All we know is that when they stop making this, we will be properly, properly sad.Jeremy Clarkson on the Esprit.

Opinions are like armpits. Everyone has them, some just stink more than others.

Well, I won’t bother listing them but with the latest purchase the list has hit 93 cars. At one point I thought @lotusleftlotusright had started writing the list for me, we have similar taste, or lack of it :-).

Yes, @LotusLeftLotusRight has good taste, just needs to get some Jaguar on the driveway.

  • 1986 Volvo 340 1.7 (first car, many breakdowns)
  • 1992 Volvo 440 1.6 (comfy, basic)
  • 1995 Vauxhall Cavalier 2.0 (great all-rounder, ate head gaskets)
  • 1996 Alfa Spider 2.0 (fun, pretty)
  • 1998 Saab 9000 2.0 (comfy, huge carrying capacity, boaty)
  • 1988 Esprit Turbo 2.2 (pride and joy, could always use more attention)
  • 2002 Alfa 147 1.6 (surprisingly the most reliable of them all, noisy engine on motorways)
  • 2005 Alfa 156 Sportwagon 2.0 Selespeed (deeply flawed, loveable)

Bold ones still with me.

That first junker of a Volvo cost me £100 to buy and £1100 to insure - young driver problems!

Good thread, I did this list recently as I saw somewhere you can get a poster get made up with them all on, and in the right colour - I started to prepare then forgot where I saw it.

Anyway in order starting with oldest, some had at same time as each other, easy to spot the toy and sensible cousin

Opel Kadett (way cooler than a Vauxhall chevette!)

Escort MK2 (same blue as Paddys on TG!)

Beetle (shed)

Mini (original - another shed)

Cortina Mk5 (shed)

Escort Mk3 (shed)

Beetle 1303 (curved windscreen)

Austin Healey Sprite (not a midget)

Volvo 480 (finally got a proper job)

Beetle (early sloping headlights model- very cool)

Peugeot 305 (start of the sensible years)

VW Passat

Elise 111s

BMW 3 touring

Evora Launch Ed

Volvo XC90

Evora S IPS

Elise 111r

Mitsubishi ASX

Porsche Macan

Evora 400

the last 2 are both current cars....

The Elise 111s is the one I miss most and wish I had kept.

At the last count, I think I have owned around 65 cars in all and travelled many, many miles in most of them. I won't bother listing them all but just a few high points and a few low points.

High Points

My first Lotus, a 1964 Mk 1 Lotus Cortina - I loved this car for many reasons, not least its abilities as a err 'passion wagon.'

My 1st and 3rd Elans

Cortina 1600E - discovered only last year that it is still in use, having been restored, and was surprised to see it at a car show in Kent.

Exige V6

Mercedes CL600 - sublime in every way

Mercedes 420SL - not particularly quick and didn't handle very well, but what a way to arrive on a sunny day!

Low Points

BMW 528 Touring - without a doubt the least reliable car I ever owned. Wasn't a case of when I would arrive, but if.

Citroen BX - I still don't know what possessed me and the less said, the better!

In one way or another, with the above 2 exceptions, I have enjoyed pretty much all the many cars I've owned since I started driving in the '60's. Owned 4, 5, 6, 8 and 12 pots, so nearly have the full set, just 10 and 16 to go! :D

Here's one of mine that I had when I was in my 20's

Love it, this was my first wedge which I swapped for a MG Metro Turbo, it was a 84 1500 in black, loved it until the re-MOT day came and had to scrap it due to rot. These days I would have repaired but couldn’t weld in my teens and my dad was too busy restoring other classics. I would like to drive one again someday as remember it going quite well and nice with the roof off. 😎👍🏻
Dave :)

Do or do not, there is no try!

I read yesterday in a book, printed in 1988 called 'Hot Hatches', that the turbo for the Metro was developed by Lotus.

Yes you are correct, I had a few in the day passing them on as they died. Good fun cars but certainly seemed to eat the gearboxes driven hard.

You don’t see many anymore on the road either so values must be going up well.

My mum had a late X1/9 back in the day. “Lido” Edition. I used to drive it quite a lot. Strange (and vague) rectangular plastic gear knob. Not particularly fast and poor brakes, but nice and light with what sounded like a hair dryer motor spinning behind you ears. I imagine that the last 1999 on Toyota MR2 roadster would have been a similar driving experience, but I have never been in one.

Of all the cars I have ever owned and to my eternal shame I am truly truly sorry to say I bought the ex Mrs a brand new Vauxhall Tigra...😔😔😔😔😔

could have been worse, could have been an MG..... Oh hang on bought her an MG Metro Turbo too ...😔😔😔😔😔😔😔😔😔😔😔😔😔😔😔

And I don't even have any pictures of it, but I do remember it emptying its sump outside a chemist one day, a common problem they had....

MG Metro Turbo

I had an MG Metro Turbo and it was a bloody hoot. Had it for 3.5 years I think it was and around 60k miles and it never let me down at all. It was bloody great fun at the time.

The was the interior which was very smart and wore well:

Mine was moonraker blue and if you got your gear changes right flames out the exhaust and a wonderful "pop pop pop" on the over run.

Alcohol. Sex. Tobacco. Drugs. Chocolate.  Meh! NOTHING in this world is as addictive as an Evora +0. It's not for babies!

The first guy to ride a bull for fun, was a true hero. The second man to follow him was truly nuts!

If the Renault 5GT Turbo did not exist, I would have a MG Metro Turbo. Light, skinny tyres, turbo (Lotus developed), fab interior.

Everything a cheap, fun, practical hot hatch should be. It may have lacked a 5 speed box (?) which was probably unforgivable at the time but frankly it was a bloody miracle BL/Austin-Rover still existed so I can let that go. And they went on to develop the K Series engine (with Govt assistance) so we have a lot to thank A-R for.
