Lag And Boost Problem

Recommended Posts

Hey guys i own a 1988 lotus esprit turbo. It is the bosch injection model.

I am having severe turbo lag problems, it takes forever to spool the turbo. and when it's spooled, the car is not fast at all. The boost gauge only reads up to the half way line aswell.

It also has some random sputtering bogging at cetain throttle posititons, and at full throttle aswell.

Any input on these problems? it would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Peter

I am guessing the problem is fuel related?

what should i check?

If the lag is very long, I'd suspect possibly a stuck open wastegate. I had my wastegate pop open when I first had the car and after checking everything, I pulled the downpipe and the wastegate had pushed open too far and gotten stuck in the open position. Only got about .5bar of boost. At least pull the wastegate actuator rod off and rotate the flapper arm through the range of movement and see if it's sticking.

sounds like air fuel issue. Check the wastegate first, then check all your plumbing between the air flow meter and the intake. Also check the crank case ventilation hose and ALL the hosing from the air flow meter. That's step one... the rest of the steps are fairly in depth, so start with all that.

Modifying esprit's.. now that's fun..

okay then... What it sounds like to me is that your fuel distributor is sticking. Though, there still is a wastegate possibility. Do you have an LM-1? or some sort of wideband o2 monitoring system? Have you checked your plugs? It would be good to try and narrow the focus of our search first before jumping around.

HEY!!!! Don't leave me in the dark.... :) I have the EXACT same problem with my 88 Bosch injected POS. Please post what your findings were. PLEASE!!!

2.2 turbo... What was causing the sputtering problems? Vac lines? Wastegate? a banana in the tailpipe?

i won't.... but an analysis over the phone can be done easier than on here... and then i can post our findings on the site..

the bogging is generally due to the fuel distributor piston being stuck.. You end up getting less fuel than necessary and the car leans out, creating a loud intake noise without any power... similar to the difference between a car with a cold air intake and without... without is the normal sound and with is the boggy sound. there is more intake noise than exhaust in a lean situation.. but it generally doesn't cause massive miss-firing

true it would take forever for me to type all the instructions of what to look for......

Can the fuel distributer be stuck as to allow to much fuel? mine seems to be running rich?

yes it can... my old porsche was stuck in one position only and would be extremely rich at idle and then lean out as you applied more throttle/rpm. In fact, I couldn't even go past 2/3 throttle or it would stall out. The biggest issue to find right off the hop is to find out what your fuel pressure is.

Here is a link to a breakdown of how the system actually works:

http://www.xs4all.nl/~master99/slc/gif/k_e..._e_jetronic.htm

check that out and we'll go from there.

I will be out at my shop where my books are on ke jetronic trouble shooting tonight after 6:00pm mountain time. If either one of you wish to call me, you can and I can immidiately call you back if you like -- my long distance is free.

That schematic scared me! I think I'm in trouble.....

It does help to diagnose problems when you can understand what its supposed to do.... ha ha!!

I was told the fuel pressure was fine, but I want to check for myself....

I have free long distance also! anyway i can't call tonight perhaps another night?
