Chassis Question

Can any series 1 owners please tell me if there should be a piece of angle or 'U' channel on the chassis at the front where I've drawn the white arrow on the following picture please...

If there is a piece of angle or 'U' channel what is it for?

I'm trying to put mine back to how it left the factory and it would be nice to know.

I'm pretty sure there's a shallow U-section piece that joins those two uprights. Not sure what it's for, though.

Yep, shallow U section. Likewise im not sure what it's for but on the S2 each corner has another short piece of channel which supports the corners of the rad cowel.

Although I can't help you I want to ask if there is something missing on my car.

According to a very old (and bad) production picture of Lotus I am not seeing any difference.

Yes I think you (and me) are missing a piece of angle which bolts onto the front where the anti-roll bar mounts go. But I haven't yet figured out what it's for!! You can see this piece in the workshop manual drawing of the chassis. If I find out what it's for I'll let you know.

Here's the chassis diagram from the workshop manual and I believe the item marked 2 is the piece in question...

Having worked on installing a new Radiator on my S1 a while ago, I think its the pices on the end of the fiberglass bucket/assembly that the Radiator sits in.

Besides the bolts that go through the top of the assembly into the bonnet area of the car, there is a rear lip on the assembly that gets screwed into that rail. It holds the trailing edge of the thing the radiator sits in up against the chassis and off the ground.

On mine, there were three threaded bolts which installed upwards to hold the back of the assembly up.

If this dones not make sence, let me know and I'll look for pictures.

Hmmm... some pictures would be good I can't see how that angle can be used if it's bolted behind the anti-roll bar as surely the bar is directly above the angle and therefore in the way?

Hmmmmmmm, that is interesting.

My S3 is the early type chassis with the same anti roll bar mounts and I haven't got that bit of angled steel either.

I'll have to check my parts manual when I get home tonight, I always looked at that area of the chassis and thought it didn't appear right.

If it is supposed to be there then I may have to make one of those up.

That's interesting because it doesn't seem to have the 3 holes in the bottom of it but it's certainly there! According to the previous owner of my car the original piece didn't last very long before it rusted away, presumably because it gets all the spray from the road? So that could explain why quite a few people don't seem to have one or even know of its existence. Mine had a piece welded to the chassis when I got the car...

Now I am confused .....

This is my S3 Turbo and it does not have the bar, but it looks like it should.. Parts and service manual are no help...

Any ideas
