My 88 turbo is near completion.... was on dyno today but altinator died so need a new one as my voltage was all over the place.... car ws showing 240bhp at the wheels at only 3000 revs, Guy says I can name my figure and he should be able to get it, He was well surprised as he thought initially 300bhp at the fly wheel might be tricky to get out of it. I said I wanted no more than 300bhp at the wheels, thats about 354-360bhp engine power as I'm worried about the gearbox and head gasket at any more than that...... What do you guys think??? Oh that was at 1 bar of boost and 3000 revs as he was just building it up when he noticed the voltage fluctuating and stopped.... Was planning 1.2 bar of boost and limiting revs to 7200rpm.

ok... Ported and flowed cylinderhead with bigger valves. 104 inlet cam. ballanced everything inc pistons cams crank con-rods and everything that rotates.... Chargecooler as my car is an 88 turbo, T35 turbo, 650cc siemens injectors, alluminium carbide coated piston tops to stop heat transfer, DTA S60 pro ECU + Boost controller and wideband, K&N, ram air, Larini Exhaust.. that's all that springs to mind......

That's the engine mods that spring to mind but it's been on going for so long I may have missed some things but I think the main details are coverd there

Yeah your right Mike, a bar will get me what I want and maybe more so just going to get it tunned to about 370bhp at the flywheel as i read somewhere "Ithink on dermot's site" that 380bhp was the limit before you start to get head gasket problems and other failure issues ...

Better safe than sorry eh! That to me is far more than enough power for my wee car :welcome:

This sounds very good :welcome:

I think that this gearbox can take more abuse than the headgasked. At least my experience.

It looks like most of the gearbox failures is on the weak 5th gear.

I have used mine on the track and dragraced it a lot and its headgasked that drives me nuts.

Pressure building up in the coolant system so I have to run for a short time or lower the boost.

With 300rwhp its gona be very fast with incredible wide powerrange.

Hi Robin,

not spoke in ages, how is your car coming along??? What kind of power are you running and what problems has high output given you???? I have an alloy header tank and have modded the filler neck well had another welded on with a pressure relief cap as it came with a screw on cap from Esprit Engineering.... I hope that will help save my head gasket by chucking the pressure out there before any mjor damage or failure occurs.... Time will tell.. I'll be gentle with her too though!!!

Rog a T35 is a hybrid turbo, T3 is standard mate.... T3 runs out of puff too early so I got me a bigger one haha....

So excited but i think i'l need to wait another week or so before i get to drive her, can't wait!!!! I'll keep you all posted..Been 7 years to get to this point.... I want to drive it!!!!!!!!

Your project sound s great as well !

I just had the headgasket and the bolts replaced, still working on a major fault in the engine build, probably the liners were inserted faulty when the engine got assembled at the Lotus plant... still trying to find this out...

Anyway, assuming all was done according to the books, I would advise to get a set of ARP bolts from Garry, if you are planning + 400 HP at the flywheel....

I just went through all the experiments.... Take Dermots advice and save some money and time, do it right from the beginning on...

don't want that much power mate, got most of my bits from Garry bud.... just over 300rwhp will keep me delighted, not greedy with the power hhahaha..

Hope you get to the bottom of your problem mate

good luck

Realy good that you are so close to drive it.And I gess you will be impressed how well this Esprits still are going.

My car is incredible fast on the track.I have tuned everything now so its very good balance on the hole car.

I`m amaced how easy my car is now to drive fast on the track, was testing my friends Elise last time on the track and Its not as good as my Esprit when talking about handling and running it on the edge.

I gess all the work I have put in my car have paid off and still have some more plans with it.

My main problem lately have been the headgasked.

Take a look on my site at LEW to see some of my mods.

My last headgasked blew at 1,7 bar.............cant blame Lotus for that..........

Have been using 1.45 bar and tested it a lot with G-Tech and get 350BHP at the rearwheels in avarage.

But get pressure in the cooling system and temp beginn to increase after 10min of track work.

I use 1.45bar and are on my 4th headgasked in 2 year (5000km) But it have not blown at 1,45 it have always blew

when I have turnet the boost up higer or with detonation(bad fuel pressure reguator)

I run with 1,6 bar at drag race and it seems to last....and to use below 1,3bar to be 100% safe.

I gess it all depends on the duty cycle,if you are going to test topspeed everyday you might have to use only 1,0bar of boost to get it to last.

I`m pretty much impessed my self, this engine seams to take more abuse than I thought.

Its the short duty cycle that do this possible,if you run 4hr racing i belive you have to do a lot of mods to be able to get it last with 300rwhp (360bhp).

And with the mods you have done you will be fine up to 320rwbhp if the engine is mapped right.

I gess you will get 320rwhp at 1,2 bar.

But stay away from a lot of full pwr 5th gear use.Thats gona be the next week link.

Did you O-ring the liners when you had it apart?

I belive this is the solution to get the headgasked to last with higer boost.

Your car is realy looking good now.And with the performance matching the look.

Its gona be a dam expensive stock supercar to keep up with you both ways.

Are you gona do more dyno runs?

Good info to share Robin! I was going to dyno again this sunday but the weather is supposed to be high 90's(Farhenheit) so I'll wait till it cools down a bit for better results. The car is holding 1.28bar to redline very well!!!! Can't wait to see what it's making now at the wheels over 1.05bar!! I plan on having the head o-ringed when I replace the headgasket(hopefully not too soon though!)

  • 3 weeks later...

Here we have the lasest........ my car is now producing 265 RWHP at 4,000 revs, and o.9 bar of boost, a misfire developed so back to the ramp to check timing disc as they think it may have shifted...... boost is coming in earlier so they think the turbo was just needing some use after sitting for 6 years... boost is coming in at just over 2,000 revs now and more gradual up to the 0.9 bar mark.... They're not goinng to increase the boost as they're happy with the results so far and think i'll still be looking at getting more than i initially thought I would get at the 1.2 bar I initially asked for, The turbo is good for high end boost so should give lots more and not taper off too much before the 7,000 rev limit, May even take it back a bit more by reducing the boost... only want just over 300 rwhp, SAFETY FIRST..... hopefully get her back for next weekend and run her in gently before the Hethel bash in september....YIPPEEEE....
