Which would you buy?

Recommended Posts

I only have basic understanding of car suspension so this maybe wrong but in general the rear of the car wants to be stiffer than the front, and having an overly stiff backend compared to the front tends to shift the balance towards oversteer.  Having the rear not much stiffer than the front leads to more docile handling and understeer.  But I think most of that is handled by the spring weight not the damper so should only see small change in handling.  You may notice more body roll in hard corners and bit more front end dive when hard on the brakes.

Did anyone who ordered the dampers actually get theirs?  I ordered a set of front dampers a few weeks ago and not heard back from them yet, my previous orders were delivered within a few days.  But today I got a email from pay pal saying the money has been refunded.   So either I'm getting free dampers sent a bit slower than they normally do or more likely is that I'm not getting any new dampers ☹️

If you need front dampers for an N/A, I do some have some - I was way to hasty a few months back and ordered them when they came up.  PM me if you're interested.  They took a couple of days to arrive.

Thank you for the offer very appreciated but mine was a "just in case" purchase.  Rears had a slight oil leak last year and needed replacing so when I saw these at the bargain price I thought I'd buy them and keep them just incase.  I just a had a service on the car and no reports of front suspension problems just yet.

I'm certainly no Evora expert but don't think I've seen Penske dampers being mentioned in this forum before?

Certainly the two brands are highly regarded in motorsports and I'd say are comparable in terms of product quality and performance.  But unless I have the expertise, time and budget to properly tune my suspension I would probably go for Ohlins as these have been used many times on an Evora so you have some idea what are the ball park settings for the damper.  With the Penske dampers you'll be starting from scratch.

I think the advise said previously on the forum still stands.

If you have the time, money and skill to consistently drive lap after lap to fine tune your setup then I think either option Ohlins or Penske will produce similar results.  Both are highly regarded brands and have a very good reputation in top tier motorsport disciplines.  I think in absolute performance there will be little to choose from.

I think it comes down what price you can get them for in your locality and what after sales and servicing support you have in your locality.  ie if there is a highly regarded Penske service centre down the road from you and the nearest Ohlins place is 250km away then Penske might be preferred.
