Well it appears we may have it - just heard a Doctor describe the symptoms and it matches ours 100% - not quite a cold and not quite flu. Carina is suffering a lot more than me, but in reality for us

UK Virus ALERT   The English are feeling the pinch in relation to recent virus threat and have therefore raised their threat level from “Miffed” to “Peeved.” Soon, though, level may be raised

All it seems lockdown has achieved is to plunge thousands and thousands of businesses into the abyss of bankruptcy. Placed hundreds of thousands on the dole, made folks lazy and depressed, put individuals firmly into debt and certainly in the case of Worcester - sped up the demise of the high street.

Im no conspiracy theorist - but this China Originated Flu as serious as it can be for some appears on the surface of it to have been made out by the MSM to be worse than Ebola.

And yet still, some people, media, politicians and experts are crying that the lockdown occurred too late and the Government should have acted quicker.

Which would have made the issues for businesses, jobs, high streets etc worse not better.  Damned by many if they do. Damned if they don't. Impossible to win.

I think @C8RKH if the lockdown had been earlier it wouldn't have needed to be as long - however more people would have simply ignored it as the "death toll" wouldn't have brought home the message.

We are where we are, we just need to try and get things built up as quickly as we can without risking a repeat.

We'll never know @Colin P. Looking at the behaviour of the Covidiots these days all that would have happened would have been people whinging earlier re the lockdown and we'd have had mass "breakouts" with all that lovely weather in May so we'd be back in Lockdown again with localised hotspots all over the place. A small minority of the people are just being selfish arseholes and don't seem to understand that close contact (i.e. socialising) is what will spread this virus regardless of the "R" number at the time, all it takes is one infected person to spread it to everyone in close proximity and then wham bham....

So the exponential case growth in London would have just stopped as per the Trumpian model of the World

So if all it did was put thousands out of business it did nothing to slow the spread of COVID.

Absolutely. Now look at the curves in places they haven’t had lockdowns - and it’s all much the same as here but without the huge damage to business.

oh well - let’s just see what happens the other side of all of this.

Like the USA and Brazil. Let's follow them. We can all be selective with stats.

The real bollocks was successive governments not doing planning for a pandemic in contradiction to the initial claims from the government that we have been planning for this for years. Nobody learned the lessons from Taiwan, South Korea or Japan. They all had outbreaks but had rapidly put in place local lock down with effective tracing. Hard learned lessons from SARS. Even Hollywood knows that to contain an aggressive virus you need to trace an impose local restrictions. Instead we would implement a "world beating" system which we are about to scrap instead of looking at what successful countries did.

With more prep and less ego we might not have needed a national lockdown. That is not where we were and we still do not have an effective track and trace system.

I don't think ego came into it to be honest. With hindsight it's easy to criticise and point fingers.

Yes I agree with you that successive governments for what, nearly a hundred years since the Spanish flu killed millions (much more than Covid), and a decade or two since SARS etc have done little. Have not done enough in our eyes now. But then I also assume they have had lobby groups after lobby groups, complainers and whingers, whiners and tossers all shouting for focus and attention on todays burning issue. Not saying they could not have planned better, just saying there were lots of competing issues.

However let's turn to a more burning question ( at the risk of being labelled a James Hunt by a mod and others). Why are these things consistently emerging in the same region of the world and what are governments there doing to prevent outbreaks in the first place?

Yes hindsight is great and when lockdown was implemented all we really knew was Wuhan, Italy and Spain where health services were overwhelmed. we have to disagree on the ego thing.

I don't think you can prevent outbreaks of this bastard. All you can do is contain. And the only way to that without a national lockdown is with regional control with test track and trace.

Number of infections is the wrong metric to get excited about. Hospital admissions and deaths are what really matter; they have not spiked

For the sake of clarity and correctness, I think the phrase you’re looking for is ‘Berkshire hunt’, as opposed to ‘James Hunt’.

I just dont believe the figures we are given.

Media hype and scaring people into believing there is a killer disease out there worse than any other year...I just dont buy it

Corona virus's have been with us for ever. There is nothing new under the sun.

If we do get locked down again in October

it must prove its all been planned out all along.

I agree. Here the media have been falling over themselves as one person has tested positive in a ph in Gorleston and 8 people have self isolated....Theyve not said how ill the chap is. Imagine if they reported the same news when people had flu?

Approx 5 times more people died of flu in the last week of July than did of this virus.

yes. Agree on the metrics and that is a good thing. So slowly open up and monitor admissions and deaths. Use targeted track and trace. This is still the failing we have. If you look at Taiwan and South Korea they had outbreaks but reacted very fast with neighbourhood lockdowns for a few days. This few days bought time for mass testing and tracking so infected could be isolated then the rest of the neighbourhood could get back to work. All we can do is shut greater Manchester.

So compare 1 virus against 2 other illnesses? How did CV-19 fare against car crash and cancer victims combined?

I’m quite sure we can find some other illness or death rates to add together to beat CV-19.

So not got involved in this debate before, but I think the gov have done a decent job of it considering! But I was reading The Sunday Times, oddly on Sunday and ( I don’t know if this is true) but one article said that a total of 37 people under 40 have died without other issues. Where my office is 23 companies have moved out, it is practically empty.
