He is doing a lovely Tartan S1 Retrim in black and red hunting Menzies which is going to look ace when done. Dave Looks lovely - you never see these redone properly like this. Is it SJ’s upholsterer?

LOTUSMAN33 1,523
Thanks guys, yes it’s SJ’s trimmer. He’s a smashing guy and knows the cars inside out which is a bonus and trimmed an Essex and several Tartan cars. Like with most good trimmers he’s stacked out with work so unlikely to see the seats until next year, my centre console was really distorted by the sun but they have straightened it out well so saved 👍🏻 I can’t wait for the S2 Elan to get the magic treatment with lovely supple leather already selected hopefully ready for next summer. Djs44 80
Dave is there a specific leather spec ? By that I mean grain ,colour etc .
LOTUSMAN33 1,523
I’ll have to ask my trimmer as he sourced mine for me after I asked for a match, he’s done a couple JPS before using a heavier grain. 👍🏻 Quote Do or do not, there is no try!
LOTUSMAN33 1,523
Got my rear calipers fitted this afternoon and the gear linkages and cable. I do like the heat shield for the engine mount, not had this on my previous early Esprit’s I’m just about done underneath now and my reconditioned distributor has arrived so I will convert to electronic then can build up around it. Looking forward to getting the new carpets from Steve, I collected my centre console and A pillar trims on Friday so saving the interior for when I’m off over xmas. LOTUSMAN33 1,523
Thanks Fabian, exhaust next which is lovely as came from PNM. 😎 1 Quote Do or do not, there is no try!
LOTUSMAN33 1,523
Quick update; Been busy getting the engine bay built up, had a nightmare with the exhaust from PNM as the quality was not good unfortunately with the front section which joins the manifold, welds were terrible and the flange was like a banana so taken lots of rework. I’m now going to have to cut and modify the intermediate pipe as the whole system is under far to much tension. 🤬 Still nothing i can’t fix and I’ve expressed my opinions to Pete at PNM as it was £550! I’ve suffered lots of poor parts so far from various suppliers so my advice to anyone is salvage as much OEM equipment as you can. Does anyone have a genuine S2 rear spoiler/valance they want to sell as the reproduction one from SJ is not great and the wrong shape 😢 I can’t final set the exhaust until my bumper arrives allowing me to set the exhaust up through the spoiler correctly, SJ seem to have a log back log with fibreglass parts. Engine bay is getting there with just some wiring to tidy up, a few odd jobs and touch ups and fit the air box. Does anyone have a standard air box back section they want to sell? Thought I had one but actually have several fronts of different designs. Next up is make some new wood sections and fit the new carpets from @SteveV8 I also need to fit the new braided clutch hose, I can’t fill with water until I do the front overhaul and fit the new hoses so doubt it will be running before spring. Looking forward to starting the interior and fitting the new carpets and my newly trimmed leather parts 😁 Dave 2 1 Quote Do or do not, there is no try!

LOTUSMAN33 1,523
They are aeroquip hoses from SJ, must admit I would have preferred silver or black fittings but they are excellent quality and it’s never going to be a show and shine car as not what I’m looking for. 😉 1 Quote Do or do not, there is no try! Lotusfab 3,314
What did S and J charge for the distributor rebuild? The timing curve is way off on mine so I need to address the issue.

LOTUSMAN33 1,523
Been a quiet couple weeks on the car front but today I received a nice little boost to keep me busy 😁 Excellent quality rear bumper which will allow me to final set the exhaust and rear valance completing the domestic transformation. My new air box inner section, a bit of prep needed and to fit the hook clips and breathers followed by rubber should see this looking great. Engine bay vents as the originals are brittle and cracked, these will need some prep work but should fit fine. I ordered the Cant rail before the car arrived like the bumper but think this will just be a spare as pretty sure I can save the original ok. I had to cut and shorten my intermediate pipe today after getting limited response from PNM over the quality issues, the exhaust was under too much strain as not right so a 1/2” section was cut. I think I need to give them some welding lessons 😂 ( Yes mine is on the left!) I need to crack on as I have another project to start 😉 Dave 2 1 Quote Do or do not, there is no try! Gold FFM tomcattom 285 Posted December 9, 2020 Gold FFM Report Share Posted December 9, 2020 Is that wood inside the bumper? That welding... Errrm... 🤨 1 Quote Norfolk Mustard S4s #
LOTUSMAN33 1,523
Yes Tom they did have wood from the factory, it is a Lotus after all 😂 The silencer was good but the other parts supplied are shocking so certainly couldn’t recommend especially after lightening my pocket by over £500!! I will get the car running then remove and grind them down and repair the welds myself ( Job for the spring as don’t want to grind in my garage) As I said I don’t think welding is their strong point 😂, it will look lovely when I do it properly the cowboys 🤠🤠 I spent two hours filing the flange flat and dressing the plate to allow fixings to actually fit, even then I didn’t get it to come right in on the edges. Fridge 1,026
Wow, that welding is shocking. Yes @tomcattom rear bumpers were a composite of wood and fibreglass. @LOTUSMAN33 I'd be interested to know what you think of the fit of SJ's replacement fibreglass cant rails, as I suspected that they'd be too oversized and decided to clean up the originals. Original always best where possible. I was 50:50 on mine.
LOTUSMAN33 1,523
I will give it a go David but like you I suspect it won’t be great especially with the rear valance fit which was less than satisfactory. The Cant rail does seem well made though so it may be ok. Unfortunately I have bought quite a few parts which are below standard so just going into the spares box. Djs44 80
I’d send that exhaust back and get a refund . Welding is really poor . That’s not really how they sent it out ?? Surely not. Lotusbits exhaust in a different league. Regarding the wood in the bumper - I removed all of mine but it was actually inside the bumper and had to be shaken out through the slot in the enclosed bit . What function does the wood do ? Can I just leave it off mine ?
Rudi K 26
"wood bumper" - self explanatory?
Fridge 1,026
The wood is part of its construction. Like a boat. Strong and light. The cabin bulkhead is the same.
Gold FFM tomcattom 285 Posted December 10, 2020 Gold FFM Report Share Posted December 10, 2020 Learn something new every day. I knew about the bulk head, but the bumper was a new on me. Quote Norfolk Mustard S4s #
