Boris would have been a perfect V.P. candidate choice for Trump. The current political circus here in The States would be even more entertaining than it is.

Now, as a certified "colonial," I don't pretend to understand all the nuances involved with the U.K. Brexit, And, as a recent "returnee" to the forum, I've got lots of catching up to do (case in point, I saw the coolest looking car yesterday in Austin, and only through today's forum surfing realized it was an Evora 400, having been under a rock for so long I hadn't known of its release). My immediate question is how do TLF members stand on the issue...in percentage values. Is it as close an opinion spread here as the actual vote was?

Second question, why, after plummeting like a stone in the aftermath of the vote, did the U.S. stock market rebound to historical highs in the following weeks? Can it be that all is not lost after all? A little elucidation is in order for those of us in the back row. Some of these machinations remind me of how certain Texas politicians and ranking officials in the state government raise saber rattling cries to secede from the Union whenever "Washington" passes any regulation not tickling their fancy. Of course, they always forget to mention that the State does not have its own standing military with which to carry on business as a separate entity, but hey, what with everyone packing heat anyway, what's the difference? And the Alamo is being "refurbished," so what's not to like? Yeehaw ya'll!

"Texit" bumper stickers anyone?

Cant agree here. I think Boris fools people into thinking he is clever by being well-educated which is not the same thing. Mrs May is genuinely quite clever. There is also an adviser lurking behind called Nick Timothy who is very bright.

I'm so out of touch @Iconic Ride that I thought Texas got it's independence in the 90's led by a Ranger called Walker!

With regards to the financial markets, we've seen similar here with regards to the FTSE crashing, and now rising to its highest level ever thanks to Bexit. Can't say I fully understand all the reasons but I do know a lot of people make a lot of money in these circumstances.

Brexit has truly rocked the world order. Who would have thought that this quiet little island, that many regard as insignificant, wouould cause so much turmoil ;)  I do know that there is a lot of guff from doom merchants and an awful lot of anti-democratic activity from the losing side. I think it needs time to see how things play out but in this internet connected world time is something people do not seem to prepared to wait for / invest in.

I think the split on here was around 50:50 remain and leave,

I suspect it's more like 'How could anyone in his position not be intelligent?"

I'll leave you with this candid photo of our new Foreign Secretary..............................

Love it. A politician who is not so far up his own arse he can, like most ordinary people do everyday, make a prat of himself whilst having some fun to get his message across. He's hugely patriotic too and unlike many politicos his first response is not too apologise for Britain or being British.

GoBoJo!

I'm totally sick and tired of the insipid, neutered, political muppets that have no imagination whatsoever, that follow the same path through Uni with a bloody PPP whatever degree, never do a real job, then end up representing the people who do.

WtF is that all about?

Tea and revolution. Let's go and conquer the world again.

I think what Boris portrays to the world as a lovable buffoon is a carefully executed show. His time a London Mayor seemed to go pretty well.

The Guardian has been so overtly negative with stupid brexit fear stories I hardly trust anything they say anymore. Still for me it doesnt really matter what the other countries think about Boris. More about the results he gets.

Sadly it's not just the Grauniad reporting that, it's all the media outlets, although we should be thankful he's not involved in the Brexit negotiations. I'm sure he's a nice guy, I'd certainly be happy sit sit and have a beer with him, but he's made so many unstatesmanlike gaffes in the past, he's viewed by many powerful figures as a clown.

Still, we will see how he performs. I can't imagine him simply fading away, cos he'll always be newsworthy!

Yup. He's a clown. OK. But then all the worlds a stage for him now too and I believe that he will surprise us all with his performance.

At least Boris has the likeable,in my books anyway, attribute of saying what he really thinks.

These many powerful figures who think he is a clown are probably not looking forward to deal with him as I believe he will really put the country first and not just do what they want him to.

Time will tell I guess. I hope hes able to negotiate the best deals.

I did hear there are lots of other countries banging on our door wanting to enter free trade deals with us that arent being reported upon from BBC or skynews.

I heard that, too.

So the media has moved from talking it down, and being prophets of doom to not reporting anything that might be a positive step forwards for us.

Typical.

Perfect. So no matter what I say I'll automatically offend half the membership. Sheeshh!

I'll happily "come back into the fold," but only if I get to dump a crate of Tetley Earl Grey into London harbour to even things up a trifle.

Dump as many crates as you like. I hate Earl Grey tea - that bloody fancy perfurmed nonsense - yuck.

Now, if it was Yorkshire Tea you were dumping, we'd be at you with our shotguns!

More utter shite from the bbc and the guardian

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-36821574

boo hoo big business and developers are suffering - what a shame - who bloody cares frankly. Here comes a rant......

a working man should be able to support a family and buy a house on a modest wage - say a factory worker driving a forklift or a garage mechanic..... Currently probably 99.99% of all property is out of reach of that sort of person. Is that right ?? Really ??? We need to wake up to the fact an enormous market correction is required and we need to build an enormous quantity of housing. The whole setup we have in this country with regards to such things stinks.

I'm no socialist that's for sure - but the present setup is utterly fubar'd

Loving reading The Gurniad, tearing it's heart out.

This could be the end of Labour as we know, if they're not careful UKIP will become the working man's party.

I think the Labour Padty will survive, after all it did OK after the gang of 4, 5 whatever split off to form the SDLP was it?

However, it will be interesting to see how its core support changes. New Labour under Blair et al took it more right and upward. As a result they totally lost touch with their core working class supporters, especially in the North.

Corbyn seems to appeal to the trendy lefties, big on social everything and giving other peoples hard earned to those less deserving but needy. These are also not the tradiditional core supporter base.

So, I can see a hole, it won't be filled by the Liberals, so @jonwatyou may be correct in foretelling a move to UKIP. Though they do need to broaden their appeal through a softening and more expansive agenda. Could happen. Especially if the economic signs of Brexit look more positive through further financial and economic turmoil in the EU.

I'm just a working class lad - grew up in a top floor flat on a council estate.

never been given anything on a plate - and don't want it - but I'm really struggling to see a party that really suits my value set

Council estate flat? Luxury!

We had a one-bedroomed top-floor hovel that backed onto the train station. Think Elwood's bedsit in 'The Blues Brothers' but with less frequent rains, due to British Rail's incompetence, and strikes. Three rooms no bigger than the boot of an Esprit, with the bog on the next floor down, and a bathroom on the floor below that, that we had access to once a week.

You don't know you're born.
