Anybody Have Access To A S1/2 Chassis?

Paul Coleman

Question

I need to know the wall thickness of the tubes which stick out the back of the chassis. I'm referring to the top 1.5" diameter tubes which have the top of the engine mounting bracket welded to them and then run through the bracket which supports the top of the rear shock. On mine there's about 30mm of the tube poking out the back and it has a 4mm wall thickness but I'm not sure if this is original or not? Can anybody confirm please?

Thanks, Paul.

Hard to measure accurately on the stub, mine is ~3/32" wall thickness (1.5" diameter).

I was guessing it was 1.5 x 0.090 when I looking through a tubing catalog. Probably standard seamed tubing, I know the tubing used for the bracing struts have seams and the suspension lower links are seamless.

Thanks Bill that confirms that my chassis has a non-factory modification. Mine both have 4mm wall thickness tubes inserted into the 1.5" diameter tubes which had then been welded where they poke out the back. To start with I thought this might be a factory mod to stop the chassis flexing but it looks like it's just mine. I had bought some 4mm wall thickness tube to replace all the tubing at the rear of my chassis and I'm still going to use it for the top tubes but I'll use 2.5mm tubing for the lower tubes, all seamless as it's stronger. Hopefully that should 'see me out' as it will take a long while to rust through 4mm!! I don't think the extra weight will be an issue.

Paul.
