Wood Veneered Dash Trim

Recommended Posts

I am looking to replace both of my Wood Veneered Dash Panels on my 1990 Excel SE as the Center Panel has a crack

in the lacquer also the compressed paper base is delaminating along with a twist I think due to dampness by the previous

owner. The Dial Panel is also wavy so needs replacing as well due to the same damp issue. I want both replaced so the veneer

wood matches.

I have looked on here and all I have found are members covering the panels with all sorts of materials but none having

new ones made. I have tried Lotusbits and they only have old ones. I have tried looking on the net but none list Lotus or only

do kits to replace the veneer yourself.

My question is can someone recommend any good companies that can use my old panels as templets and make new ones

at a reasonable cost?

Many Thanks.

Ian.

I did the single piece dashboard on my Elan+2 many years ago in two pack polyurethane and a trick I used to stop the dust settling during the long drying time was to paint it upside down. I suspended it with thin wires such that the front face to be coated was on the underside. I then sprayed upwards onto the face..Perfect dust free result.

I think on the 1990 excel the later dash is curved rather than flat like the earlier elite/eclat. I've never owned a later excel with the later dash, and have only re-veneered the flat panels on an eclat, but I think making a new panel shouldnt be beyond the abilities of a half decent woodworker if you supply the originals as templates?

You could try these.

They refurbed my interior wood door trim, made a nice job, but not cheap.

How much did the Esprit dash run you? New masks, when they do show up (bookmatched sets) are hundreds of pounds, say 250-350 GBP...

Mine looks like ass. I bought some burr elm (91 SE spec) years back which I haven't gotten round to doing; might be worth it sending the lot to these guys?

Shan found a set of dash veneers on eBay for £200. Luckily enough when it arrived is was as new. If you want your refurbed, it must be worth mailing the guy with some photos and getting a ball-park price off him? He was good to deal with and only 5 miles away from me which was handy.
