S3 Glass Roof

Recommended Posts

OK. This is a dozy question, I'm sure.

So, it's a nice sunny day (in the UK), and you take the roof out and go out. You park. Along come the clouds. And the rain. You end up with a swimming pool.

I vaguely remember someone telling me that you can hang the roof (in it's bag) somewhere in the car. However, (a) there's nowhere obvious and (B) the manual doesn't even mention the roof!

Any comments from other removable roof S3 (greenhouse?!) owners?

Rich

P.S. MOT, cambelt change + service this week sometime... tearing PROPERLY around the Dorset countryside for the first time - next week!!!!!!!!!! :D:D:D CAN'T WAIT!

there's no safe method for storing it. you'll notice it is very heavy. that's because like your front windscreen, it is structural. go easy driving with the glass removed. it puts extra stress on other parts when cornering. i wish they'd left a center bar in the removable roof design. then the glass could come out in two pieces. it could have been thinner too.

Rich,

The roof could be stored in the boot. there is a how-to on LEW.

Yeah, it's quite a big area the remove from the roof structure of the car - I've known other cars that work on the same principal (Diahatsu Charade Gtti - quite a smart car: 110bhp from 1 litre 3cylinder engine - but got very bendy when you took the roof out).

Does the same apply when the roof is up? I guess not, as it doesn't jam up against the bodywork, therefore all the strength is gained from the hinges at each end??

Thanks for the reply

Rich

Do you remember where - just spent 10 minutes looking throgh LEW and can't find it anywhere.

Also, thanks for the manual - it's been informative and interesting to read, and hopefully essential when I get the finally b**ger on the road! (imminent!)

when the glass is in, the roof is just as strong as the original composite roof. it's twice as heavy though. please don't store it in your boot. i've heard of them cracking in half.
