Whats The Best Muffler?

I thought i would slap together a homemade exhaust this weekend, out of readily available parts from the auto parts store.

What would be better, straight thru glass pack, like cherry bomb?

Or a standard oval lower restriction muffler, like dynomax or magna flow.

I dont mind to much noise, but would the straight thru sound stupid on a 4 cylinder?

I really am looking for a little more power.

I just installed a custom exhaust on my Esprit. I went with a magnaflow (not the Camaro muffler) and it sounds great! Its basically a housing with a perforated Y pip inside of it. Very low restriction. I was going to install a glass pack, but when I took it to my custom exhaust shop (they build exhaust systems for Porsche turbo race cars) they told me not to run a glass pack because with the exhaust gas temps I would be running with the Esprit I would cook the fiberglass in the muffler. So my vote is for the Magnaflow

Makes sense, But I have seen some straight thru mufflers on other Esprit's.

Built in internal vent tube... I got tired of melting muffler guts...

Is that what happens? The heat is so high it tends to melt mufflers?

I guess the best bet is to go with an oval steel with no fiberglass.

I went with SJ's Sports exhaust. Cheap enough, does the job and sounds soooo much better.

Just order a nice stainless straight thru muffler from Magnaflow. Stainless packing and everything. These 4 cylinders are the sweetest sounding on earth IMHO! Open 'er up. Make sure you weld it up nicely or the heat will burn right thru a poor weld!

Artie, does it really get that hot back there?

Well I was going to clamp it up and make sure everything fit and I liked it, and then I can take it off and weld it up, and pop it back on.

Nothing serious...some autocross, mostly track-days...

Well, I had to put a tip on that was 2" longer than the old one after I put the 330hp chip in as the new paint was starting to bubble and melt on my bumper! Remember the turbo is on 3 feet up stream! Most turbo cars the turbo is 6 or 7 feet forward of the muffler/s! You should really have it welded up, any decent shop should be able to do it in less than a day!

It looks to me as if the stock system is nothing exotic, just some regular piping, and one giant heavy over size muffler.

I thought that any piping and standard low restriction muff would work, but it sounds like I might be opening a can of worms.

I never took notice of the heat coming from the exhaust area.

Some of the muff and pipe that you can get from the parts store say that there stuff is good up to 1500F, I would think that would be good enough.

Artie, I would have everything welded at my shop, I have a full welding facilty at my place.

What about pipe clamps, exhaust hangers and donuts? Will these all burn up?

Pipe clamps would work...... But with the amount of vibration coming from these engine's I wouldn't trust them to stay tight long....Rattle, rattle! Exhaust hangers would be fine, any decent muffler shop should be able to fab up some hangers as the stock mounts are rubber isolated already, just need some bolts/hangers welded to the piping/muffler. That isn't a problem. Don't think rubber donuts would work, especially considering the muffler would probably drag the ground if they used donuts! Obviously the stock muffler was designed to quiet the motor/turbo down and keep some back pressure in the exhaust system to help light the cat off. With no cat and no EBPV, a decent stainless system should be employed for longevity and looks. Too much mild steel will rust, ever start the car and watch the condensation spit out whilst she warms up? This gets in the mild steel and will rust from the inside out, even if you don't drive in the rain. Even though stainless may eventually start to corrode, it's much less prone to "rotting" out, more a surface contamination. Thus lasting far longer and looking great, heck you can even have it polished to a high shine if you like!

Rubber donuts? Never heard of those, what I was reffering to was those asbestous or something round things for the connection at the valve, remove the valve and replace with donut.

My valve is just there as a spacer , the inside is cut out.
