Clunky sometimes violent gear change in Evora S w IPS

Recommended Posts

So I've struggled with this issue in my 2015 Evora S for the past 3 years.

The IPS gearbox works great at high speed and high RPM, but when it comes to automatically downshifting when coming to a standstill, 3-2 and 2-1 gear changes make a loud audible clunk that can be felt through the seats.

On a related note, once or twice a day, the IPS misreads my intentions and violently down shifts and the whole car shakes (it only happens with the 3to2 gear change) when all I wanted was to continue coasting on 3rd gear.

Dealer claims this is normal and can do nothing about it. Note: when the TCU was reset and transmission oil changed, the gear changes became a lot smoother for a few days and then the same issues resurfaced.

Any ideas? I'm at my wits end and will probably have to sell the car if this can't be sorted.

Thanks!

Have a look at this article on the part about U660E gearbox.   https://gearsmagazine.com/resources/issues/6f8d1_2013-1_all%20nbg.pdf

If you've ever watched the excellent YouTube channel "539 Restorations" series on restoring an ex-Dubai 750i (https://www.youtube.com/c/M539Restorations/videos) then I would be a little concerned that

I would try another dealer or a specialist, I had no issues with my IPS at all.  It's not the smoothest of gearboxes at low speed and changing down to 1st at low speed / stopping (i.e. at junctions) w

We are into our second Evora with IPS gearbox and never had your (clunky/violent) issue, which dealer did you take your Evora to?

What mileage has the car covered, how long have you owned??

I would try another dealer or a specialist, I had no issues with my IPS at all.  It's not the smoothest of gearboxes at low speed and changing down to 1st at low speed / stopping (i.e. at junctions) was a little jerky at times but never any noises.

I did get the oil changed and that made a noticeable improvement, though I see you've done that already.  My car was on ~62000 miles at that point

A very odd time when starting from cold when I first engage drive it can 'clunk' a bit, but it is only the odd time. Also because I drove everywhere in sport manual for the first year, the tcu learnt this so now in auto it isn't 100% smooth as I presume its edging towards a sport change rather than a slushy auto change. As you have changed the fluid and reset the tcu im at a bit of a loss. It may be worth searching the issue relating to toyota cars as if its a known gearbox issue then it will also show up there. Im sure I read that the gearbox in toyotas when it has issues, it was known to always one of two solenoids.

I'll call the factory on Monday and ask if this is an issue but I've had 3 IPS's cars and they weren't bad, albeit they were minty fresh press cars.

Reading that article, seems the gearbox is very sensitive to the oil used, does your invoice show that the dealer used the correct type?

Car is in the UAE. Mileage is only 34k km, I've owned for the past 3 years since it was 12k km.

I think the odd time mine did it, from starting, was when it was cold. I always let the car warm up for a minute or two before driving. So presumebly in my mind the gearbox oil is cold/thick. Do cars in UAE usually run thicker oil to counter the general higher temperatures? If its not a software issue then it can only be harware. There is a clutch control valve, which presumabley is what controls the 'take up', so there may be an issue with that, the oil or maybe the transmission oil needs flushing out if there are some contaminates in there? Im no expert btw, this is just me thinking out loud!

My 2013 S IPS has a satisfyingly sporty clunk when you press the D button from parked but is really smooth at all other times.  The only time it's clunked in use was on the test drive when I tried dropping two gears in one (down-down) in manual mode which caused a jolt.  With hindsight I could well have made it go 3rd to 1st so perhaps unsurprising.  It's never jolted when in auto either Drive or Sports mode.  In auto drive it's quite sensitive to throttle position though and will sometimes shift down if you accelerate even slightly but nothing I'd describe as violent.  What you are describing doesn't sound right at all.

I agree the transition oil SAE rating is worth investigating for sure, as you are in the UAE, the dealers may be using the hot climate spec and the Box may not need it,  An option to consider is an upgrade to the box https://www.boefab.com/products/evora-ips-shift-performance-kit

I would certainly try a gearbox-oil change, cannot hurt.
