1990 Esprit NA & the complete enthusiasts package

Recommended Posts

I have cherished this car since purchasing 21 years ago in 1999 with 22,900 miles. I am its 3rd owner and it has wanted for nothing and was used regularly but sympathetically. It has never been around a race track (other than having the honour of being the 2nd car in the ‘Esprit Parade Lap’ around Silverstone in 2016 commemorating 40 years of Esprit production). It has always been garaged and driven in a caring manner, I have been nowhere near the cars true capabilities. It is displayed very regularly at car shows and is much admired.

Whilst it is not 100% factory original, it can be taken back to factory spec. easily if required. The few changes made have been to either enhance the looks or performance and reliability of the vehicle and all are acceptable and recognised changes within the Lotus Esprit community. It is fitted with the S4 rear wing (with additional lift strut), Turbo SE front bumper, spots and air dam, the highly respected Ramsbottom & Brandt German engineered shock absorber, spring and bush upgrade which is easy to adjust for ride height & rebound. Goodrich braided brake hoses with upgraded brakes. Clear front indicator conversion, white side repeaters. Black & gold Lotus badges to nose and wheels

As I am not using the car enough to warrant being its custodian, I have completed significant work in readiness to pass it on to another true Lotus Esprit enthusiast.

It will only be sold to a true Lotus enthusiast, no tyre kickers, dreamers, time wasters, test pilots or canvassers. If you cannot prove insurance you will not drive it, but I am more than happy to take genuine enquirers for a drive.

Stunning colour combination of white and black exterior consisting of ‘Monaco White’ body, black gloss roof and wheels with immaculate interior of ‘Dark Raven’ leather seats, dash & door panels, unworn grey carpet and grey alcantara trim. As confirmed by the Lotus archivist and Heritage certificate, this Esprit was 8th of 22 Normally Aspirated (NA) Esprit built in 1990 making it the 14th from last 2.2 non turbo Esprit built and 3rd from last in white, no. 274 of 288 built in total between 1988 – 90.

The normally aspirated (NA) Esprit is fitted with the aluminium ‘912’ 2174cc 16 valve DOHC engine mated with twin Dellorto DHLA45D side draught carburettors coupled to a 5 speed gearbox. It is a basic but strong engine with no electronic gadgetry or injection and propels the light Esprit more than adequately. Whilst it is not the fastest version of the Esprit, it has more than sufficient performance, is very reliable and unstressed; and still has the stunning looks and that renowned Lotus handling. The Esprit is a surprisingly useable car with both front & rear storage areas and a very comfortable driving position.

Lotus quoted performance figures for the less stressed non turbo Esprit as 172bhp, 0-60 mph in 6.5 seconds and going on to reach over 140mph which is more than capable for today’s roads, whilst returning up to nearly 40mpg (I regularly achieve 30-35mpg) My Esprit is fitted with the better breathing stainless steel full ‘Semi-Sports’ exhaust system and manifold and the K&N air filter, has achieved a documented 178.1bhp when rolling road tuned, the engine had approx. 41000 miles, now reading 49885 Miles. Always serviced at Lotus or performance car specialist garages.

July 2020 recent works by ‘BTEC Racing’ include, but not limited to:

Cambelt & the major ‘C’ service inc Mobil 1 synthetic engine & gearbox oil, performance plugs, performance leads, performance coil, K&N filter cleaned & re-oiled.

Rebuilt carbs using genuine Dellorto parts

New directional Toyo tyres March 2020, have only travelled to specialist garage & back

MOT 4/11/19 49871 miles. No advisories.

Known faults:
Electric aerial not working
Very small crack to rear bumper (Replacement inc in sale)

2 sets of Esprit wheels & tyres consisting of:

Esprit Turbo wheels Silver 7J x 15 front & 8.5J x 16 rear in factory silver. Fitted with low profile directional Toyo Proxes T1R Front 215 45 15 with 3/4 of tread depth remaining. Rear 245 45 16 with 1/4 of tread depth remaining. In my opinion this combination of tyre doesn’t look right or suit this model of Esprit and gives too harder ride.

Winter wheels Black with polished rims 7J & 8J x 15 fitted with Falken directional tyres 195 60 15 front with 3/4 of tread depth remaining, rears fitted with 225 60 15 with 2/3 of tread depth remaining.

New (unstamped) Owner’s manual which I keep in the car for reference whilst the stamped service copy is kept with my service records, files and receipts for the past 21 years and some before. I also have all the Tax discs ’95-’14, MOT certs since ’94, emissions reports, HPI reports 21 years of Club Lotus magazines in Club Lotus binders and a huge number of magazine articles on the Esprit.

Boxed 75cl bottle of Henri Giraud ‘Esprit’ champagne purchased in Reims, France 2016. We toured Europe in the Esprit. Leading wine critic Robert Parker described “Henri Giraud, established in 1625 as the finest Champagne house virtually no one has ever heard of”. The finest champagne I’ve ever had!

Other information:

Originally the normally aspirated Esprit’s were fitted with the slightly smaller specification Route OZ wheels (see my winter set for details) whereas the later turbos was fitted with slightly wider 7J & 8.5J and deeper rimmed specification Route OZ wheels with Goodyear Eagle tyres, fronts being 215 50 ZR 15 and rears 245 50 ZR 16. These Goodyear Eagle tyres were tested and developed with Lotus to compliment the suspension settings; providing performance, grip, handling and comfort due to the wide girth and deep side wall, whereas modern performance cars rely on the suspension for comfort when fitted with low profile tyres. My vehicle was specified with the wider turbo size wheels & tyres from new. As these Goodyear tyres are now obsolete the only modern equivalent manufacturer that provides similar & matching front and rear tyre sizes (I don’t like to mismatch manufacturers) and worthy of been fitted to a performance vehicle are Toyo. So my Esprit is fitted with brand new directional Toyo Proxes T1R’s . 225 50 15 & 245 55 16 very slight oversize from original specification. As mentioned these are as close as you can get with single tyre manufacturer sizes.
