have driven quite a few of them, but Lotus is special in different ways, mainly the racing I think.

Although I love Astons for the cars I never followed them as racing cars, but Lotus I did, the 2004 Team Lotus event was quite something to me personally, bought back a lot of youthful memories see the black and gold cars again, I don't think we will ever see another team like Lotus again, I don't rate the teams we have now in the same league, I think it's all money driven now and sportsmanship has gone.

Hi,

Fixed the link to the first one, some script missing.

Mark it's good you mentioning Don's name, I wasn't exactly sure how his name went, I looked everywhere to find how it's written, I had to redo it on the electronic version because it has faded so much on the original, I can now correct it.

Did you notice the Caroline Munroe image at the end of the Bond video? I got that from the Star Wars club, which are friends with her, she comes to some of the signing functions that the club organise. I auctioned for the photo just before Christmas, had to have it regarding the connection with the Bond Esprit. It's perhaps not the most flattering image of Caroline, but she is one hot woman! ( I can't talk really, I take a lousy image!)

This image from the video is a scan (not this particular scan shown) from one of the original film stills, I have the full set, but I didn't have the poster worse luck.

Hi,

Well I'm still making this DVD project slowly but surely. I've spent most of the summer attending auto fairs and like, so have a good collection of video now to chose from. What I'm doing now is filling in some of the gaps, so today I visited Lotus factory to do some filming outside the front gate, this shot is a link shot required to connect talking about Norwich to Lotus cars. I spoke to Alastair in PR who was kind enough to grant me permission to film the site. While I was there I did some promo shots of my presenter Amy and myself. Now all I need to do is get on with it again and get it finished, but that's some way off yet. :D

Picture from todays filming.
