Gold FFM Popular Post Sparky Posted October 1, 2022 Author Gold FFM Popular Post Report Share Posted October 1, 2022 Sorting through some unidentified media, I stumbled across a treasure trove of Concorde pics from late 2003, and I've posted a tiny fraction of them here. Most of these were taken in October and November, around and after retirement. They were all taken by a mate who was a Concorde engineer, but I know he wouldn't mind their being shared. In no particular order. Some poignant ones here. Don't remember Graham taking this one! I'd arranged a Concorde hangar tour for some American enthusiasts. Some great entries in the tech logs for those final flights... Aft baggage hold, rarely seen. Can't be certain, but I believe this was Alpha Fox the day after her final commercial. Couple of 593s. Concorde staging. From tail staging. A good shot demonstrating function of the buckets. The pipes. Loads of fun strapping down here and running the engines up! The last time one could capture 3 together, I believe. I'll let you guess what this is. Olympus engine change. Quick pad change! Sentiment ran high in the company. Just a few more of many thousands in my Concorde collection. I miss her... 8 2 Quote British Fart to Florida, Nude to New York, Dunce to Denmark, Numpty to Newfoundland. ramjet
Why was the Concorde removed from service? My last memory that I can recall was the crash after the Concorde rolled over after takeoff. I can't believe how cramped the cockpit looks, even the luggage compartment. What would prevent the aircraft from being brought back to service? Technology? Performance? Public perception? Cost? Airframe age? Quote All we know is that when they stop making this, we will be properly, properly sad.Jeremy Clarkson on the Esprit. Opinions are like armpits. Bravo73
Airbus effectively stopped supporting it (from an engineering perspective). This is what would also stop it flying again. Also, bear in mind that Concorde is now very, very old tech. There is a new wave of supersonic passenger transport on the way:

jep
9/11 terrorist attacks is what finally killed Concorde. BA had brought it back into service after the fatal crash (25th July 2000) - much to Air France annoyance. Air F didn't make money with the plane but BA did (operational if not historical). BA spent a lot of dosh to get a fresh Airworthiness certificate - Kevlar protection on the fuel tanks and more robust tyres being the biggest modification. Concorde flew again on 17th July 2001, a test flight. More tests followed and commercial flights recommenced on 07 November 2001. Passenger numbers were significantly down on pre-July 2000 due to many Americans not flying post-9/11. Concorde was loss making and BA pulled the plug in 2003. Of course the tech was old and I'm sure parts etc... not easy but if it had made a day to day profit, BA would have continued for as long as possible. Gold FFM Sparky Posted January 22 Author Gold FFM Report Share Posted January 22 A little-known fact is that 9/11 saw the sad demise of a significant number of Concorde passengers and travel budget signatories. We poured huge investment into Concorde and made it a prestige brand. It had a break-even load factor of 40-odd percent, and almost invariably achieved that for years. It was the most effective marketing tool any airline could ever dream of. Conversely, Air France simply branded it as a fast First Class, and never really leveraged it in the same way as BA. I won't go into AF engineering or operational practices -that has been done to death- but AF had a couple of other very nasty close calls with the aircraft and had wanted to pull the plug for some time. Airbus would only continue support if we took on AF's share of costs, but we couldn't justify this post-9/11, so we were forced to retire the aircraft. 1 Quote British Fart to Florida, Nude to New York, Dunce to Denmark, Numpty to Newfoundland. jep
Branson PR stunt. There was no real chance, it just wasn't profitable. I suspect Branson would have happily operated it at a loss but the Virgin Airways board wouldn't have.
