Hi Pascal, welcome to the forum.

As far as I'm aware the black Lotus logo isn't an indicator of the year. Mine is an April 1982 car with a black logo. This S3 has the early indicator lenses.

Good luck with the purchase. Look forward to seeing some more pictures.

Chris.

Hi Pascal.

No, the black badge isn't related to Chapmans death - here's some more info: http://www.lotusespritworld.com/EHistory/lotusbadge.html

That looks very nice. 1982 is the best year for the Esprit

You need to ensure that the Cam belt has been changed in the last couple of years before you drive it, if in doubt get it changed. If the seller says that it was changed only x thousand kms ago - this might be years ago, get it changed.

Chris

Pascal

welcome and car looks mighty fine. I always thought the black logo was related to Colin Chapmans death. My cars are 81 and 84 and both have them. Never really got to the bottom of why and when they change between black and coloured. I think there are back ones on cars around the death of Jim Clark but i don’t believe anything is definitive.

Yes, the change to black for the logo badges was in response to the passing of Jim Clark, for whom ACBC obviously had the highest regard. The superlative results attained by Clark at the wheel of various Lotus in those crucial early years electrified driving and motorsports enthusiasts around the world, contributing immeasurably to what success the firm has enjoyed. RIP.

Consequently the change was introduced in 1968.

Thanks for your replys !

The belt has been changed in 2018 and I only have 300km to drive it at home.

Do you change the belt every 2 years ?? I think having read it was every 4 years.

The only real default of the car is the 2nd gear synchro. it is fine from 2nd to 3rd but not from 3rd to 2nd, but i will do a special post for this :)

Do you have the engine number available?

Earlier cars (before a specific number) had an issue with the crank thrust bearing oil feed which can lead to wear and crank end-float.

There may have been a mod done to counteract it which should be in any service notes, but at 80k I would say it’s worth checking.

as a rule of thumb, when it’s running, you should not be able to see any movement of the crank pulley in and out of the crankcase.

Mine has 75k and had almost reached the wear limit before I discovered the problem. (FLSH to 50k, then sold by Paul Matty at 67k, so I don’t believe lack of servicing was the issue)

And I believe 4years is the norm for owners on here with modern cambelt technology

Beautiful car btw. Good luck

Thank you very much Davey,

Here is the engine serial : CD912820720391

Any way to know if this engine is concerned ?

On chassis side, it should be galvanized, correct ?

Here’s the detail re the mod:

It’s a post by molemot about 3/4 down the page.

engine no 20875 seems to be the cutoff, so it does suggest you are in the “definitely worth checking” zone 🙁

and yes, S3 share the turbo’s galvanised chassis

Well, not a good news...

The car was serviced by FVH in Belgium, so it is possible they did it, but not sure...

Any way to check this during my visit ? Only visual control when engines is running ?

If the play is important, does it lead to an oil leak ?

Looks lovely.

Its also my understanding that the factory put black badges on cars when they matched the appearance.

Not sure about that roof mounted aerial. I'm guessing its drilled through? It still has the semi-auto one in the drivers a pillar area - wonder if it still works? It should rise when the radio is turned on. Most are so corroded internally that they fail and get replaced by something else - its a pig of a job to replace IF you can find a suitable alternative.

Looks very tidy though!!

Pascal,

do a search on “crank end float” on here, there is a wealth of info (some admittedly quite scary) about the varying stages, plus the correct way to check it. If the vendor is willing, I would do it properly with dial gauages etc...

and read the service history in detail, it may be included in there, but it would still be worth doing a full check since apparently there are two elements to the mod (one on the shell, and the other on one of the bearings...see @Matt-watts messages), and occasionally the second gets missed.

but dont let it put you off either way, looks a lovely car and Im sure some adjstment on price could be negotiated if necessary...

atb, Dave

Looks lovely - mine is similar specification. I would check that everything works - including the air con which you are lucky to have! The rear tires will be very old as they are NCT's and probably at least 10 years old. Fine for shows etc but probably not great in damp conditions etc. (mine were not great!) - The challenge is you are not able to replace the tires with matching front and rear original sized tires. I have Vredrestein ones on mine. 225 width at the back rather than 235 but they look ok. The fuel tanks rust so check there are no strong fuel smells. Check condition of suspension / brakes etc. The chassis will be galvanized. It might have been painted but they came just galvanized from the factory.

If the carbs have not been re-built at some point they will need doing. They have rubber accelerator diaphragms on the bottom of the carbs which can perish with age. they can then leak fuel onto the distributor...they might also be gummed up with old fuel. I would also replace all rubber fuel hoses as they also perish and too many Esprits have died catching fire... They don't cost much.

Thank you very much to all of you, this is really appreciated to have an active community around the Esprit !

The S3 is now very difficult to find here in France, in European version and with French title.

I prefer for far to have a car in very good genuine cosmetic condition, with some mechanics to do on it, than a car fully repainted and rebuilt.

However, the asked price is in the high range : 30000€.

If it needs extra 10k to do engine/gearbox work, the final price is really high, even if I'm sure that the S3 price will increase in the next years.

Here is a picture of the engine.

There is lot of pictures stamped 'Photobucket' that stay blurry, is there a reason for that ? Thanks !

€30k? Wow! That is on the high side, even if t does look like very good original condition....a roadworthy RHD failed to sell on ebay recently for £16k.

Those carbs look rather stained as it there’s been fuel spillage on them?

Do you have a Lotus specialist/enthusiast available who could look it over for you?

Photobucket are blurring the images until the owner pays for a subscription. I moved away from that site when they initially tried to force everyone to pay.

For 30k you are getting into Turbo Esprit territory - although looking at autoscout, it does look like prices on the continent are quite a lot more than here in the UK.

£30k for an n/a!? I wouldnt even consider that. As above you can get a very well sorted Turbo for that money or less! Should be no more than £20k imo, £25k for a mint one.

I think it's slightly on the high side for an S3 in the UK but it does look in very good condition and as if it's been well cared for.

Assuming that you could get it for say €26k, at the current exchange rate that's £23,150 which, I suspect is close to a fair price.

Personally I think a well sorted S3 is a better proposition than a non-standard, perhaps ropey, turbo 🙂

Yes, prices are really higher here, i haven't seen an esprit under 27k for a while, i can even say that i did not see an esprit giugiaro for sale since several months...

I do not search a turbo, i prefer for far the n/a look :)

Unfortunately, there is no Esprit specialist in France.

Hard choice guys !

There is no shame in wanting a N/A car. If no one wanted one, they would soon disappear for good.

I agree that prices are higher in Europe but I also think you should try and negotiate down based on the gerabox issue. :)

It's getting there......
