cam housing to head gasket

Recommended Posts

Am I right that on "later" engines (I have a Series 2) there is no such seal as no 17 in the picture? I haven't found any under my cam carriers. At SJ it says part No. A907E0203Z is for "very early engines only. Up to engine number 11276". So I use silicone sealant?

Not silicone, but anaerobic sealant

Lots of choices these days. Greatly improved products compared to what was available in the 1980s.

My favourite is Hylomar 2000 Gasket.

It needs to be a zero-thickness  anaerobic sealant, and there is one specified by Lotus, SJ sell it. It's not cheap but if not zero-thickness it will mean setting shims is a pig of a job as you'll have them determined using no sealant, put the goo in place, put carriers on and suddenly the gaps are all too large.

I have just ordered parts yesterday and had added PG06P. I guess that's the stuff we are talking about?

Brian Angus wrote an article about sealing these some years ago in Club Lotus magazine. He mentioned ambient temperature when you do this work....Many weep as they are adhered in too low a temperature (EG. A cold workshop).

Brian was senior vehicle engineer at Lotus for 35 years.

Don't use too much sealant. Just brush it on before assembly.

Would Loctite 518 be suitable for use on the engine? I like the idea of a roller applicator.

Signature not working...

Only if you assemble ASAP after application.

Yes, 518 has largely replaced 509.

Margate Exotics.

Seems like the sort of products best to use for MBP to block joints as well?

509 (or 518) or Wellseal are the Lotus recommended for the bearing housing to block.
