Tyres again (sorry) - go with the obvious choice or...........

Recommended Posts

Firstly, sorry, yet more tyre discussion. I need to change all 4 of mine. The rears are worn and the fronts are old and have hardened badly. It's an 11 plate S with the standard 18/19 combo. My usage is fast road stuff during the better weather.

Obvious choice is a set of Michelin PS4. An alternative is PS4S at the back and PS4 at the front due to the size lacking for PS4S up front.

However, I'm just investigating some alternatives. In another few forums I frequent (BMW, Merc AMG and Leon Cupra) the GoodYear Asymmetric 5s get a lot of good press and actual reviews of them are good too. In some circumstances there are claims they're as good as PS4s (it's generally a discussion of either / or on the other forums). Obviously the cars in question are different to an Evora. Also I have spotted the Yokohama V105 which again gets decent write ups although isn't as popular on forums (that may just be as they're newer and a less obvious brand perhaps).

Pricewise the alternatives are pretty similar but both about £80 - £90 less than a set of PS4 all round (the PS4s/PS4 combo being a little dearer again).

So, I'm just wondering if anyone on here has used either of the alternatives on an Evora and if they were any good?

They also wear really well so will probably last a bit longer helping with the price difference.

Out of interest, where do folks get their tyres done? I'm nervous about going to the big tyre shops but they are quite a bit cheaper than Lotus garages and specialists for tyres.

I got my 4s's fitted by an alloy wheel specialist, the cost of the tyres was very close to the price I was quoted elsewhere, also a more personal service. . I had some wheels refurbed there previously. They do a lot of work for the upmarket garages in Exeter and have refurbed wheels for South West lotus and at least one other member on this forum.

Another place I have used is rather agricultural and would not want them done there.

I tend to get mine done by the chap who does refurbs and other powder coating and welding bits and pieces for me. He's very good and fitting and balancing.

From a quick look it looks like the front size PS4s are out of stock at the moment everywhere but they do exist. I've asked a couple of places to find out when they're expecting any.

I booked my car to have all tyres replaced with Michelin’s via black circle.

went to one of the high street tyre places did a decent job all 4 tyres still on the car ! Lol

I had to get a mix of PS4 and PS4s but I am very happy with set up. I drove car today slightly damp and cold , the car held its grip in the corners etc

Would that be SWWR?

Yes and @mayevora has also used them.

Have had 2 sets of RR alloys powder coated and they also swopped the tpms sensors on another set.

The 2 new alloys I get for the front of my gt430, I got them to fit the tpms sensors and tyres. I bought the lotus transmitters (about £40 each) but they provided standard valve stems -. The valve stems from lotus are about 30-40, the ones from them were a few pounds. I will be going back there when I get 2 new rear rims.

Used them a couple of times,

So what part of Devon do you live. Have not seen my Evora's about down here. @mayevora has one near Newton Abbot. There is a guy in Exeter who has a yellow gt410sport 2020 - not seen though.

Just SW of Exeter, really close. Met @MayEvora at Lotus meet last year. Would be great to catch your GT430! Also saw an Evora S in very similar colours to @MayEvora in Alphington a couple of years ago, plus a black one on Torquay ring-road. There's a few down here, that's for sure.

So, my 410 Sport's rear tyres (Michelin Cup 2's) look like a new set of F1 slicks!  (ooops ).  A beautiful band of smooth as a baby's bottom black rubber. No idea how that happened in just 8000 miles.

My dilema and where I need some advice please.

The front tyres are OK - 4mm of tread so plenty of life left in them.

So, what are my sensible/safe options:

1. New CUP2 rears

2. New Michelin Pilot Sport 4S on the rears and leave the Cup2's on the front

3. Four new Michelin Pilot Sport 4S all around

The CUP 2's are not great in the cold/wet so I am leaning to the PS4S.  Anyone any ideas/expert views?

Thanks in advance.

Mixing them sounds like a recipe for disaster, so 1 if you want to get the wear out of the original Cup2 fronts, 3 if you want a change.

I have been running with new PS4S on the front and older Supersports on the rear for about 4 months. No issue on warm dry days, but the 4S are massively better in cold (5DegC or less) weather so any kind of effort in those temps just leads to oversteer. New PS4S going on the back on Saturday.

This seems like the sensible option. If you've one about ATS (owned by Michelin I believe) often have some very good deals on :)

Thanks @mik and @Bibs - you've confirmed what I thought was the sensible approach.

Will look at ATS, but Kwik Fit currently have 15% off four Michelins which is a good deal.

Anyone interested in 2 front CUP 2's with 4 -4.5mm of tread on them lol!

So if ATS are "owned" by Michelin then they really need to get their shit together!  Kwik Fit was quite a bit cheaper AND ATS would not provide a quote for the MPS4S tyres!  Bonkers.

So KwikFit it is then (even more Bonkers when you consider Dundee was a manufacturing home base for Michelin Tyres too for decades!)

£100 off 4 tyres, you can use other places than ATS it looks like.
